Section A. IntroductionDuring this 80-hour workplace experience, you will be undertaking a variety of duties and tasks that relate to your course and the role of an Animal Care Attendant. Typically, you will be undertaking the same range of duties on many occasions and in a variety of situations. Actually performing a task or activity many times is one of the ways in which we develop skills and expertise. Further, it is frequently a requirement of the units of competency to be assessed on a number of occasions under normal workplace conditions.

This Logbook is an essential part of the Workplace Assessment for the Certificate II in Animal Studies. The Logbook outlines the essential tasks and activities that need to be completed by the student in the workplace. The Logbook also includes a Work Placement Attendance Report for those students undertaking a Work Placement with a Host Organisation.

Section B. How to Complete the LogbookThe student should print a copy of this Logbook and take the copy with them to the workplace each day while they are undertaking the Work Placement or completing the Workplace Assessments.

At the completion of each day, the student should complete the Attendance Report, if required, and note down the specific tasks and activities completed (Section C). The student will need to obtain a signature from the Workplace Supervisor to verify their attendance and that the identified tasks and activities were completed (Section D). A holistic review of student performance will also be undertaken by the Workplace Supervisor prior to the completion of the student’s work placement (Section E).

The following checklist is to be completed by the Workplace Supervisor at the conclusion of the Work Placement or Workplace Assessments. If the Workplace Supervisor is unclear on any of the attributes listed below, they should seek clarification from the Workplace Assessor.

The Workplace Supervisor can also include any comments in the Logbook regarding the student’s performance of the tasks and activities. The student and the Workplace Assessor will receive and review these comments as part of the assessment process.

It is the responsibility of the student to:

keep this Logbook in a safe place and good condition obtain sign-offs from the Workplace Supervisor submit the completed Logbook to Open Colleges via OpenSpace.

Submitting the LogbookOnce all tasks and activities outlined in this Logbook have been completed for each section, the student should submit the completed Logbook section by:

1) Uploading a scanned copy of the completed Logbook through the Workplace Assessment Logbook upload link in OpenSpace; OR

2) Faxing a copy of the completed Logbook to the Open Colleges Student Support Team on (02) 9433 3666; OR

3 Posting a copy of the completed Logbook to the Open Colleges Student Support Team at PO Box 1568, Strawberry Hills, NSW 2012.

It is important that the student retains a copy of the completed Logbook.

Section C. Work Placement Attendance Report

This report is only required for students that are completing a Work Placement with a Host Organisation. Students undertaking the Workplace Assessments with their current employer do not need to complete this report. A total of 80 hours must be completed by the student in the workplace.

Section D. Required Activities and Tasks

Instructions You need to complete the required tasks or activities outlined below and have these signed-off by your Workplace Supervisor. You will need to complete the identified tasks and activities on a number of occasions (in most cases, three times).

All tasks should be undertaken under the appropriate supervision of the Workplace Supervisor. It is recommended that you meet with your Workplace Supervisor each week to discuss and document your progress against these tasks and activities.

Indicative daily scheduleAn indicative daily schedule for your Work Placement (undertaken on a full-time basis) might be as follows:

Days 1–4 Familiarise yourself with the workplace. Introduce yourself to the members of the team. Participate in the organisation’s induction processes. Review the organisation’s policies, procedures and

guidelines:o Work, Health and Safety (WHS)o Infection control procedures o Privacy and confidentiality.

Review the organisation’s plans, goals and objectives. Familiarise yourself with the client or customer record

system. Review the position description for a Animal Care Attendant. Undertake a review of your workplace against WHS

requirements. Participate in an initial telephone interview with your

Workplace Assessor.

Days 4-10 Observe your Workplace Supervisor and where applicable, participate in:

o workplace communicationso feeding and watering animalso completing animal care hygiene routineso providing basic care of dogso assisting in health care of animalso providing basic first aid for animalso providing reception services o providing information on companion animals, products

and serviceso sourcing information for animal care needs.

Days 10-12 Review your Logbook to ensure you have covered all tasks. Review your Workplace Assessment Portfolio activities. Complete any remaining tasks and activities. Ensure you have completed a total of 80 workplace hours. Undertake a review of your performance in the workplace. Discuss your review with your Workplace Supervisor. Ensure that your Workplace Supervisor has signed and

dated your Attendance Report if required and the Logbook. Participate in a final telephone interview with your Workplace

Assessor.
