Senior Borealis
WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE ANCHORAGE SENIOR CENTER IN MAY 2020
COVID19
When we put the Borealis to the press,
Anchorage was sll at “hunker down”.
While many of our programs connued by
Zoom, or phone, our building itself remains
closed. The Governor and the Mayor are in the
process of slowly and safely reopening our
state and city. When they say we can reopen,
we will, slowly and safely. Presently we are
securing the necessary safety equipment and
supplies, and learning what changes we need to do to keep you,
our staff and the public safe. We are planning how to reopen on a
restricted basis with the new safe distancing requirements and
other protocols and changes to comply with this phase of the
pandemic.
You have done well. You faced this pandemic with calm, collecve,
cooperave responses. This worked to keep many of us from
becoming infected, choosing boring but breathing as the be(er
alternave. This CONVID19 too will pass, we will again sing, dance ,
and swap lies with each other. We can and will overcome this. We
miss having the Center open. We miss you. Look to emails and our
phone lines for updates and when we will reopen.
As Gordon Glaser, Board President says, “be safe, wash your hands
and be like batman/batwoman and wear a mask. “
Warmest regards,
Rebecca Parker, Execuve Director
Please note that scheduled events at the Anchorage Senior Acvity Center (ASAC) are subject to change
without noce. We strive to inform you of these changes as far in advance as possible. Many services and
programs offered are held by other organizaons and beyond our control.

Try to do strength exercises for all of your major muscle groups on 2 or more days per week for 30minute sessions each,
but don’t exercise the same muscle group on any 2 days in a row.
Try to do cardio/ endurance exercise 3 or more days per week for 30minutes sessions each.
Try to do stretches or work on flexibility daily as well as balance exercises like toe taps, ankle circles, standing on one leg,
etc.
For more exercises go to the Go4Life website that include videos or literature to stay acve at home! Some examples

Medicare’s Response to COVID 19
In the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic, Medicare has
responded with several provisions to help Medicare
beneficiaries.
The website Coronavirus.gov provides up to day
informa)on about preven)on, symptoms, and answers to
frequently asked ques)ons.
Prevenon is the important firststep to stem the
spread of this highly contagious and dangerous virus.
The More You Know:
Know How COVID19 Spreads
There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID19).
The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.
The virus is thought to spread mainly from persontoperson.
• Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
• Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks.
• These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.
• Some recent studies have suggested that COVID19 may be spread by people who are not showing symptoms.
More details: How COVID19 Spreads
Clean your hands o3en
• Wash your hands o4en with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially a4er you have been in a public place,
or a4er blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. Make sure to cover all skin from your wrists to your finger (ps
and everywhere inbetween!
• If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sani4zer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces
of your hands and rub them together un(l they feel dry.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Con(nue to keep about 6 feet between yourself and others.
• Stay home as much as possible.
• Put distance between yourself and other people.
Remember that some people without symptoms may be able to spread the virus. Keeping distance from others is
especially important for people who are at higher risk of ge6ng very sick.
• Wear a cloth face mask. The cloth face cover is meant to protect other people in case you are infected.
Do NOT use a facemask meant for a healthcare worker.
The cloth face cover is not a subs(tute for social distancing.
Clean and Disinfect
• Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches,
countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.
• If surfaces are dirty, clean them. Use detergent or soap and water first. Then, use a household disinfectant. Most
common EPAregistered household disinfectants will work.

The Path Forward
Paths in our lives at mes seem like choices but differ in that our control is seldom complete. Our paths intermingle first
with our immediate families and expand from there. Our world gets larger as we grow and learn. As creatures we are
social. We long for one another and to be together which has made social separaon a challenge and discomfort firmly
against our very nature as people. As we consider a path forward, it is likely there will be converging paths from various
segments of our service industries with much to consider on how we can safely return to enjoying each other’s company.
Know we miss everyone and look forward to seeing you again soon.
In lovely counterpoint to the circumstances of late, many people in our community young and older and from broader
distance have leapt at the chance to volunteer their me making masks or providing other services to the community. One
such story involves a recent addion to our volunteer corps at ASAC, Carolyn Kostka, a 17yr old Service High School Junior.
Ms. Kostka took interest in the senior acvity center and a.er a tour thought it might be a good place to volunteer. Prior
to volunteering, she helped organize and host a super bowl party fundraiser, raising a $3,000 donaon to ASAC. With the
center closed and spring break travel on hold due to local recommendaons, Carolyn found an old Singer sewing machine
and taught herself to use it watching YouTube videos.
Ms. Kostka next researched CDC guidelines for cloth masks and determined the cost to produce one at 85 cents. She then
began taking orders via her gofundme.com/adoptamaskmakedifference with proceeds above the cost of masks going to
the Children's’ Lunchbox Program and Anchorage Senior Acvity Center. We were thrilled to nominate Ms. Kostka for
recognion of her community contribuon for the Anchorage Daily News and Northrim Bank’s recent Business Recognion
Award. One of her first orders helped Alaska Regional Hospital expand their PPE equipment for first line providers by
using the custom cloth masks made by Ms. Kostka for other staff.
Ms. Kostka connues to make masks, some with team emblems, animals and other custom designs on the scrap cloth she
uses, tallying shipments to six states and connuing to raise the goal total with a posng at the me of this wring in
excess of $4,500 and counng. I wanted to share this story as inspiraon and recognion of the spirit of community in this
young person and in the community at large. Be well!

Health and Wellness During Stressful Times
Amy Urbanus, MS, RDN, LD, CDE

Health and wellness has never been so important. Over the past few months, people of all ages have been challenged with
daily living, creang both physical and emoonal stress. Focusing on the aspects of our lives that we have control over can
be effecve in living happily and healthy!
Here are three areas that are extremely important to keep our physical and emoonal stress in check!
Good Nutrion
Fueling your body with healthy food provides nourishment and strength from the inside out. Consider these focus areas
when you are creang a healthy meal plan.
• Eat regular meals: Our bodies are designed to eat about every four hours (there are variaons from person to
person of course). This does not mean you have to eat a full meal every four hours, but maybe a healthy snack
instead of going long hours in between main meals. Eang regular meals keeps your energy up, fuels your brain
and also prevents over eang at the next meal. All will help to reduce stress and make you feel your best.
• Keep your brain nourished with anoxidants and B vitamins: Create a meal plan full of fruits and vegetables along
with whole grains, dairy products, beans and meats.
Hydraon
Ever had a headache, increased tension, and increased heart rate when feeling stressed? Dehydraon can make these
symptoms worse. Water won’t wash away the stressors of life, but being hydrated can ensure you are not adding to these
physical feelings. Dehydraon can also increase corsol levels, a stress hormone. Ease up on your body and keep it
hydrated!
• Try to drink 64 ounces of water per day and if you enjoy caffeine or alcohol, you need more!
Sleep
GeJng a good night sleep, allowing your body the chance to recover, is one of the most overlooked wellness ps.
According to the Harvard Medical School, sleep plays a crical role in immune funcon, metabolism and memory. Keep a
schedule; go to bed at the same me and wake up at the same me every day. If possible, keep your sleeping space just
for sleep. Try not to work, watching television or use electronics where you sleep.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 14, 2020
Mayor Updates and Extends Emergency Orders
(excerpts from)
ANCHORAGE Today Mayor Berkowitz issued Emergency Order EO06, which updates and extends previous
emergency orders. Emergency Order EO06 includes an updated version of the Hunker Down Order (EO03), and
extends the order to 11:59 p.m. on May 5. Emergency Order EO02, which preserved personal protecve equipment
(PPE) and prohibited certain nonurgent medical procedures, is extended unl 11:59 p.m. on April 19, at which me it
will be updated with a new order that allows for many elecve medical procedures to resume. Emergency Order EO04,
which waived bag fees, is extended unl 11:59 p.m. on June 5, and now also allows businesses to temporarily provide
customers with plasc bags.
Public health experts advise that COVID19 connues to pose a significant risk to the health and safety of Anchorage
residents. The virus sll spreads easily from person to person, and causes significant health complicaons and even
death among a relavely high number of paents. Immediately removing physical distancing restricons would likely
result in a surge of COVID19 cases that overwhelms Anchorage’s expanded health care capacity.
“Anchorage has done a great job responding to this crisis” said Mayor Berkowitz. “We hunkered down and are saving
lives. Our work is not done; the virus is sll out there. But we know that if we stay disciplined and maintain physical
distancing and good hygiene, we will be able to keep easing restricons and connue reopening the economy.”
