Let me first extend a very warm welcome to all participants,

especially our friends from overseas.

It is heartening to note that despite the current economic climate, the growth of the electronics sector remains positive. In a presentation by David Cohen, Director of Asian Economic Forecasting from Action Economics at our recent GlobalTRONICS Media Roundtable discussion, the global consumer electronics revenue is projected to grow by nearly 10 percent in 2008 to $700 billion. There is a continuous appetite for new innovative products, including LCD TVs, DVDs, mobile phones, laptops, video games, camcorders and navigation products. In fact, the Asian retail market has seen a growth of 13 percent year-on-year. In another projection by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), global chip sales is forecasted to grow by 6 percent in 2009.

These positive projections have boosted industry confidence as evident in the participation of 527 international suppliers from 28 countries at GlobalTRONICS this

year. These include national groups from China, Germany, Malaysia, Taiwan and UK. Not forgetting our home-grown suppliers of 47 partici-pating companies that make up the Singapore Pavilion.

I am pleased to also share that more than 62 participating com-panies will be showcasing new products this year. This reinforces the level of exposure and import-ance of GlobalTRONICS as the launch-pad for latest products and new technologies in the industry.

At Reed Exhibitions, we are constantly improving and introduc-ing new features to our events to ensure that we stay current and remain relevant to the industry and market. This year, 2 new special features have been introduced, namely, ‘Go Green’ and ‘Automo-tive’ product segments.

The ‘Go Green’ feature is in line with European Union’s legislation for Lead-free and RoHS-compliant products. At least 20 companies under this feature will showcase their Waste Management, Recycling and Energy Conservation capabilities – a relatively new area of focus that has received a lot of

attention from Environmentalists. Electronics manufacturers will move along in this direction with the aim to protect the environment and save on production costs in the long run.

The ‘Automotive’ feature showcase by some 27 companies is introduced this year in line with the first Formula 1 night race in Singapore. Besides, more and more electronics components and parts can now be found in a vehicle, from radar, transmission electronics, emission control, in-engine electronics to wheel sensor.

Held once every two years since 1992, GlobalTRONICS has evolved to an ideal platform for networking, sourcing, fostering new business relationships and exchanging of ideas. It is the heart of Asia’s Electronics Design, Technology and Manufacturing where we showcase the latest, most advanced and comprehensive range of products, technologies and services worldwide relevant for the South East Asian EMS industry. This year, we also have three specialised conferences and

seminars that will be conducted alongside GlobalTRONICS 2008, namely, the Supply Chain and Logistics Conference, Embedded Systems Seminar and a series of Technical Workshops.

At our last event, overseas visitors accounted for 26 percent of the attendance, of which 70 percent were visitors from South East Asian nations. The high foreign visitorship reinforces the position of GlobalTRONICS as the event that allows exhibitors maximum exposure to industry professionals in the region.

At a time when companies are continuously looking and needing for more efficient ways to promote themselves, to keep up with the competition and face to face con-tacts, GlobalTRONICS becomes even more relevant as THE perfect meeting place.

Inn Atrium Singapore. David

W Bergman, CAE, Vice

President, International

Relations, IPC, presented

the association’s activities

in Asia, including the

standardization activities

of its Technical Group Asia

(TgAsia), which has formed

16 local task groups in China working on IPC standards.

According to Bergman, TgAsia is set up to provide Asian users of IPC

standards a platform to participate in IPC standards development activities

and expand the knowledge of those in the industry. This includes the

translation of IPC standards into Chinese, and creating and developing new

standards that are of interest to the Asian electronics industry. Besides

China, other countries that were covered in the presentation included

Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea and the Philippines.

Bergman also mentioned that IPC will be looking towards the setting

up of standards in photovoltaic manufacturing. Representatives from solder

materials and services providers such as Kester and Alpha Metals took

part in lively discussions on the development of existing standards and test

methods for halogen free.

Goliath vs. the Davids

China has captured 52 percent of

the world’s contract electronics

manufacturing investment and

much has been written about the

competition for inward investment

between China and Southeast

Asian markets. Upbeat predictions

put the Southeast Asian electro-

nics contract-manufacturing market

at $25 billion in 2011, up by $9

billion from $16 billion in 2006.

This represents 7 percent of global

electronics contract-manufacturing

revenue, up from 6.3 percent in

2006. Of all the South East Asian

markets, Vietnam, Singapore and

Malaysia are projected to lead

growth in the region, with Thailand,

Indonesia and the Philippines

trailing behind.

“The differentiating strengths

of the electronics manufactur-

ing base across South East Asia

augurs well for the region,” says

Reid Rasmussen, Head of Fusion

Consulting’s ICT practice. “These

include its high quality, low cost

resources, emerging position as

a potential alternative or comple-

mentary sourcing base to China

as labor costs in China become

higher, and its supply chain speed

and flexibility slows.”

South East Asia’s emer-

ging challengers to China

However, South East Asia’s

major players each need to main-

tain their own competitive edge.

While Singapore, Malaysia and

Vietnam have the biggest potential

to build on their electronics manu-

facturing industries, they will need

to foster continued foreign direct

investment (FDI) in order to do so.

• Singapore

Singapore will attract invest-

ments in high value-added manu-

facturing such as in semiconductor,

hard-disk drives and High Defini-

tion media, propped up by strong

growth in investments in electronic

manufacturing in the defence,

medical, automotive and aerospace

industries. Its challenge remains its

relatively higher labor costs. While

Singapore has a smaller domestic

market, its proximity to consumers

in fast-growing emerging markets

Chart 1: Country competitiveness Chart 2: Market share 2006/2011

and global supply chain hub loca-

tion compensate for that handicap.

• Malaysia

With the Malaysian govern-

ment’s focus on fostering its

high-tech industries, the electron-

ics sector continues to attract and

retain large, high-tech multina-

tionals such as Intel, Dell, AMD,

Sony, Agilent, Seagate, NEC and

Motorola. Its main challenge is to

stay competitive between low-cost

giants like China and India and

R&D centers like Singapore.

• Vietnam

With its attractive low cost base

and government support, Vietnam

is possibly the most

attractive emerging market for

manufacturing companies. It is

likely to grow at over 100 percent

CAGR until 2011, albeit from a

small base, while other South East

Asian players are only showing

single digit growth. Recent inves-

tments by top US, Korean and

Japanese companies, such as Intel,

Samsung, NEC, confirm this trend.

Next steps for Southeast

Asia’s major players

1. Specialisation

South East Asian players

should focus on core competi-

tive strengths and maximize the

advantages of being flexible niche

players within their areas of spe-

cialization, rather than chasing after

too wide a variety of investments.

Singapore will do well as an R&D

and specialized high-tech hub while

developing South East Asian coun-

tries can focus on high-volume

manufacturing to leverage their

competitive wage advantage.

In order to stay competitive and

participate as key players in the

electronics industry, governments

should focus on attracting fast

growing segments, such as mobile

handsets, wireless communica-

tions and consumer electronics.

. Wooing the MNCs

Government incentives and

continued support are also vital.

South East Asian players will have

to leverage existing relationships

and provide incentives for exist-

ing investors to stay. Companies

are accustomed to being wooed

with tax rebates, subsidies and

domestic contracts. In Vietnam

for instance, corporate income tax

has been reduced from 28 to 25

percent and with relaxed foreign in-

vestment rules, foreign companies

can now own up to 49 percent of

local firms. In Malaysia, Motorola

is reported to have been awarded

large contracts as an incentive to

keep its operations in the country,

by Fusion Consulting

The future for South East Asia’s electronics manufacturers in the face of China’s growing dominance

contRact ManUFactURing

following initial intentions to move

to China.

. Growing home markets

Domestic markets will grow

further with the rising spending

power of the local middle class.

As prices drop further, lower class

households will also enter the

market for consumer-oriented

electronics and IT products such

as low cost PCs and mobile

phones. This is especially true for

South East Asian countries such

as Vietnam and Indonesia, where

economic growth is translating into

more disposable income for their

large populations.

. Boosting infrastructure

With Vietnam emerging,

companies in the electronics

sector now have a wider set of

options and possible choices

as locations for manufacturing

bases in Asia. The combination of

Vietnam’s lower direct and indirect

labor costs, large domestic market,

relatively young population and

lower risk of employee turnover

makes the country a strong viable

alternative as a manufacturing

base. However, Vietnam must first

urgently address its infrastructure

weaknesses. The national power

grid needs to be upgraded, and

more needs to be done to create

efficient logistics and material

inflows and outflows. The building

of a large container port in the

South for example, is expected to

help address this issue. Some are

even hoping the port will become a

major Southeast Asian hub.

“Expect to see China losing

share in volume electronics

manufacturing to Southeast Asia,

with significant investments by

the large multinationals in favor of

countries like Vietnam,” predicts

Fusion’s Rasmussen.

Large technology manufacturing companies are adopting a ‘China plus

one’ strategy, seeking more balance in their Asian manufacturing and

diversifying risk by being less dependent on China. This is in the light of

China’s rising labor costs, high employee turnover and to some extent,

greater bureaucracy verses some governments in South East Asia.

The trend towards moving into South East Asian manufacturing

bases is more about extending operations into places like Vietnam, not

necessarily moving out of China.

From its small base, Vietnam’s contract manufacturing is expected

to surge ahead at a CAGR of 120 percent between 2006 and 2011,

compared to 9 percent

for Thailand, 7 percent for

Singapore and 8 percent

for Malaysia. Responsible

for about 50 percent of the

world’s electronics contract

manufacturing, China will

continue to dominate

while South East Asian

countries are expected to

take a higher share of future

investments.

Total commitment to customer satisfactionChristopher J Fussner, President, Trans Technology Pte Ltd

T hese days, the world is looking

at alternative sources of energy

and one of the rising contenders

in this industry is commercial solar

power. Over the years, technologi-

cal advancements have made solar

power more affordable and port-

able. Moreover, this form of energy

would not be affected by supply

and demand factors for it is freely

available.

The SMT industry is going

through a series of evolutionary

changes, including the push

towards lead free electronics

which has inevitably led to our

principals’ products having to be

lead free certified. Secondary to

this, there is a recent increase in

quality assurance challenges for

printed circuit board assemblies

using 01005 chip components

which the various characteristics

of our principals’ AOI machines

undeniably meet today’s

challenges.

As a leading distributor in South

East Asia, our philosophy is simple

– to provide each and every one of

our clients with the most practical,

cost-effective and efficient solution

to their manufacturing needs and

most importantly, to constantly

ensure we satisfy their needs.

“Keep the Customers Happy”

– that’s our motto.

At present, the global

economic crisis and rising oil prices

has certainly influenced sales and

margins are down. To combat

this, Trans-Tec will continue to

demonstrate to our customers our

total commitment to customer

satisfaction. In addition, we have

shifted our sales strategy to involve

the adding of related products and

companies to our total solutions

offering, for example, rework and

repair systems from principals like

VJ Electronix.

Great leap forward into more environmentally friendly technologies Chris Harvey, Technical Sales Manager, Far East Asia Export, Electrolube

There has been a great leap for-

ward into more environmentally

friendly technologies, especially

moving from traditional solvents to

water-based materials for cleaning

operations. One reason has been

the introduction of legislation, but

more and more often engineers

are intrigued by the environmental

soundness of the products, and

they can visualize the cost sav-

ings that can be made by moving

into this type of process. The

requirement from the engineer is

to support the process set-up and

put the procedures in place for the

cleaning of electronic components,

metal parts, PCBs, stencils, jigs

and fixtures. Electrolube has a local

presence and is able to provide

the support on site and whenever

required.

Another key requirement has

been to simplify the procurement

procedures of local companies. Not

only does Electrolube have local

stocking in South East Asia, but we

are also proving to be a “one stop

shop” for chemical requirements.

Electrolube manufactures

cleaning materials, conformal

coatings, epoxy and polyurethane

potting compounds, thermal

management products and a very

comprehensive range of service

and maintenance aids. All products

meet the relevant standards for

example RoHS and REACH, with

some products having MIL, IPC

and UL approvals. Another special

feature of our company is that we

can manufacture bespoke products

for any special requirements or to

solve any specific issues. We will

continue to grow the levels of local

stock and support, and provide

a much more personal and local

presence, especially by working

together with R&D departments.

South East Asia has been

very resilient in the face of

economic challenges and this has

helped our company continue to

grow. The “savvy” customer has

already picked up on the fact that

water-based cleaning materials

and conformal coatings, and more

recently our non VOC conformal

coating, won’t be affected by the

highly fluctuating commodity prices.

They know that there are still large

productivity increases that can be

made and that increased reliability

and performance will help them

Non VOC Conformal Coating NVOC and NVMC are developed by Electrolube to reduce VOC

emissions from electronics manufacturing processes. NVOC

was created by adapting polyurethane pre-polymer with a blend

of carefully chosen diluents to ensure that all materials are

reacted within the system. The diluents chosen offer a massive

reduction in viscosity creating a 100% solids material in a

sprayable format, similar to that of solvent

based materials, without the emission

of any VOCs. VOCs contribute to the

formation of ground-level ozone, a major

component of smog.
