India level series with a convincing 35-run win over SA
CHENNAI, Oct 22:
Virat Kohli slammed a bril-liant 138 before the bowlers pro-duced an impressive perform-ance as India comfortably beatSouth Africa by 35 runs to levelthe series 2-2, here today
Courtesy Kohli's century,India piled up a commendable299 for 8 in 50 overs and thenrestricted South Africa to 264 for9 despite a classy hundred bytheir captain AB de Villiers.
In the end, Kohli's 23rdODI hundred proved to be ashade better effort than DeVilliers' 22nd ton in the final con-text of the match. If Kohli'sinnings was about asserting hissupremacy in the limited oversformat, De Villiers was innova-tion personified hitting all roundthe wicket.
Credit should be given toIndia's spin troika of HarbhajanSingh (2/50), Axar Patel (1/40)and Amit Mishra (1/55) for usingthe conditions well along withpacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar(3/68), who got the prize scalp ofopposition captain.
The series will now be decid-ed at Mumbai's WankhedeStadium in the final ODI sched-uled to be played on October 25.
De Villiers battled cramps torace to century but his superb107-ball-112 could not get theProteas home. The South Africanskipper hit 10 fours and two sixesfighting valiantly before a slowbouncer from Bhuvneshwar sawhim try a flat batted shot whichended up as a thickish edge intoMahendra Singh Dhoni's hands.
It was De Villiers' dismissalin the 45th over that decisivelytilted scales in India's favour. When the chase started, Hashim
Amla's (7) woeful run in theseries continued as he pulled onestraight to Shikhar Dhawan atmid-wicket.
Gauging that the pitch wasdry and turn was on offer,Harbhajan was brought in theattack as early as the 9th over.
The 'Turbantor' looked dan-gerous in each of his six overs inthe first spell while he got a bit ofstick towards the end to finishwith 2/50 in 10 overs.
He got the wicket of lastmatch centurion Quinton de Kock(35) just when he was taking onthe attack.
It was a classical off-spinner'sdelivery where he enticed DeKock for a drive with a flighteddelivery that spun away from theleft-hander taking the outsideedge which was held by AjinkyaRahane at second slip.
Faf du Plessis (17) was a bitruffled as a powerful hit from DeVilliers hit his elbow. He wassoon dismissed when he wasadjudged caught behind off Axarbowling. While Du Plessis lookedunhappy, the snickometer showedsome noise when the ball passedthe bat.
From 79 for 3, it soon became88 for four when Harbhajanbowled one that straightened suf-ficiently after pitching to hitDavid Miller (6) plumb in-front.
However, De Villiers coun-tered the turn with footwork as hegot a partner in FarhaanBehardien (22) as they steadilybuilt a partnership of 56 runs forthe fifth wicket.
It was leg-spinner Mishra, who accounted for Behardien inthe 32nd over which turned out tobe a wicket-maiden. (PTI)
