HONORING ANN MARA, FRANK GIFFORD

This season, the Giants are honoring two of their legends who passed away this year by wearing a com-memorative patch and decal on their uniforms.

Ann Mara, who died on Feb. 1 at age 85 and she was the matriarch of the Giants organization, is being honored with a jersey patch. Gifford, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977 and died on Aug. 9 at age 84, is being honored by the team with a No. 16 decal -- Gifford’s jersey number -- on the back of their helmets.

GIANTS CELEBRATE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF SUPER BOWL XXV The Giants are celebrating the 25th anniversary of one of their most successful and memorable teams in franchise history, the 1990 squad that won Super Bowl XXV. In 1990, the Giants won their first 10 games and finished the regular season with a 13-3 record. They routed the Chicago Bears in an NFC Divisional Playoff Game, 31-3. The following week, Matt Bahr’s 42-yard field goal as time expired gave the Giants a 15-13 victory over the two-time defending champion 49ers in San Francisco in the conference champion-ship game. The Giants won their second title in five seasons when they defeated the Buffalo Bills, 20-19, in the Super Bowl. The 1990 Giants featured two current members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, head coach Bill Parcells and linebacker Lawrence Taylor. Quarterback Phil Simms started the first 14 games before he suffered a foot injury and was relieved by Jeff Hostetler. The team also included running back Ottis Anderson, the Super Bowl MVP, plus Carl Banks, Pepper Johnson and Leonard Marshall on defense.

Quotable on what ‘once a Giant, always a Giant’ means: “‘Once a Giant, always a Giant’ means to me that we’re always going to be celebrating and remembering those special moments that are going to be with us for the rest of our lives. You can’t deny history and it ’s really cool, very special to be able to have that in your history. ” Defensive Tackle erik HowarD

Quotable on coach bill Parcells’ PhilosoPhy for the 1990 season: “Parcells is ‘win with defense and don’t lose the game for me offense.’ That was the philosophy and it worked.” cenTer BarT oaTes

TOM COUGHLINNFL Record: 179-150 (Overall)NFL Head Coach: 20th year

Tom Coughlin is one of the finest, most successful, and most admired coaches in NFL history.

His signature achievements are the Giants’ victories against the New England Patriots in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI. Coughlin’s 2-0 record in Super Bowls makes him the 13th head coach to win multiple Super Bowls and is one of 18 coaches with a perfect Super Bowl record.

Coughlin was named the 16th head coach in Giants history on January 6, 2004. This season marks Coughlin’s 12th with the Giants and 20th as an NFL head coach. Coughlin has the NFL’s third-longest head coaching tenure with one team, behind New England’s Bill Belichick (entering his 15th season with the team) and Cincinnati’s Marvin Lewis (entering his 12th).

In his 20 years at the helm of an NFL team, Coughlin holds an overall career record of 179-150. (12 years with the Gi-ants & 8 years with the Jaguars) In his 12 years with New York, Coughlin has a 99-83 record with the team. In the postseason Coughlin has produced a 12-7 record (.632), including victories in Super Bowl XLII & XLVI.

Last year, Coughlin passed Mike Holmgren (161 career victories) and Jeff Fisher (162 career victories) to move into 13th place on the NFL’s career coaching list. He has 166 victories and needs five victories to crack the top 10.

Coughlin’s eight Giants postseason victories tie him with Parcells for the franchise record. Coughlin has led the Gi-ants to two NFC East titles and five playoff berths in nine years.

Jason Garrett was named the eighth head coach in Dallas Cowboys history on January 5, 2011 and became the first former Cowboys player to become the team’s head coach. He was named the club’s interim head coach at the mid-point of the 2010 season and went on to guide a Dallas team that had started the season with a 1-7 record to a 5-3 mark down the stretch. Since the 2007 season Garrett had been the Cowboys offensive coordinator, and in 2008, he was assigned the additional duties of being the club’s assistant head coach.

under Garrett, the Dallas offense finished among the NFL’s top-10 six times: 2014 (7th), 2013 (10th), 2012 (6th), 2010 (10th), 2009 (2nd) and 2007 (2nd). In 2014 he oversaw a team that finished 12-4 and won the NFC East, his first division championship as head coach, and won a Wild Card playoff game. En route to winning the 2009 NFC Eastern Division title, Dallas established club records for total of-fensive yards (6,390), net passing yards (4,287) and pass completions (347). Dallas won the NFC East in 2007 with a team-record tying 13 victories and finished second in the NFL in scoring. Garrett was named Pro Football Weekly’s NFL’s Assistant Coach of the Year in March of 2008. Garrett has a career record of 42-32.

Prior to joining the Cowboys, Garrett played quarterback at Princeton (1987-88) and was named the Ivy League’s Player of the Year and honorable mention All-American as a senior. He played professionally in the World League and Canadian Football League (both 1991) before joining Dal-las (1992-99), Giants (2000-03), Buccaneers (2004) and Dolphins (also 2004). Garrett was a key reserve on three Super Bowl teams with Dallas and one with the Giants. He began his coaching career as quarterbacks’ coach with Nick Saban’s Dolphins from 2005-2006.

FAST FIVE: ERECK FLOWERS

1What’s been the biggest adjustment you’ve made from college to the NFL?The biggest adjustment has probably been the speed of

the game. In college the playing speed wasn’t as fast.

2 Who was your favortire athlete growing up?My favorite athelte growing up was Allen Iverson. He meant so much to basketball and had a tremendous

impact on and off the court.

3 What’s your favorite gym shoe? My favorite gym shoe of all-time would have to be the Michael Jordan number 12’s.

4 What’s one thing you want to improve on the most in your game?I want to continuously improve on my techi-

nique. I think it’s important if you want longevity in this league.

5 What’s your favorite meal?My favorite meal is homemade shrimp alfredo.

AT&T STADIUM

For the fifth year in row, the Giants dropped their opening game, as they fell to the Dallas Cowboys in AT&T Stadium, 27-26. Tight end Jason Witten scored the game-winning touchdown on an 11-yard pass from Tony Romo with only 7 seconds remaining in the game.

The score was Witten’s second in the final 5:08, as the Giants were unable to hold onto a 10-point fourth-quarter lead and lost their fifth consecutive game to the Cowboys.

Romo completed 36 of 45 passes for 356 yards, 3 touchdowns, and was not sacked. The Giants gained just 289 yards owned the ball for only 22:50. Eli Manning completed 20 of 36 passes for 193 yards, with no touchdowns nor interceptions.

The visitors scored on cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie’s 57-yard fumble return, Rashad Jennings’ 1-yard touchdown run, and 4 Josh Brown field goals (from 50, 40, 30 and 19 yards).

The Giants led in the fourth quarter, 23-13, when the game began turning away. Romo led the Cowboys on a 6-play, 76-yard drive that included fur completed passes of at least 15 yards, plus the 1-yards score to Witten. On the next series, the Giants drove to Dallas’ 4-yard line. But they had to settle for a short field goal and a 6-point lead.

With no timeouts, the Cowboys quickly traveled 72 yards in 6 plays. Despite difficult handling the snap, Romo found Witten at the goal line for the winning score.

NEXT UPWEEK 8 . at SAINTS
