9. Ons Jabeur 2630 Champion: Birmingham

10. Elina Svitolina 2381 Champion: Chicago 250

Her ascendancy to the WTA Top 10 is another trailblazing milestone for Jabeur. She is the first Arab woman to win a WTA title, which she achieved earlier this year at the Viking Classic Birmingham, and is the first to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal after making the last eight at the 2020 Australian Open (which she’s since matched with the same result at The Championships, Wimbledon, in 2021). Jabeur also became the first Arab woman to progress beyond a WTA quarterfinal, following her run to the title match at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow in 2018.

HISTORY MADEWith her QF win over Kontaveit yesterday, Ons Jabeur will make her Top 10 debut in singles when the rankings are updated on Monday, October 18, becoming the first Arab woman or man to enter tennis’ elite ranking bracket. It marked Jabeur’s 48th match win of 2021, the most by any player on the WTA Tour this season.

RANKING PROJECTIONSJabeur is not the only one on the verge of a rankings breakthrough after this tournament.

Paula Badosa will acheive a new career high on Monday based on her results here. She is projected to move to No.21 by reaching the SF and crack into the Top 20 at No.16 if she reaches the final and No.13 by winning the title. Her previous career high was No.26 which she hit on August 23, 2021.

Jelena Ostapenko could move to No.26 if she reaches the final and as high as No.20 if she wins the title (No.21 if Badosa wins her SF match). Should this happen, it would be her first time inside the Top 20 since October 2018.

Victoria Azarenka is projected to move to No.28 by reaching the SF, No.26 by reaching the final and as high as No.17 by winning the title (No.18 if Badosa wins her SF match).

Four singles players have already qualified for the WTA Finals: Ashleigh Barty, Aryna Sabalenka, Barbora Krejcikova and Karolina Pliskova.By reaching the quarterfinals at the BNP Paribas Open, Ons Jabeur has overtaken Naomi Osaka in eighth place on the leaderboard. The Tunisian would need to reach the final to climb any higher this week. However, Paula Badosa could still replace Jabeur in the final qualifying spot when the post-Indian Wells leaderboard is unveiled. To do so, she must lift the title.Among the qualifying contenders, Garbiñe Muguruza, Maria Sakkari, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Jabeur and Kerber have all entered next week’s Kremlin Cup in Moscow. Elina Svitolina is due to play the WTA 250 event in Tenerife.

A SNAPSHOT OF 2021

RETURNING CHAMPVictoria Azarenka is the only former champion remaining in the tournament, winning the title here in 2012 and 2016. Should she win her next two matches, Azarenka would become the first woman in history to win the BNP Paribas Open three times. She is currently tied with Martina Navratilova, Mary Joe Fernandez, Steffi Graff, Lindsay Davenport, Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters, Daniela Hantuchová and Maria Sharapova; all of whom have lifted the trophy in Indian Wells twice.

By winning today and reaching the final, she would have the third most match wins in Indian Wells at 33 behind Davenport (47) and Sharapova (38) and become the eighth woman to appear in three or more finals in Indian Wells: Davenport (6), Graf (3), Martina Hingis (3), Clijsters (3), Sharapova (3), S.Williams (3) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (3).

PATRIOT GAMESVictoria Azarenka is looking to bring the title back home to Belarus while Ons Jabeur has already made history by being the first Tunisian woman to reach the semifinal and will become the first Arab man or woman to crack into the Top 10 on Monday. However both Paula Badosa and Jelena Ostapenko have a chance to make history for their countries at Indian Wells. Although Spain has seen success here before, Badosa is trying to become the first ever champion from the nation to lift the trophy at the BNP Paribas Open. Conchita MartÍnez came close with her two runner-up finishes in 1992 (l. Seles) and 1996 (l. Graf) losing to the World No.1 in both instances.

Ostapenko would also become the first ever Latvian champion in Indian Wells. The country’s previous best result was from her compatriot, Anastasija Sevastova, who reached the fourth round in 2018 where she fell to Venus Williams.
