Children’s Week is a national celebration of children’s rights, talents and citizenship and
always celebrated around Universal Children’s Day which is held on the 4th Wednesday of
October in Australia.
During Children’s Week the Children’s Week Awards are held, recognising children, young
people and members of the community who make a difference for children.
The category areas for nomination are:
ADULT (18 years and older)
CHILD and YOUTH (under 18 years old)
SPECIAL Children’s Week Award

These school holiday activities have been co-designed with children living within the Playford community. Yes, our team of dedicated Community Development Workers really wanted to know what you’d like to see happening within your community and spent a number of days going out to school’s and talking with you to capture your suggestions of what makes a great school holiday program. Thank you for your expertise in telling us what children want and feeding in to the development and design of our flyers to promote the school holiday activities. With how fast the activities booked out it was certainly evident that the information you provided was exactly what the children of Playford were looking for. The 2017 ‘What’s Important to Me’ art exhibition was held in May during Families Week. You may have seen the art works displayed on footpaths, at shops and within your schools providing you with an opportunity for you to vote for your favourite piece of artwork. The top 10 voted artworks as seen on page 6, will be included into the ‘What’s Important to Me’ 2018 State Calendar. The other pieces of artwork will be made into a ’What’s Important to Me’ book and displayed at various venues for all to see. Every year the artwork submissions from children in Playford grow with this year exceeding all expectations with 601 pieces submitted. Bugs n slugs came and bugged us during the holidays. Lots of children and families were amazed by the fantastic creatures on display and really enjoyed being able to touch and handle some of them. Kris from bugs n slugs helped us learn about different types of invertebrates and we discovered that bugs n slugs are really animals that don’t have any bones. Snail racing was a big hit and even toddlers got in on the act with a bit of help from some patient big brothers and sisters. It was great to see so many kids cooperating and working well together so that everyone who wanted to, got a chance to experience all the different activities.
In the April holidays we were lucky enough to have Cam from Goo Roo Animation spend some time with the us at The Platform in Elizabeth for a Claymation workshop. The children were a fantastic bunch and came up with some very creative ideas for their stop motion videos. Everyone gets the impression that Claymation is a long and tedious process, but these children proved otherwise, creating 10 amazing short films in just a few hours. In teams of 3, the kids picked their favourite coloured clay and transformed it into all different shapes and sizes in front of the camera, taking hundreds of photos of tiny movements along the way to produce a stop-motion animated masterpiece. Read Aloud at the Zoo
in partnership with
Playford Communities for Children The day may have been overcast but there were plenty of smiles on the faces of many delighted children and families that found themselves with the equivalent of the ‘golden ticket’ to visit the Adelaide Zoo on Sunday May 7th. International author Mem Fox headlined the Playford Communities for Children Read Aloud at the Zoo Day by reading her well-loved book Possum Magic, followed by a couple of cheeky monkeys in Two Little Monkeys and then the much anticipated reading of her new book I’m Australian Too. After the families received their family goodie bag they set off around the zoo to enjoy the animals, Mickster the Trickster the magician and the reading trail. At each reading station children enjoyed the craft activities created by students from UniSA Magill and story time with an author. Back on the central lawn, Playford Communities for Children were busy creating glitter tattoos and the ladies from Nest Studio had fun painting a big group canvas with the children. The day was rounded out by the authors reading their books: Tania Ingram began with Dog on a Log, followed by Kathy Parker who read Emma the Emu – a poem she had specially written for the day and finally Katrina Germein did her best to get those clouds to action with Big Rain Coming. Congratulations to the reading trail prize winners, the pure elation on the final winner was the perfect end to a terrific day. If you would like to give us feedback about your

We have had an outstanding start to 2017 with over 30 families enrolling to be a part of our HIPPY Elizabeth Age 4 program. HIPPY is a great way for parents to teach their child literacy, numeracy and language skills as well as physical skills so they are school-ready and develop a love of learning in their home environment. In Activity Pack Orange 4 there was an Under the Sea Vocabulary activity. Our age 4 children were able to make scuba masks and explore and talk about all the animals that live under the sea. This was a great opportunity for children to practice their naming words also known as "Nouns" as well as learning about some of the animals that live in the big blue ocean. Here is some of our age 4 HIPPY children wearing their awesome scuba masks that they made themselves and even some of their older siblings joined in the HIPPY fun!!! Term one Kids Club learned about Safety around the neighbourhood, internet safety and Valentine's Day. Children and families joined in and enjoyed learning experiences; cooking heart cookies and making a love bug poster to give to someone they care about. Term 2 2017 Kids Club were Nature Warriors looking at the environment up close and exploring life skills in a fun way. Children and their families discovered how plants grow, experimenting with cooking and investigating the world around us. Join in the fun Monday to Wednesday 3:15pm till 4:30pm. HaRmONy DAY –SOCCER TOURNAMENT On Friday 24th March 2017, Uniting Communities Smithfield, New & Emerging Communities, Playford Communities for Children, Community Access & Services and Craigmore High School hosted HaRmONy DAY SOCCER TOURNAMENT at Craigmore High School. School children were grouped into teams from year 8 to 12. The matches were very interactive and fun! Sporting initiatives like this soccer match help break down barriers and develop trust and engagement between school kids of different cultures. It also helps to open opportunities through building connections towards a sustainable life for all into the future. REFUGEE WEEK Furthermore, New & Emerging Communities hosted a REFUGEE WEEK CELEBRATION on Saturday 24th June 2017 at ULEY ROAD HALL, Lot 806 Forrestall Rd, Elizabeth Downs. Refugee week is an annual week-long celebration of the positive contributions of refugees to Australian society. The theme for Refugee Week in Australia for 2015 to 2017 is “With courage let us all combine”. During this event, Uniting Communities in partnership with Burundian Communities organised number of activities and entertainments including the Jumping castle and different cultural performances. Around 300 Community members attended to connect and celebrate together! New and Emerging Communities enables children and families in the City of Playford region who are recent arrivals to Australia (primarily through Australia’s humanitarian program) to achieve their educational, health, economic and social settlement aspirations. It provides information and support to help these families function more effectively in an unfamiliar culture and become more engaged with the broader community. Men’s Week 2017
On 19th of June the Playford Uniting Church in Munno Para hosted the Northern Men’s Wellbeing Network’s International Men’s week event. The event was a great success with many providers taking time out of their busy schedules to attend and some community members looking for some information pertinent to men’s health also in attendance.
Professor Gary Wittert spoke excellently about the challenges and barriers for men in the current health system and the Member for Light, Tony Piccolo MP launched his initiative called ‘Socks, Jocks & More’ which focusses on providing personal hygiene and basic health products for homeless men or men sleeping rough.
It was a fantastic, well run event. Well done to John Goodger and the Northern Men’s Wellbeing Network for championing men’s health in the Playford region.

With Children at the centre of the work that Communities for
Children Playford does and business the heart of local
community it make sense that we would bring the two
together.
Over the last few months the CfC
Team have been asking the
Children of Playford about the
Businesses they go to and what
makes them child friendly.
The Most common responses are
outlined on the flyer opposite but
some of the more interesting
include:
-Pets are allowed at least outside
and cared for with a bowl of
water.
-They have toilets that can be
used by people cause you still
have to go to the toilet if you are
away from home.
-Adults in shops should smile
and not be grumpy.
Please look out for outstanding
examples of business in Playford
and let us know. If you’re a business that feels you value

Meanwhile ensemble has been hard at work developing their new show based around super heroes. This term the ensemble had the opportunity to create their own super hero character and be filmed in front of a green screen creating their very own super hero movie which was mega exciting for our ensemble. The performance took place
on June 24th 2017 at the Shedley Theatre and the kids did an amazing job.
During the April School holidays the rain cleared and 16 lucky kids got to explore animals, the noises and actions they make and learn more about our furry friends. They then had the opportunity to go to the zoo and enjoy a picnic in the park.

4 Things to say to Your Children At Bedtime
During the drama and busyness of the day we can easily overlook children’s emotional needs and struggles. Dr. Justin Coulson shares four important things to say to your children each night that will strengthen your relationship with your children and keep you in touch.
1. What was great today?
Talking about the “grateful things” builds children’s appreciation and helps them to identify the good things in their lives that makes them happy.
2. What are you looking forward to?
In his book The Optimistic Child, Professor Martin Seligman identifies this question as a personal favourite, because it points our children towards a positive future. Seligman points out that hope and optimism are a powerful deterrent to depression. Plus, we get to be excited with them as they look forward to exciting and positive events.
3. Is there anything you want to talk about?
By giving our children 100% of our attention and focus, children feel safe to share their experiences, emotions, fears and worries. The more we do this, the more comfortable our children become with this questions and empowered they feel.
4. I Love You!
This statement, heartfelt and meaningful, matters more than anything. Say it every night. Make sure it is accompanied by a hug and kiss.
Honest, caring listening may be the most important thing we can do to show our kids we care about them, and to help them really feel it. Those final minutes each night can be a precious – almost sacred – time of listening, repair and love.

Fluffy slime Ingredients
1/2 cup foam Soap hand wash 1/2 cup shaving cream 1 tbsp. corn starch powder 1/2 cup white glue Food coloring to your liking 1 tps Borax 1 cup hot water
Method 1. Start by mixing the Borax with hot water. Stir and set aside 2. Now it’s time to mix all of the rest of the ingredients into a bowl. Add foam soap, shaving cream, corn starch,
white glue, and food colourings. We added about 3 drops of food colourings to get a pretty pastel teal colour, but if you’d like a more vibrant shade, add a few more drops
3. Stir the mixture together until well mixed 4. Now grab your borax water. Begin adding it to the bowl, teaspoon by teaspoon. As you stir it in, you should see
the mixture start to get sticky and tacky. Continue adding the borax water until the slime forms until a glob. 5. Then knead the slime until all the ingredients form one ball of slime and the bowl is clean. 6. And that’s it! DIY fluffy slime in 5 minutes or less!

Kids Cooking Herb & Garlic Sweet
Potato Wedges with
Yoghurt Dip.
Method 1. preheat oven 220
oc (fan forced)
2. 2 Wash sweet potatoes. Cut in to approximately 3 cm thick wedges. 3. Place wedges in a large bowls with rosemary, garlic and olive oil. Toss well with clean hands 4. Spread wedges in a single layer over a greased oven tray. Cook in preheated oven for 20 min. 5. Remove from oven. Turn wedges, then return to oven for a further 15-20 min, or until wedges are
tender and well browned 6. Meanwhile, to make yoghurt dip, combine yoghurt, shallots, cumin, lemon juice, dill and pepper. 7. Serve Wedges with yoghurt dip
Ingredients Yoghurt Dip
2x 400 g (medium) Sweet Potatoes 1 tsp of dried rosemary leaves 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 tst olive oil Olive oil or canola cooking spray for greasing
