ATHLETICSFrom our nationally competitive teamsand state-of-the-art facilities to club and contract sports opportunities, SEM offers a wide variety of choices forathletes of every skill level. We offer 18interscholastic sports teams, and aremembers of the Monsignor MartinLeague, the Midwest Girls’ LacrosseLeague, Mid-Atlantic District of theInter-Scholastic Sailing Association, U.S.Squash and U.S. Rowing. Contract sportsare available to students who haveexceptional talent in an athletic area notoffered at SEM. Recent students havecompeted in horseback riding, ice skating,skiing and dance. Our program promotesleadership, good sportsmanship,commitment, and individual as well asteam excellence.

A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE A SEM education fosters a multicultural,global perspective. The diversity andcohesion of our student population was remarked upon by John Chubb,P resident of the National Association of Independent Schools. “I toured theschool, guided by one local and oneinternational student. I was struck by their obvious kinship and by theaffection among students of all types, in classrooms, the cafeteria, thegymnasium, everywhere.” Studentsfrom Asia (China, Korea, Japan andTaiwan) comprise 15% of ourpopulation. We have also welcomedboarding students from Europe, LatinAmerica and Australia. Within our daypopulation, 13% are African American,and nearly 10% include backgroundsthat are Middle Eastern, NativeAmerican and Hispanic. Because we are nonsectarian, we welcome studentsfrom diverse religious backgrounds. SEM also provides opportunities to travel and study abroad.

Nonsectarian since ourfounding in 1851, we provide a culture ofmutual respect for individual differences.Our curriculum is designed to ensure thatall students are well grounded in all of the traditional disciplines. Within these disciplines, girls are inspired to pursue patterns of rigorous thought, fruitful reflection, and clear expression as skills essential to a process of lifelong learning.Our one-to-one tablet computer programensures that each girl learns to research and manage information with confidenceand sophistication. Our successful collegecounseling pairs an emphasis onachievement with finding the best fit so she can continue to flourish.

AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOLAt SEM, we believe in standards - but notstandardization. As an independentschool, we’re not limited by the Regentsrequirements mandated by New YorkState. By her junior and senior years, inaddition to taking honors and AdvancedPlacement courses, a SEM student canpursue electives that explore specificinterests such as urban studies, theater,oceanography or gothic literature. Moreimportantly, all SEM students areencouraged to pursue academic workwithin courses or by creating their own.Accredited by the New York StateAssociation of Independent Schools(NYSAIS), we are also a member of theNational Coalition of Girls’ Schools(NCGS), the Online School for Girls(OSG), and The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS).

From our dailyall-school Morning Meeting andsinging our alma mater, to ourAcademic and Social Honor Code, to the spirited fun of our Hornet-Jacket competitions, SEM iscommitted to creating a respectfuland dynamic community for bothstudents and faculty alike.

COMMUNITY SERVICECommunity service is an integral part of life atSEM. Through service to others, students discover their connections to thelarger community. Last year, 100% of ourstudents completed all of their communityservice projects.
