This session will offer tools for student self-assessment and

strategies for that information to be used in goal-setting.

The Process for Self-Assessment & Goal-Setting

1. Understand yourself. 2. Determine what you want.3. Develop goals.4. Prepare action plan.5. Implement and monitor progress.

“Self-reflection is a humbling process.

It’s essential to find out why

you think, say, and do certain things . . . then better yourself.”

-Sonya Teclai

Dove: The compassionate and peaceful dove is loyal, friendly, hard working, and a great team player but tends to avoid change, confrontation, risk-taking, and assertiveness.

Strengths Weaknesses

Owl: The wise owl is logical, mathematical, methodical, and sometimes seen as a perfectionist. The owl can be slow to make decisions and inflexible if rules and logic says otherwise. Owls are not big risk takers but love detail.

Strengths Weaknesses

Peacock: The showy peacock loves talking, being the centre of attention, has passion/enthusiasm and is happy/optimistic. Peacocks can be accused of talking too much, and aren’t good with detail or time-control.

Strengths Weaknesses

Eagle: The bold eagle is dominant, stimulated by challenge, decisive, and direct. Eagles can be blunt/stubborn, can lose sight of the big-picture, and can be insensitive to other people’s needs. Eagles are natural achievers.

If you . . . are frustrated by routine, small talk, cheating, silly arguments, social functions, and people who just can’t get it together, GO STAND in the GREEN corner.

If you . . .

are frustrated by irresponsibility, lack of planning, lack of discipline, laziness, and risk-taking, GO STAND in the GOLD corner.

If you . . .

are frustrated by lying, conflict, violence, rejection, lack of communication, and sarcasm, GO STAND in the BLUE corner.

If you . . . are frustrated by rules and laws, routine, deadlines, paperwork, lack of adventure, and just too much structure, GO STAND in the ORange Corner.

What About Us Frustrates Others?

Once we understand ourselves and others, we can help one another to reach our full potential by identifying strategies to work together.

If you . . . Have ever been referred to as • a control freak• bossy• obsessive• judgmental• a planner• demandingHEAD to the GOLD corner.

If you . . . • don’t plan• avoid conflict• get emotional• are a dreamer• hide your problems• worry about others more than yourself

HEAD to the BLUE corner.

If you . . . Get frequent reminders about • Ignoring rules• Being undisciplined• Being quick-tempered• Thinking aLOUD• Being too loud• Being impulsive

HEAD to the ORANGE corner.

If you . . . Have been known to • be anti-social • use BIG words• show off your intelligence• blow up when criticized• go against the flow• be TOO independent

HEAD to the GREEN corner.

The WOOP Protocol WOOP enables you to identify an important wish, imagine both the

outcome and obstacle, then make a plan to overcome the barriers

preventing you from accomplishing your desires. Think about your

True Colors. Here is the process:

Wish something you really want to accomplish

Outcome the result of reaching your goal; how it will make you feel

Obstacle The personal problems that stand in your

way

Plan the action you can take to overcome the

obstacle(s) and achieve your goal

The WOOP ProtocolExample

W I wish I could hide my orange in math and still be successful.

O I would feel like I was not always in trouble or annoying my teacher.

O I’m afraid if I blurt out what I am thinking, I will not remember what I just figured out.

P If I need to share during solo-time, I will try to write my thoughts in my journal. If we are using our Chromebooks, I will try to use screencastify or awwapp to record my thinking.

The WOOP ProtocolExample

W I wish I did not have so much to do.

O I will feel like I can say NO when people ask me to do things I don’t want to do or when I am stressed with a million things to do.

O I am scared that if I don’t do what others ask of me, I will make them unhappy or even mad.

P If I don’t want to do something or feel like I have too much to do, I will be honest, apologize, and invite people to ask me some other time.

The WOOP ProtocolEXAMPLE

W I want to play this song without making any mistakes.

O I’ll be happy because people will rock out to my tunes!

O I don’t practice the hard parts because I get frustrated.

P If I get frustrated, I will take it slowly and practice one note at a time.

The WOOP ProtocolEXAMPLE

W I want to have a Growth Mindset when I work with a team, but I seem to always point out the negatives.

O I’ll be more successful with my team. People will be less annoyed by my criticism. I’ll be pleased.

O The more I observe, the more I notice flaws, and then that is all I see.

P If I notice a flaw, I will look for a positive to share with the team first. If I can’t find a positive, I won’t share the negative as a statement. I will ask a question instead.

The WOOP Protocol

Make Sure to● do WOOP in order,● encourage visualization,● let students guide the process and ● conclude the process and identify next steps.

Habits to Support WOOPUse WOOP as the intention for the day.Schedule JOURNAL/ePortfolio time for students to reflect on their WOOPs, modify WOOPs, and write new WOOPs. Regularly meet with students to conference about WOOPs.
