W hen it comes to comprehensive breast care, it

is all right here at Th e Har-old Leever Regional Cancer Center. Our collaborative care model is built around a team of oncology experts that includes dedicated breast surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, oncology nurses with specialized training and interest in breast health issues, social workers, and nutritional and pastoral support.

Our team works together to ensure that every patient benefi ts from the most current information available in every area of breast cancer care. Our

bimonthly, multidisciplinary breast cancer conferences are one of the ways we make that happen. During each session, our expert team reviews breast cancer cases; in 2009 alone, al-most every breast cancer case treated in Greater Waterbury was reviewed by our panel. Each member of the profes-sional medical team brings his or her own frame of reference and unique set of knowledge, training and skills into consul-tation to develop comprehen-sive, integrated care and treat-ment plans for each individual patient.

Recently, the Breast Center of Greater Waterbury at the

Leever Cancer Cen-ter was awarded full, three-year accredi-tation by exceeding National Accredi-tation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) require-ments in all 27 pro-gram standards and 17 program components of care. Collectively, those measures defi ne compre-hensive, effi cient, and ad-vanced breast care at its best. Each of the services off ered through the Breast Center is also individually reviewed and accredited.

Our team approach to breast

cancer care is refl ected not just in medical care, but in our broad range of support per-sonnel and services. Th rough our on-site American Can-cer Society Patient Resource Center, breast cancer patients have access to a comprehen-sive library, free wigs and head coverings, transpor-tation services, and na-tionally affi liated support groups including Brave at Heart, Woman to Woman and the Look Good, Feel Better programs, and Reach to Recovery, a one-to-one peer support program touching women at every stage of their journey, from potential diag-nosis to diagnosis, treatment,

and ongoing care. Breast can-cer patients and their families also benefi t from our art ther-apy, energy therapy, and journ-aling programs.

“We recognize breast can-cer treatment is dynamic, with changes coming at an increas-ingly rapid pace,” explained Dr. Jeff rey A. Bitterman, Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at Th e Harold Leever Regional Cancer Cen-ter. “We also recognize that it is multifaceted. It is our goal not only to keep pace with changes, but to keep our team at the forefront, leading the way through research, tech-nology, and education initia-tives.”

Accredited by the Associa-tion of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Connecticut’s Beard-sley Zoo is a premier fam-ily destination and one of the state’s top tourist attractions, welcoming over 280,000 visi-tors annually. The zoo is situ-ated on 52 acres in historic Beardsley Park in Bridgeport.

Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo began to take shape in 1878 when James Beardsley donated more than 100 acres to the City of Bridgeport on the condition that it “accept and keep the same forever as a public park...” In 1884, the City contracted noted land-scape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who was famous for New York’s Central Park, to design Beardsley Park.

Parks Commissioner Wes-ley Hayes started a cam-paign in 1920 for a city zoo in Beardsley Park. He asked

Bridgeport citizens to donate animals, and 18 exotic birds made their home in the park in the first year. The Barnum & Bailey Circus donated some “retirees,” and Beardsley Park Zoo was established in 1922.

Today, the Connecticut Zoological Society, with assis-tance from the City of Bridge-port and State of Connecticut, runs the zoo year-round as a private, non-profit institution with more than 300 animals representing North and South America, an indoor Tropi-cal Rainforest, New England Farmyard, walk-through avi-ary with a new Bald Eagle exhibit, Wolf Observation Learning Facility (WOLF), carousel, and Victorian green-house.

As part of its mission, Beard-

sley is involved in ground-breaking animal conservation efforts, and is home to the first Brazilian ocelot to have mul-tiple pregnancies and kittens by artificial insemination, and is the first

accredited zoo in the north-east to exhibit a Chacoan peccary piglet, an endangered species.

their lives by years? Harvard School of Public Health re-searchers recently found that seniors with an active social life may also have a slower rate

of memory decline.Benchmark Senior Living

Residents are sharing photos and stories online, calling family with Skype,™ playing brain fi tness games, and sending messages to friends. Th e program even has special accommodations for residents with arthritis and those with memory loss who are residents of the communi-ties’ Harbor Program neigh-borhoods.

“We were thrilled to intro-duce Benchmark Connections at over 40 Benchmark com-munities,” adds Bellemare. “It’s about much more than learning to use a computer. It’s about connecting, socializing, and learning, rather than pas-

A Well-Designed Landscape Can Improve Value Of Your Property And Quality Of Your Life

W hether you need an on-site land-scape design

consultation, a small or large landscape design or redesign, or the creation of detailed, comprehensive landscape de-sign plan, experienced and enthusiastic Landscape De-signer Amy Sampson is here to serve you.

Amy Sampson, Cheshire resident and owner of AES Landscape Design and Con-

sultation, has taught landscape design courses at Naugatuck Valley Community College and is the landscape design instructor for the Connecticut Nursery & Landscape Associ-ation’s accreditation program. Amy has also taught classes for the Connecticut Master Gardener continuing educa-tion program and conducts talks for nurseries and garden clubs across Connecticut.

Amy begins the landscape

design process by helping de-fine your specific landscape goals, your site’s unique at-tributes, and your budgetary and maintenance consider-ations. With her extensive knowledge of plants, design and color, and her well-honed understanding of environ-mental conditions and site challenges, Amy will create an individualized plan to meet your needs.

The latest in computer-generated landscape design software allows you to view your proposed designs in two and three dimensions and as a photo-image, before installa-tion. This technology provides the ability to make changes, view options, and incorporate your feedback without the high costs associated with tra-ditional hand renderings.

Amy hand-selects the plants she uses in her designs from a

number of reputable sources to better assure that all plant materials installed are healthy, aesthetically pleasing, and well-suited for the environ-ment in which they will grow.

So, no matter how small or large your landscape design and installation needs are, AES Design is here to meet

them.Please contact Amy E.

Tips For Healthy AgingA Q&A with Pamela Smith, Gerontologist and Coordinator

of Resident Services at e Orchards at Southington

?What do you think ac-counts for the fact that many of us are unpre-

pared for the challenges of aging? I believe there are three reasons. Th e fi rst reason is that often individuals view aging issues as a “normal” part of growing older. Many of us do not realize that there are resources and services that can help to enhance the quality of how we age by preventing, or at least slowing down, some negative aspects of aging. Fall-ing and fall prevention are ex-amples of aging issues where interventions can make a pos-itive diff erence.

Secondly, if people do ac-cept that they have a need re-lated to aging, they often do not know where to learn about or access the information or services to help them.  Finally, studies have shown that even if someone knows there are potential solutions to their ag-ing issues and know where to seek help, they may still be re-luctant to look for and accept that assistance.

We all know individu-als in our communities who are models of healthy ag-ing. What can we learn from them? Th ere are certainly people who just seem to thrive and fl ourish as they age, and researchers are busy trying to

unlock the keys to successful aging. Th e Harvard Study of Adult Development, for exam-ple, is the longest, most com-prehensive examination of ag-ing ever conducted. Beginning in the 1930s, researchers have studied more than 800 indi-viduals in an attempt to dis-cover the behaviors that trans-late into happy and healthy aging.

Some of the factors, like avoiding nicotine and main-taining a healthy weight and exercising, are no surprise. However, the study also found that good adjustment or cop-ing skills and maintaining healthy relationships are more predictive of healthy aging than your cholesterol level or your income.

So, attitude is a contrib-uting factor in successful aging? Based on my experi-ence, being open to new op-portunities and actively seek-ing out opportunities to grow, learn and share contribute to healthy aging.  Th at can trans-late to learning a language or participating in a new activity. It can also involve being open to taking advantage of the many services in the commu-nity that assist seniors. Con-necticut Center for Healthy Aging is a wonderful resource for seniors and their families.

Scores of people spend their working days dreaming of the mo-

ment they are eligible for re-tirement, counting down the minutes and seconds, par-ticularly if they’ve been in a job that hasn’t been the most enjoyable. But many fi nd that, once retired, they don’t know what to do to fi ll their time. Boredom may be a side eff ect of retirement, and some retir-ees want to go back to work.

When planning for retire-ment, all other factors take a backseat to fi nances. Conse-quently, there may be emo-tional issues that arise with which retirees may not be pre-pared to deal. Having a post-retirement plan in place can mean the diff erence between happiness and having a hard time adjusting, according to experts.

Here are some tips that can help anyone ease into the golden years.

•Establish goals. Goals can give life direction and have

you looking forward to things. Goals also motivate retirees to get up in the morning now that a commute to work isn’t part of the daily schedule.

•Donate time or money. Giving back to others, wheth-er to the community or to a charitable organization, can feel good and give retirees some structure. Volunteering your time at a place can give life some sort of purpose out-side of a job.

•Start a home-based busi-ness. Now may be the oppor-tunity to start a business ven-ture you have always dreamed about, whether that is some-thing hands-on or just serving as a consultant.

•Try something new. Part of goal-setting is to add things to the list you’ve never done before, which can boost feel-ings of excitement. You may discover a new interest that becomes a passion. Now that you have time to explore new hobbies, they might prove more rewarding.

•Meet with people. Part of what makes work fulfi lling is the opportunity to get out of the house and interact with others who are not members of your family. It’s easy to fall into a rut when you are not

being mentally stimulated by conversation with diff erent people.

•Realize it’s alright not to love retirement. Just because the grass seemed greener in someone else’s yard, doesn’t

mean it always turns out to be that way. It is OK to accept that maybe retirement isn’t entirely what you expected and to make changes that can enable the experience to be better.
