Open Knowledge International is a worldwide non-profit network that aims at mainstreaming open knowledge in order to create enlightened societies, where everyone has access to key information and the ability to use it.

Known f.e. for it’s Open Definition, which provided the first definition of open data in 2005 and has become and remains the key internationally recognised “standard”.

The Panton Principles are a set of recommendations that address how best to make published data from scientific studies available for re-use. In this context, “published” means “made public” and is not restricted to formal publication in the scholarly literature.

Open Knowledge Chapters are country based autonomous and independent non-profit organisations that are officially part of the wider Open Knowledge Network.

Open Knowledge Finland is one of the 11 chapters, others being Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Greece, Ireland, Japan, and Sweden.

MyData is both an alternative vision and guiding technical principles for how we, as individuals, can have more control over the data trails we leave behind us in our everyday actions. The core idea is that we, you and I, should have an easy way to see where data about us goes, specify who can use it, and alter these decisions over time. To do this, we are developing a standardized, open, and mediated approach to personal data management by creating “MyData operators.”

Open Science Working GroupThe OKF Finland Open Science Working Group is a community for open science enthusiasts. We believe that open sharing of research data, code, protocols, teaching material, publications, and other resources, and supporting citizen science will improve transparency, quality and impact of research.

We advocate standards of openness in Finnish academia and interactions between academic institutions and wider society and seek involvement from all stakeholders to foster a core community of open science supporters in academia and beyond.

There is no formal membership. Open Science Finland Facebook group has 685 members

Group has representation in Open Science & Research Initiative (Tuuli Toivonen & Konsta Happonen), Finnish Committee for Research Data (national CODATA member, Heidi Laine)

Freedom of Information request by open science advocates revealed academic journal pricing through an administrative court decision. Finland became the first country where the subscription prices paid by practically all universities and research institutions to individual publishers were made available.

OPEN CITIZEN SCIENCE

Citizen science has most notably been used as a method for creating

observational data for life science research. Against the backdrop of current

technological advancement, we need to create Citizen Science v 2.0 – open,

diverse, responsible, dialogous and academically excellent.

OUTCOME

● A set of concrete recommendations for national stakeholders

● Create understanding, awareness and discussion about citizen science as a

scientific method and a community

● Catalyze a research agenda for new kind of open citizen science

BIODIVERSITY MAP

We are building a web-based map that shows the biodiversity value of any selected point in the nature. With biodiversity map we aim to support a fact-based public dialogue on forest management, thus supporting forest stewardship.

Public information on the biodiversity- and preservation values of areas will be made easy to access and understand and available as open data. This will enable private landowners to target forest harvesting to less valuable areas, enhance their willingness to select alternative harvesting methods (partial harvest instead of clear cutting) and direct land use of valuable areas to recreational purposes.

The map is based on open data from Finnish government data resources. We are using open technologies, open standards and open source code.

The project started in January 2015. The goal for the years 2015-2016 is to create a prototype of the biodiversity map in a selected municipality in Finland. The project was granted computing and server capacity in 2015 from JulkiICTlab. The project received a grant from Wihuri foundation in 2015.

COMMON KNOWLEDGE PRACTISES IN RESEARCH AND DECISION-MAKING

The aim of the project is to find out what kind of tools and methods could be used in government in order to utilize knowledge management and research data even better in decision making.

OUTCOME

Theoretical study, 30+ interviews and 4 experiments in new tools and methods such as data visualization, open impact assessment, real-time document editing, real-time fact-checking.

Hack4FI – Hack your heritage hackathon and competition gathers together a diverse group of coders, designers, cultural heritage institutions, artists, graphic designers and others interested in open culture to create new concepts out of old materials.

Hack4FI was held in Finland for the first time in 2015. The hackathon is organised yearly by the local Finnish OpenGLAM-working group AvoinGLAM in collaboration with Finnish culture and memory institutions.
