Siemens Subscriber Networks – End User Software License and Limited Warranty

INSTALLATION OF THE HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE PROVIDED BY SIEMENS SUBSCRIBER NETWORKS (SIEMENS) CONSTITUTES ACCEPTANCE BY YOU OF THE TERMS OF THE FOLLOWING SOFTWARE LICENSE AND LIMITED WARRANTY. IF YOU DO NOT ACCEPT THESE TERMS, PLEASE RETURN THE HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE IN ITS ORIGINAL PACKAGING TO THE STORE OR OTHER VENDOR FROM WHICH YOU PURCHASED IT FOR A FULL REFUND OF THE PURCHASE PRICE.

The following describes your license to use the software (the “Software”) that has been provided with your SIEMENS DSL customer premises equipment (“Hardware”) and the limited warranty that SIEMENS provides on its Software and Hardware.

Software License

The Software is protected by copyright laws and international copyright treaties. The Software is licensed and not sold to you. Accordingly, while you own the media (CD ROM or floppy disk) on which the Software is recorded, SIEMENS retains ownership of the Software itself.

1. Grant of License. You may install and use one (and only one) copy of the Software on the computer on which the Hardware is being installed. If the Hardware is being installed on a network, you may install the Software on the network server or other server-side device on which the Hardware is being installed and onto the client-side devices connected to the network as necessary.

2. Restrictions. The license granted is a limited license. You may NOT:

sublicense, assign, or distribute copies of the Software to others; decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble or otherwise reduce the Software or any part thereof to a human perceivable form; modify, adapt, translate or create derivative works based upon the Software or any part thereof; or rent, lease, loan or otherwise operate for profit the Software.

3. Transfer. You may transfer the Software only where you are also transferring the Hardware. In such cases, you must remove all copies of the Software from any devices onto which you have installed it, and must ensure that the party to whom you transfer the Hardware receives this License Agreement and Limited Warranty.

4. Upgrades Covered. This license covers the Software originally provided to you with the Hardware, and any additional software that you may receive from SIEMENS, whether delivered via tangible media (CD ROM or floppy disk), down loaded from SIEMENS or delivered through customer support. Any such additional software shall be considered “Software” for all purposes under this License.

5. Export Law Assurance. You acknowledge that the Software may be subject to export control laws and regulations of the U.S.A. You confirm that you will not export or re-export the Software to any countries that are subject to export restrictions.

6. No Other Rights Granted. Other than the limited license expressly granted herein, no license, whether express or implied, by estoppel or otherwise, is granted to any copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret, or other proprietary rights of SIEMENS.

7. Termination. Without limiting SIEMENS’s other rights, SIEMENS may terminate this license if you fail to comply with any of these provisions. Upon termination, you must destroy the Software and all copies thereof.

Limited Warranty

The following limited warranties provided by SIEMENS extend to the original end user of the Hardware/licensee of the Software and are not assignable or transferable to any subsequent purchaser/licensee.

1. Hardware. SIEMENS warrants that the Hardware will be free from defects in materials and workmanship and will perform substantially in compliance with the user documentation relating to the Hardware for a period of one year from the date the original end user received the Hardware.

1. OverviewCongratulations! You purchased the new Gigaset® Residential Wireless Gateway— a multi-function device that provides:

• A built-in DSL modem that lets multiple users share Internet access.• A one- to four-port 10/100 Ethernet Switch for 10Base-T or 100Base-T connections.• Custom controls that let you configure the Gateway to best meet your specific security and

Internet-sharing needs.• A built-in integrated 802.11g/802.11b wireless interface.

Gateway Features We carefully designed the Gigaset Gateway to incorporate many advanced features sophisticated functions while being easy-to-use.

Network (LAN) Features• One- or Four-Port 10/100 Ethernet Switch—The Gigaset Gateway incorporates a one- or

four-port 10/100 Ethernet switch that makes it easy to create or extend your network. You can also configure the fourth port as a WAN port for connection to another broadband device.

• DHCP Server Support—The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) provides a dynamic, “on-demand,” IP Address to computers and other networked devices. Your Gateway can act as a DHCP Server for devices attached to your local network.

• Network Status and Statistics—These diagnostic tools let you easily monitor the status of each network connection and evaluate network performance.

• USB Connection—The Gigaset Gateway Model SE568 includes a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection that can connect up to 127 peripheral devices, such as mice, modems, and keyboards. The USB connection also supports UPnP installation and hot plugging.

Security Features• Password-Protected Configuration —The Gateway uses password protection to prevent

unauthorized users from modifying the Gateway’s configuration data and settings.• Network Address Translation (NAT) Protection —The Gateway uses NAT technology to let

your network users share a single IP Address, hiding the location and even the existence of each computer. From the external viewpoint, there is no network, only a single device— the Gateway.

• Stateful Inspection Firewall —The Gateway automatically monitors all incoming data packets and filters all incoming server requests, thus protecting your network from malicious attacks from external sources.

• Attack Protection System— The Gateway automatically protects your system from outside attacks. These attacks may be the type that flood your Internet connection with invalid data packets and connection requests, using so much bandwidth and so many resources that Internet access becomes unavailable, or other common hacker attacks.

Page 10: Seimens SE567 Router Manual

Configuration & Management

• Easy Setup—The Gateway uses your Web Browser for quick and easy configuration.• UPnP Support —The Gateway’s Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) allows automatic discovery

and configuration of the Gateway. UPnP is supported by Windows® operating systems, including ME and XP.

Advanced Gateway Functions• DMZ — The Gateway lets you configure one computer on your local network to provide

unrestricted two-way communication with servers or individual users on the Internet. This lets you run programs that are incompatible with firewalls.

• Firewall “Snooze”—The Gateway lets you temporarily disable firewall protection to limit interference with games and other applications incompatible with firewalls.

• Content Filter —The Gateway provides a content filter that lets you block individual users from accessing undesirable Web sites. You can define the content filtering differently for each user.

• Time-of-Day Use Restrictions—The Gateway lets you limit the time of day that individual users can access the Internet. You can define the time limitations differently for each user.

• Advanced Wireless Controls—The Gateway has a built-in wireless interface with custom configuration options such as: wireless access control, 64-bit, 128-bit, or WAP wireless encryption, disabling of SSID broadcast, and passphrase key generation for added security.

Communicating with the GatewayWhether you are configuring the Gateway’s network software, or performing maintenance or diagnostics, you will regularly have to provide information to the Gateway. In turn, the Gateway software also provides information to you. The Gateway provides several ways for you to convey information on the screens, and you should be familiar with them. The method used depends on the type of information required. For example, when you can select only one of a very small number of options, you might specify your choice by clicking a radio button. If a few more selections are available, you might indicate your selection by highlighting an item in a drop-down menu. The Gateway also uses a variety of methods to provide information to you — to help you select or perform functions. For example, positioning the cursor over an icon usually results in a textual hint displaying on top of the icon. Other methods include the Help button, at the upper right of the Menu Bar, or the Learn More icon, which displays specific information about the current function. The Gateway also provides helpful informational and error messages on the screen that let you know what the system is currently doing or information you entered incorrectly on a screen. These messages usually display on a separate screen or window.

Logging In and Out of the GatewayIn the section The Menu Bar, we discussed the Log In drop-down menu. The Log In window is how you’ll access any of the network functions.

• Logging in as a user without Administrator capabilities gives you limited configuration rights – depending on the features that your Administrator has assigned.

• Logging in as an Administrator gives you full configuration rights. After logging in as an Administrator, the Log In selection changes to Log Out, showing that you are currently logged in as an Administrator.

Note: Pay special attention to Log In identifier to ensure that you are logged in correctly to access all of the available features.

Logging InAdministrators are always required to Log In to the Gateway. This protects unauthorized users fromaccessing and possibly changing your network settings. Depending on the way your Gateway is setup, however, logging in may or may not be required for network users.

1. In the upper left corner of the Network Home Page window, click on the arrow at the left of the Log In field to display the drop-down.

2. Click Go to display the Log In window.

Page 14: Seimens SE567 Router Manual

3. In the Username field:

a. If the Gateway requires logging in, type the username you were assigned by the Administrator.

b. To login as the Administrator, type the assigned Administrator username. c. Press TAB to move to the next field.

4. With the cursor in the Password field, type the password associated with the selected user. 5. When you have completed the entries, click the Log In button at the bottom of the window.

The system displays your Network Home Page, and the Log In option becomes the Log Outoption.

Logging Out If your Gateway requires logging in and out, it’s important to remember to Log Out when you are through using the system. This helps keeps unauthorized users from using any special access rights that are assigned to your username.

1. At the top of the screen, click Go next to Log Out.

2. The Network Home Page re-displays, and the Log Out option returns to the Log In option.

3. Installing the GatewayIn Chapter 2, Before You Begin, you prepared your computer’s hardware and software to work with the Gateway. We’ll use this chapter to tell you more about installing the Gateway’s physical components. These components must be connected and operating correctly before the Gateway can communicate with your computer system or the Internet. Using the steps in this chapter, you will:

 Install line filters, as necessary.

Attach cables between the Gateway and your computer system.

Configure the network settings on your computer.

If your computer uses Microsoft Windows, configure specific settings for Internet access.

Before you start… Before you begin this procedure:

Make sure that you have successfully completed all of the requirements defined in Chapter 2, Before You Begin.

Ensure that you have enough line filters to complete the installation. Additional filters can be purchased from your Internet Service Provider.

As you complete specific steps in the installation procedure, the system will request that you reboot the Gateway. When this occurs: 1. At the rear of the Gateway, turn the power to Off. 2. Wait five (5) seconds, 3. On the Gateway, turn the power to On.

Observe the following safety guidelines both when installing and using the Gateway. • Never install telephone wiring during a storm.• Avoid using a telephone during an electrical storm — lightning increases the risk of

electrical shock.• Do not install telephone jacks in wet locations and never use the product near water.• Do not exceed the maximum power load ratings for the product — you risk dangerous

overloading of the power circuit.

Step 1: Placing the Gateway Place the Gateway at any convenient location in your office or home without special wiring or cooling requirements. However— make sure that you comply with the general safety guidelines specified in the section Before You Begin.

Step 2: Installing the Line FiltersYour DSL line uses the telephone in your home or office to connect to the Internet. If any additional devices are connected to the phone line (such as telephones, fax machines, answering machines, etc.), you’ll separate the two signals so they do not interfere with each other. A line filter (which may or may not be included with Gateway Installation Kit) prevents DSL traffic from disrupting the voice signal on the telephone line, and vice versa.Note: This section may not apply to you. If you are not sure, contact your Internet Service Provider. You’ll use one or both of the line filters described below. Be sure to connect the line filters in the correct direction. Your DSL performance will be significantly degraded if the line filters are not installed correctly.

In-Line Filters: Use in-line filters between standard telephone devices and wall plates.

Wall-Mount Filters: Use wall-mount filters for telephone devices that are attached to a wall.

Installing In-Line Filters

1. Unplug the device’s cord from the telephone jack.

2. Plug the filter into the telephone jack.

3. Plug the telephone cord (or other device cord) into the filter.

For more detailed information about the Gateway’s security levels and how to configure them, click on the Security Level entry in the left column of the table.

Security Level Description

Disable Provides no security on your Gateway’s wireless network. Not recommended.

WEP 64- Bits

The least secure WEP option. WEP security offers the same security offered by a wired LAN with encrypted packets. 64-bit refers to the depth of the encryption. You specify whether the system uses Open System keys or a Shared Key.

WEP 128-BitsThe most secure WEP option. Similar to the WEP 64-Bits security level, however, uses 128-bit encryption. You specify whether the system uses Open System keys or a Shared Key.

WPA-PSK TKIP

WPA security changes encryption keys after a specified amount of time. This option uses WPA technology in conjunction with the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) to provide a more powerful security protocol than WEP. You specify the Shared Key, and key renewal options.

WPA-PSK AESThis option uses the same WPA technology as described above, in conjunction with the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) to support a private key algorithm that ranges from 128- to 256-bits.

Note: The wireless security level setting on the Gateway must be identical to all of the wireless devices attached to your network to provide correct communication and security.

Security Level: Disable

In this step, you are establishing the security level for your wireless network. Setting the wireless security level to Disable lets anyone within range who had wireless capabilities access your network. If they can access your network, they can potentially damage your network and computer system, or access personal information such as financial records.

We highly recommend setting your wireless security level at minimum of WEP 64-bits.

To set the Gateway’s wireless security level to Disable:

1. In the drop-down menu, highlight the entry Disable.2. Click Next. 3. The Gateway Setup Wizard displays the Finish window. Proceed to Step 6: Completing the

6. Using the Gateway’s Advanced Features

In the last chapter, you customized your Gateway network. You setup the users authorized to access your network and how they will access it, including the features and functions that they can use. In this chapter you’ll build on all of the configuration steps you’ve already completed. We won’t follow the any particular sequence, since you can use these functions in any order. You must be logged in as the Administrator to use these function. You’ll access the advanced features through the Gateway icon on the Menu Bar. Some of the features, such as the Security, use the same or very similar screens and functions as were used by the Gateway Setup Wizard. We won’t duplicate that information here. Instead, we’ll direct you to the previous documentation. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will use most of the Gateway’s advanced functions to provide Technical Support for your network. Most of these functions require specific information and guidance from your ISP. Others require at least a mid-level understanding of networking principles. These features provide configuration flexibility for advanced users.

Some of the features described in this chapter can severely degrade or cripple your system or its communication with the Internet. If a feature identifies the need for information or guidance from your ISP do not continue without that information.

Configuring UPnP SettingsThe Gateway uses Microsoft’s Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology to provide direct communication with certain Windows operating systems. This lets the Gateway and the operating system trade information about the special needs of certain applications (such as messaging programs and interactive games), and provide information about other devices on the network. This communication ability greatly reduces the amount of manual configuration required to use new applications and devices.Only certain versions of Windows XP and computers support the UPnP function. Before configuring this option, make sure that UPnP is installed on your computer and enabled. Use the following procedure to install UPnP components.

Verifying UPnP Functionality

1. At the Windows screen, click Start > Settings > Control Panel.

2. At the Windows Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components. The Windows Components Wizardwindow displays, similar to that shown.

3. Click Networking Services, then clickDetails to display the Networking Services window.

4. Highlight the entry Universal Plug and Play, then click OK. The system installs the UPnP components automatically.

5. When you have completed the installation, go to My Network Places. An additional icon should appear labeled Residential Gateway Device.

6. Double-click the icon. The Gateway automatically opens another Web page for UPnP functions. The system can now provide NAT functionality. This functionality lets the Gateway create virtual servers automatically when it detects that the computer running Internet applications requires this configuration.

Security Functions

Option Description

Firewall Settings DSL and cable Internet services are always available, which make them more vulnerable to attacks from the outside. A Firewall is a software program that protects against these attacks.

Admin Password For security reasons, you’ll want to occasionally change the Administrator’s password. You must have Administrator rights to perform this function.

Address Translation The Gateway’s Address Translation feature lets your network computers access the Internet and related applications, but “hide” behind a single outward-facing address. Use this feature to increase your Gateway’s security since other Internet users cannot determine the actual source address of your network’s computers.

Configuring Firewall SettingsDSL and cable Internet services are always available, which make them more vulnerable to attacks from the outside. A Firewall is a software program that protects against these attacks. The Firewall was designed specifically to control access to the network by examining every data packet that passes through the data lines – regardless of direction – and stops the ones that look unacceptable. The Firewall bases its examination on firewall filter rules. When the Firewall detects a gap in protection, it notifies the network Administrator. At the Security Options window, click Firewall Settings to display the Firewall Settings window.

The text briefly describes that various levels of security are available, depending on your needs and the window functions. The text in the left column describes the type of firewall and functionality, such as Security, then breaks the Security functionality down further into Level, Attack Detection, or IP Filtering. The second column contains checkboxes that immediately show if that Gateway feature is currently turned ON (the box is checked) or OFF the box is empty. The third column contains links that let you quickly access the screens required to configure the associated functionality. You can perform the following functions at this window:

• Click a checked box to quickly turn that function OFF. • Click an empty checkbox to quickly turn that function ON. • Click Configure… to establish or change the settings for the associated function.

At Security, Level, click the Configure… to display the window below. The text on the screen describes the levels of security available and how they protect your system – or not!

Level Description

Off The lowest security level possible – NONE! No attacks from the outside can be detected. We do not recommend this setting.

Low Minimal protection. Internet access is available, and attacks from the outside can be detected and logged to a file.

High Better protection. Provides attack detection and logging, and only lets specific applications or traffic access the Internet.

Custom Protection that you design specific to your requirements using the IP Filtering function.

To configure security settings:

1. At the Select Firewall Level field, click the down arrow to display the drop-down menu.

2. Highlight the level of security for your network. 3. Click Apply to have the system automatically save the information.

Configuring Attack DetectionThe Gateway’s Attack Detection feature catches outside attacks on the network as they happen, and records information about the attack in the Firewall Log. Due to the variety of data that can be sent across the network, the Gateway lets you determine:

• If the feature is to be used, • If used, how the Gateway handles certain types of data transmissions, and • If the Gateway is to record information about those transmissions in the Firewall Log.

You can view the Firewall Log anytime, using the Statistics function discussed in the chapter Monitoring the Gateway’s Health. At the function Security, Attack Detection, click Configure… to display the window below. Due to the amount of data on this window, some of the fields can only be seen by scrolling down.

The text in the left column lists possible types of data that can be transmitted to the Gateway. The second column contains checkboxes that designate if the Gateway is to filter the associated transmission type. The third column contains checkboxes that designate if the Gateway is to log information about the associated transmission type to the Firewall Log. You can specify both filtering and logging for all listed data transmissions or by specific type. The table below describes the types of transmission (or events) that the Gateway can monitor.

Data Transmission Types Description

Same Source and Destination Address

An outside device sends a synchronize (SYN) packet to a host with the same source and destination address (including port) causing the system to hang. When the receiving host responds to the source address in the packet, it ends up just sending it back to itself. This packet can ping-pong back and forth over 200 times (consuming CPU resources) before being discarded.

Broadcast Source Address An outside device sends a ping to your Gateway broadcast address using a forged source address. Responding to these pings can bring your system down with echo replies.

Page 84: Seimens SE567 Router Manual

Data Transmission Types Description

LAN Source Address on WAN

An outside device sends a forged source address in an incoming IP packet to block trace back.

Invalid IP Packet Fragment

Fragmented data packets that can bring down your system. IP packets can be fairly large in size. If a link between two hosts transporting a packet can only handle smaller packets, the large packet may be split (or fragmented) into smaller ones. When the packet fragments get to the destination host, they must be re-assembled into the original large packet like pieces of a puzzle. A specially crafted invalid fragment can cause the host to crash.

TCP NULL An IP packet with the protocol field set to TCP but with an all null TCP header and data section. Responding to this attack will bring down your system.

TCP FIN Using TCP FIN, this attack brings down your system by never allowinga data packet to finish transmitting.

TCP XMAS TCP packets with all the flags set, slowing your system to a halt.

Fragmented TCP Packet Fragmented packets that allow an outside user Telnet access to a device on your network.

Fragmented TCP Header TCP packets with only a header and no payload. When the Gateway receives numerous packets in this manner, your system slows and halts.

Fragmented UDP Header Fragmented UDP headers that can bring down a device on your network.

Fragmented ICMP Header Fragmented ICMP headers that can bring down a device on your network.

Inconsistent UDP/IP header lengths

Inconsistent UDP/IP headers that can bring down a device on your network.

Inconsistent IP header lengths

Changes in the IP header that zero the fragment offset field. This istreated as a complete packet when received and cause your system to halt.

Configuring Address Translation The Gateway’s Address Translation feature lets your network computers access the Internet and related applications, but “hide” behind a single outward-facing address. This increases your Gateway’s security since other Internet users cannot determine the actual source address of your network’s computers. The Gateway provides two methods of hiding your users:

• Address Translation (NAT), an Internet standard that lets a LAN use two (2) sets of IP Addresses: one set for internal traffic and a second set for external traffic.

• Port By-Pass (NAPT), which is only supported by TCP, UDP, and ICMP protocols. NAPT lets many devices connected to the Gateway access the Internet while masking the identification of the internal IP Addresses.

At the Security Options window, clicking the Address Translation icon displays the Address Translation (NAT/NAPT) window.

To enable and configure the Gateway’s address translation feature:

1. At the Address Translation (NAT/NAPT) window, at the field Select Interface, use the drop-down menu to select the connection you currently want to configure.

LoggingThe Gateway provides extensive activity logs for advanced troubleshooting and administrative use. The following types of logs are available: System, Firewall, and User Access.

System Logging

System logging displays Gateway status, user login, interfaces accessed, etc. • You determine the type of activity included in the display using checkboxes at the bottom of the

window. After making changes to the boxes, click Apply. The window refreshes, displaying the newly defined data.

• You can clear the contents of the system log or save the content to a text file using the appropriate buttons, Clear Log or Save Log.

Firewall Logging

The Gateway records all attempts to access data through the firewall, both failures and successes. Firewall log entries are defined on the Firewall Settings Configuration window found under the Security menu.

DiagnosticsThe Gateway provides diagnostic tests and data for each interface. Your ISP’s technical support usually requests this information to assist in troubleshooting. At the Gateway Health Monitoring window, click the Diagnostics icon to display the Diagnostics window.

To use the Diagnostics feature:1. At the Diagnostics window, select a connection to test from the Connection to Test drop-down menu.

Note: You must scroll all the way to the bottom of this window to display this drop-down menu.

2. Click Run Diagnostics. The system displays the results in a set of tables, as shown below. Pay special attention to any tests that report a failing condition and check the connections for these interfaces before running the diagnostics again.

A.TroubleshootingThis chapter covers some common problems that may be encountered while using the Wireless DSL Gateway and some possible solutions to them. If you follow the suggested steps and the Gateway still does not function properly, contact your Internet Service Provider or Technical Support for assistance.

General Issues

Problem: Can't connect to the Gateway to configure it.

Solution: Verify that:• The Gateway is properly installed, connections are OK, and it is powered ON.

Check the LEDs for Ethernet or USB port status.• Your computer and the Gateway are on the same network segment.

If your computer is set to "Obtain an IP Address automatically" (DHCP client), restart your computer.

Internet Access

Problem: When I enter a Web site address or IP address I get a time out error.

Solution: A number of things could be causing this error. Try the following troubleshooting steps.Verify that other computers work. If they do, ensure that your computer’s IP settings are correct. If using a fixed (static) IP address, check the network mask, default Gateway and DNS settings as well as the IP address. If the computers are configured correctly, but still not working, check the Gateway. Ensure that it is connected and on. Connect to it and check its settings. (If you cannot connect to it, check the Ethernet and power connections.)

Problem: Some applications do not run properly when using the Gateway.

Solution: The Gateway processes the data passing through it, so it is not transparent.• If you are running a supported Windows operating system, ensure that the

UPnP feature is enabled. • If this does not solve the problem or your operating system does not support

UPnP you can use the DMZ function. This should work with almost every application, but:

o It is a security risk, since the firewall is disabled for the DMZ computer.o Only one (1) computer can use this feature.

• A third option is to use the Firewall Snooze Control feature to temporarily disable the firewall to let the application run unimpeded.
