RATIONALE

Course Audit 1 is a subject offered to the BSED 4th year students

to provide a comprehensive review, testing and evaluation on the

different subject areas under Specialization which are important parts

in the Licensure Examination for Teachers. The subject was conceived

to meet the need for updated literature and materials which are

designed to help teacher education graduates to pass the board exam

and become full-fledged professionals .

It also provides students with the academic and hands-on

requirements needed to qualify for the Licensure Examination for

Teachers (LET). In association with this, the 4th year students of BSED

Social Studies conducted a Seminar/Workshop on Interactive Task-

Based Teaching Strategies across Disciplines. The purpose of the

seminar is to equip future teachers of Bachelor of Secondary Education

(BSED) with different Learner-centered Strategies and Techniques and

Assessment tools in teaching to respond to the current trends of global

Education and to meet the demands of the ASEAN integration.

Specifically it aims to:

a. orient the participants with the Outcomes-based Education

(OBE) strategies and assessment tools across disciplines;

b. appreciate entirely the importance of having the background

knowledge on the different innovative task-based and

outcomes-based education (OBE) strategies and assessment

tools across disciplines; and

c. employ properly the different strategies and assessment tools

in the Outcomes-based Education (OBE) activities during the

workshop.

BACKGROUND OF THE SEMINAR

It is the goal of the Commission on Higher Education that every

teacher will become not only efficient but also effective. It is in this

mission that today, a lot of trainings and seminars on new methods

and techniques in teachings, and the likes are being held so as to

prepare all the teachers in globalization and to improve and develop

the craft of each mentor in school.

Since Seminar Workshop and training are useful for teachers

the BSED Social Studies manned a seminar entitled Seminar

Workshop on Interactive Task-based teaching Strategies

across Disciplines with the theme “No Teacher is left Behind Go

for Outcomes-based Education”.

The purpose of this seminar is to enhance future teachers of

Bachelor of Secondary Education with the different student-centered

strategies and techniques and assessment tools in teaching to respond

and to meet the necessary needs to the current trends of global

education towards recognition of professional qualification,

harmonization, and standardization within ASEAN as well as to ASIA-

PACIFIC REGION.

Moreover it is for the reason that the Filipino Teachers are faced

with global, challenges in the teaching-learning situation.

It is now a wakeup call to every future teacher that there is a

need for a change as we move on to the 21st century. Teachers as

implanter of curriculum

Gone are the days that we used traditional strategies. There is

no such best strategy but there is an effective and appropriate one

in order to meet the needs of the students, to create a more effective,

meaningful and interactive environment.

Change…there will be no more as days go by. Teachers must be

an active instrument of it so that the teaching –learning

environment will improve.

During the last day of the seminar/workshop on Interactive

Task-Based Teaching Strategies and Techniques across Disciplines last

September 28, 2017. There were at least 46 students of BSEd III and

44 students of BSEd-IV who actively participated in the said

seminar/workshop. There were of 90 students, 2 faculties with the

total of 92 participants.

The day before the seminar, September 27, 2017, the Social

Studies students together with the Mathematics students were very

busy in preparing the papers like the program, different

communications the evaluation sheets and the certificates for the

seminar. That time, they had been helping each other for a good

result. They spent their time doing it together with the other students

who had helped prepare everything. They also processed the

communication letters for the seminar and let the certificates be

signed by the signatories.

During the preparation, problems aroused about the supposed

venue of the seminar but then the coordinators were able to find

another venue and that was in the building of the forestry. After

finishing and processing all the communications and ha d received

approvals of the officials, they went to the Institute of Agriculture and

Forestry for the preparation of the stage and the venue.

The seminar should be done at the Audio-Visual Room, CCJE

Building due to some circumstances it is not available that is why the

seminar was conducted at the Forestry building. At exactly 4:30 in the

afternoon, they started preparing the stage and it took much time

because there are only few of them who did it because the others also

have their own task to do. They finished the stage preparation at six

o’clock, and that time is dark already that ’s why they went home and

decided that they will just come early to finalize everything.

The last day of the Seminar/Workshop on Interactive Task-Based

Teaching Strategies and Techniques Across Disciplines was done on

September 28, 2017. The said seminar was sponsored by the Bachelor

of Secondary Education major in Social Studies and the Mathematics

students of Course Audit 1 under their professor Sheila Fesway-Malao.

The registration started at 7:30 which was manned by the third

year Mathematics majors. The registration lasted until 9 am where

participants were given their programs and evaluation sheets.

The seminar started at 9 o’clock because the fourth year BSED

students had their class at 7:30 to 9 o’clock in their subject “The

Teaching Profession”. The opening program was started by Mr. Jesrael

Castillo (Math) and Ms. Rizelle Joy Crisologo (Social Studies) who were

the masters of ceremony in the morning and a doxology led by Ms.

May Ann Quinoran. Next was the Filipinism and was conducted by Ms.

Maria Christina Laoan followed by the Recital of the Kalinga State

University Vission, Mission, and Core Values. After that recital, Mr.

John Kennedy Zalun delivered his welcome remarks followed by the

Rationale by Ms. Demie Gumabol. Our speakers in that seminar were

our very own assistant professor 4 Arsenia M. Bayongan and Dr.

James S. Guidangen. They were not able to come and deliver their

message because they also attended their seminar at the Audio-Visual

Room of the College of Education. We also witnessed an Intermission

from the BSED-IV Social Studies majors.

After the first part of the program, the seminar proper was

started by the first speaker Mr. John Kennedy Zalun (Math) and he

delivered his presentation which was entitled “Numbered Heads

Together” for almost 15 minutes followed by Mr. Melchor Dullao

(Social Studies) who’s presentation was all about “Podcast” for

almost 25 minutes followed by Ms. Jocelyn Capuyan (Math) who

presented all about the “Mix Freeze Group Strategy” for almost 15

minutes, followed by Ms. Mara Ganotisi (Math) who’s presentation is

all about the “Whole Brain teaching: Mirror Strategy” for almost

20 minutes, followed by Ms. Erniza Mangusan (Social Studies) with a

presentation about “Graffiti” for almost 17 minutes, followed by Ms.

Mary Rose Bangcoleng (Social Studies) with her presentation entitled

“Photo Oral Composition” for almost 15 minutes, followed by Ms.

May Ann Quinoran (Math) who presented about the “Placemat” for

almost 17 minutes, followed by Ms. Rachelyn Alunday (Math) who

presented about the “Mind maps” for almost 17 minutes, followed by

Ms. Mercy Bless Edubba (Math) who’s presentation is all about the

Page 12: SEMINAR/WORKSHOP ON INTERACTIVE TASK-BASED TEACHING STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES ACROSS DISCIPLINES (TERMINAL REPORT)

xiii

“Toss a Die strategy” for almost 18 minutes, followed by Mr. Jesrael

Castillo (Math) who presented about the “Send a Problem strategy”

for almost 14 minutes, followed by the Ms. Rizelle Joy Crisologo (Social

Studies) who’s presentation is all about the “Sticky Note Graphs” for

almost 14 minutes and lastly before the lunch break Ms. Sandra

Baliling (Math) in her topic in “Four Corners Strategy” for almost 15

minutes. The twelve said speakers in the morning started their

discussions around 9:30 and ended it at 12:30 in the afternoon.

In the afternoon, the registration started at exactly 12:30 to

1:30 o’clock then after a while Mr. Melchor Dullao (Social Studies) and

Ms. Mara Ganotisi (Math) started the seminar through a roll call as the

masters of ceremony. Before the speakers delivered their

presentations, we witnessed an Intermission from the BSED-IV

Mathematics majors and followed directly by the first speaker Ms.

Carites Sangmayao (Social Studies) who’s presentation was all about

“Talking Sticks” for almost 18 minutes, followed by Mr. Archemedes

Jones Fabros (Social Studies) who presented all about the “Card

Clustering” for almost 20 minutes, followed by Ms. Angelica Iyadan

(Math) who presented about the “Circle Talk” for almost 13 minutes,

followed by Ms. Maria Christina Laoan (Social Studies) who presented

about the “One Minute Challenge” for almost 20 minutes, and our

last speaker in this seminar, Ms. Judy Bayong (Math) who delivered a

presentation entitled “Thought Shapes”. The lecture was done at

around 2:30 in the afternoon.

After all the speakers delivered their presentations we

conducted an Open Forum for 30 minutes while they were having their

snacks and for the participants to ask questions or any queries.

Everyone also was given the chance to speak in front, to tell their

comments, suggestions and experiences during the previous seminars.

Page 13: SEMINAR/WORKSHOP ON INTERACTIVE TASK-BASED TEACHING STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES ACROSS DISCIPLINES (TERMINAL REPORT)

xiv

Mr. Ariel Alunday and Ms. Yesseleen Cervantes (Math Majors) were the

first two who went in front to express their feelings, experiences and

comments, followed by Filipino, Social Studies, and Biology and the

English majors. After the Open Forum, we conducted a workshop

where in all the participants were grouped according to their

specializations then they were going to choose among the strategies

presented by the speakers with the speakers facilitating the workshop

and after almost 20 minutes they presented it in front on how those

strategies can be used in teaching their subjects.

As speakers, we were glad to see that the participants

appreciated/enjoyed the workshop as they used most of our strategies

with happiness in their faces as they were performing.

After the workshop proper, Dr. Sheila Fesway-Malao the Course

Audit 1 Professor and the over-all coordinator of the seminar, awarded

the certificates to the resource speakers and to the participants

assisted by Mr. Dullao and Ms. Ganotisi, the afternoon master’s of

ceremony. The said Seminar/Workshop successfully ended 5:00 in the

afternoon with more interesting information and it really shows that

“No Teacher is Left Behind. So, Go for an Outcome-Based Education”

as stated in the Seminar/Workshop theme. After the seminar, the

students cooperated in the after care.

The Social Studies and Math majors combined as resource

speakers during their seminar on Interactive Task-Based Teaching

Strategies and Techniques Across Disciplines held at the Audio-

Visual room of College of Agriculture and Forestry building, Kalinga

State University. This was the third and last

day of the seminar. The following are the

Social Studies students and their

topics/strategies:

A. Podcast

The first strategy that was presented

by Social Studies major is podcasting

delivered by Mr. Melchor G. Dullao. The resource speaker was well

dressed in his corporate attire; he was able to deliver and had

presented a lot of examples from their own work. He knew how to

DESCRIPTIONS OF THE SPEAKERS AND THEIR TOPICS

Page 15: SEMINAR/WORKSHOP ON INTERACTIVE TASK-BASED TEACHING STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES ACROSS DISCIPLINES (TERMINAL REPORT)

xvi

connect / communicate with his audience. Mannerism was not a

hindrance for him to deliver his topic.

His topic was Podcasting which is a digital audio file made

available on the internet for downloading to a computer or mobile

device, typically available as a series, new instalment of which can be

received by subscribers automatically. He also cited that if you wish to

make and personalized your own podcast through the help of your

camera, laptop, and microphone he had

given the steps on how to make one.

The good thing in this strategy is that

even the teacher is not around the

students can still have their lesson.

B. Photo Oral Composition

Ms. Mery Rose B. Bangcoleng the

second speaker was dressed properly and was knowledgeable about

her topic and was able to deliver it short. The problem was her small

voice which cannot be heard by students at the back.

Her topic was all about Photo Oral Composition this strategy

aroused the interest of the students from the given pictures. The main

point of this strategy was to relate the lesson in a real life situation

Page 16: SEMINAR/WORKSHOP ON INTERACTIVE TASK-BASED TEACHING STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES ACROSS DISCIPLINES (TERMINAL REPORT)

xvii

through captured different photos from their surroundings but must be

connected with each other.

C. Graffiti Wall

The third speaker was Ms.

Erniza Mangusan. She was in her

corporate attire when she delivered confidently her topic with good

posture and gesture. She was able to get the attention of the

participants by questioning and making sure that they are listening.

Even if nervousness can be seen in her voice she was able to discuss

her topic. Her topic was an example of students-centered. She

discussed about how to make use the strategy Graffiti wall in teaching.

How to implement this? Provide a space like wall of the classroom or

the blackboard covered with white paper then let the students write

their ideas about the topic/subject matter. This kind of strategy are

effective to those students whose not active in oral recitation through

Graffiti wall they can write their ideas on it. She also said that the

purpose of this strategy is to help students hear each other’s ideas.

Page 17: SEMINAR/WORKSHOP ON INTERACTIVE TASK-BASED TEACHING STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES ACROSS DISCIPLINES (TERMINAL REPORT)

xviii

D. Sticky Note Graphs

Ms. Rizelle Crisologo was the speaker

of the strategy called Sticky Note Graphs.

She had a strong and well-modulated voice

that can be heard at back. She was in her

corporate attire. As presented her topic, she

moved from one place to another. She

shared confidently her knowledge about the use of sticky notes. She

was able to illustrate how to conduct this strategy by letting the

participants do the steps. The good thing/ purpose of this strategy was

that after seeing the answer of their classmate they can change their

response/ answer and have them explain their reason for wanting to

change their answer.

E. Talking Sticks

The next strategy was presented by Ms.

Carites B. Sangmayao. She looks gorgeous in

her black skirt and blazer. She presented also

actual sample of her topic the Talking Stick

which encourages all students to participate

equally in a discussion. The main objective of

Page 18: SEMINAR/WORKSHOP ON INTERACTIVE TASK-BASED TEACHING STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES ACROSS DISCIPLINES (TERMINAL REPORT)

xix

this is to practice the listening and communicating skill of the student.

People used a “talking stick” to make sure that each person had a turn

to share his or her ideas and opinions with the rest of the group. The

person holding the stick had the right to speak. Everyone else was

expected to listen with respect. When a person finished talking, he or

she passed the stick to someone else. If not another way in using this

talking stick is that put the question in every sticky then let them pick.

F. Card Cluster

Mr. Archemedes Jones Fabros was

dressed well and he had confidence in

delivering his topic. He moved also from one

place to another to get the attention of his

audience. His strategy was all about Card

cluster that involves the use of cards to gather

ideas from the students, especially when a

diversity of answers is expected. He called

some of the participants and he show how to do this inside the

classroom .This technique suited to a big class wherein you will group

your students.

Page 19: SEMINAR/WORKSHOP ON INTERACTIVE TASK-BASED TEACHING STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES ACROSS DISCIPLINES (TERMINAL REPORT)

xx

G. One Minute Challenge

The speaker was well groomed.

She had mastered her topic. Indeed,

she delivered the topic clearly and

precisely. It was a great start for

beginners. This strategy help the

students to become mentally alert, focus

on the topic, recall prior knowledge and

identify future learning needs. In

executing this strategy explain to the students that they will be given

exactly “one minute” to write down or deliver all they know about the

topics/ subject matter. This will help in reflecting and in assessing your

students if they have learned something from you.

Conclusions

The seminar/workshop entitled “Interactive Task-Based

Teaching Strategies and Techniques across Disciplines with the theme

“No Teacher is Left Behind, Go for Outcomes Based Education” was

conducted by the BSEd IV students as requirement to their subject

Course Audit 1 (CA1) handled by Professor Sheila F. Malao.

The said event was lasted for 3 days dated September 14, 21,

28 of the month of September 2017 at the Kalinga State Universty-

Audio-Visual Room, CCJE building and during the last day the venue

was moved to the forestry building because of the unavailability of the

AVR of the school. During the last day of seminar, it was comprises of

90 students (46 from BSEd-III and 44 from BSEd-IV) and 2 from the

college faculty with the total 92 participants.

The seminar was started by registration among participants and

followed directly by the first part of the program. After the first part

was the presentation of different strategies by the speakers.

Open forum was opened after the presentation by speakers for

30 min., a time for the participants to give their reactions, comments,

suggestions, and experiences for the 3 days seminar.

Open forum was followed by the workshop of the participants in

a grouping form by majors and was facilitated by the speakers after

which they were given time to present their work in front.

CONCLUSIONS AND

RECOMMENDATIONS

Page 23: SEMINAR/WORKSHOP ON INTERACTIVE TASK-BASED TEACHING STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES ACROSS DISCIPLINES (TERMINAL REPORT)

xxiv

After the presentation of the different majors, our professor Dr.

Sheila F. Malao gave her congratulatory piece and thank you message

for the speakers and the participants. She gave also her general

comments and recommendations about the seminar. The seminar

ended in giving of certificates to the participants and speakers.

The event was successfully ended with a good result even if there

have been factors that affected the continuity of the event; the

students were able to do give solutions to every problem (shifting of

venue, lack of time and materials/equipment), that arose with the help

and good guidance of our professor.

Based from the good result, the students proved their capabilities

in handling and organizing a seminar/workshop and can be improved

next time. The participant also gave their best and cooperation during

the seminar which we are hoping they could be able to use this

learning in their own field. This will be a good foundation to mold and

boost their confidence to become an effective teacher in the future.

Recommendations

The seminar/workshop was successfully done with the

cooperation of everybody from the speakers and participants. Exciting

and interactive strategies were being discussed before the participants

who also gave their full support and cooperation during the discussion.

However, recommendations are needed for the betterment of

the event especially to the speakers and the seminar. This will help to

answer the demand and aims of the seminar/workshop.

Page 24: SEMINAR/WORKSHOP ON INTERACTIVE TASK-BASED TEACHING STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES ACROSS DISCIPLINES (TERMINAL REPORT)

xxv

To the speakers- As a speaker, it could have been better first

to master your craft to deliver your topics clearly and spontaneously.

It could have been better if each speaker will cite more real life

examples regarding their topics. In terms of making power point

presentation, it could have been better if the presenters use the

correct format on making power point that is to have 7 words per line

and 7 lines per slide and it should be in a bullet type form. Avoid

mannerism and most especially technical delays so that the listeners

or audience will not be destructed. It could been better also if they

move from one place to another during their presentation.

It could have been better if all presentations including the slide

texts, videos and pictures were be big enough to be seen at the back.

It could have been better also to use simple template and avoid using

too much animations to avoid destruction of the listener’s attention.

To our classmates- everything can be achieved if we cooperate

and give our best shots. We hope that this will be our pillar in attaining

one goal and that is to learn the value of being one because as theme

say “No Teacher is Left Behind”.

To the participants – opportunities like this come once in life

time. Were you will be the start of creating something new and to

witness a difference from what is being taught to us by our mentors. It

could have been better if every BSEd III were present during the

whole session of the seminar. It could have also been better to

express your opinion openly and give your full attention to the

lectures. We hope that every information we learned from the lectures

are to be practice in our field of specialization.

Success is a product of cooperation, dedication, shared

responsibilities and effort of a group of people thus a seminar will not

be successful if it is only done by limited person without cooperation.

Therefore the organizers had decided to assign responsibilities to

each member for a better and fast result of the work whereas the

Social Studies majors had an assigned task to do before, during, and

after the seminar. Here are the people and their assignments that

made the seminar possible and successful.

Erniza Mangusan, she was assigned as the coordinator of the

Social Studies majors, she was also an organizer in the said seminar

who helped in the preparation of the venue, the signing of certificates,

the purchasing of snacks and had helped in the process of

communication letters.

Archemedes Fabros, he was one of the people in charge of the

sound system and the carrying of the chairs. He was also one of the

assistants in preparing the venue. He also took part in the

communication process and was also one who helped give snacks and

after care

Carites Sangmayao, she was one of the organizers in the venue

preparations, and responsible for the documentation and had help in

giving snacks and the after care.

Maria Christina Laoan, she had been one of the encoder during

the preparation of the communication and other paper works. She was

also one of the runners during the preparation of the venue. She also

took part in giving snacks and after care.
