If you’ve had a busy year and aren’t sure how you’ll survive the festive season, then this issue of Go magazine can help you! Packed with articles on the latest health news you will be sailing through the ‘crazy’ months, feeling good and looking great. After all it’s easier to be well rather than sick! And we are delighted to hear that the new Chief Executive, Carl Gibson, of the Complementary Healthcare Council of Australia feels this way too! Mr Gibson is keen to encourage government to invest in a healthy Australia. Speaking at the recentGo Vita Members’ Conference in Alice Springs, he said,“We need a new approach to healthcare, one that promotes, encourages and invests in wellness – rather than propping up an ailing illness model. Complementary medicines hold a vital position in empowering Australians to take responsibility for their health, and in assisting the shift of health policy focus from a disease model to one of wellness.” The CHC will be asking the Government to commit just one per cent of National Health and Medical Research Council project funds to complementary medicine research priorities for 2014-2018. Go Vita looks forward to following the CHC’s progress with the new government in creating more sustainable health outcomes for all Australians.

Don’t forget we have 50 Summer Health & Vitality prize packs (valued at over $400 each) to give away, simply like us at www.facebook.com/GoVitaAustralia and keep sharing the competition for your chance to win!

With thanks for your continual support and best wishes for a healthy, fun and safe holiday season.

six steps to a sizzling summer body

1 Cleanse winter waste Banishing body baggage and

blockages is the fi rst step to attaining your ideal weight. Out with trapped toxins, in with new nutrients. Commit to a pure diet. No alcohol, sugar, refi ned grains, cow’s milk, yellow cheese, ice cream, vegetable oil, fatty meats or deep fried foods. Favour egg white omelettes with green vegetables, fi lling superfood spirulina smoothies, omega 3 rich fi sh, seeds, fruit and vegetables. Large, late dinners simply store fat. Instead have a lush lunch, an afternoon vegetable carrot, celery, ginger juice and an evening soup. To pacify hunger keep healthy food on hand, munching on vegetable sticks with wholesome dip. Expel fat and toxins with time tested liver herbs milk thistle and globe artichoke. Wash your insides with alkaline water as celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels does. Comprising of over 75 per cent water we need at least a litre a day to keep acidity, headaches, fatigue, cellulite, constipation, dry skin, stones, acne and UTIs away. “The pH Miracle for Weight Loss” author, Dr Robert Young, also attributes acid to

excess fat. He explains, “To keep acids from poisoning and killing us, our bodies bind them up with a fat buffer for protection.” Biochemist Tyler LeBaron of the University of Boise, Idaho, has shown high hydrogen water has profound effects on toxicity, infl ammation and weight loss. An alkalising water purifi er such as Alkaway UltraStream treats tissues to this fountain of youth by enriching water with alkaline minerals and infusing molecular bioavailable hydrogen as it fi lters your tap water of contaminants.

2Auto-exercise “Make exercise an everyday

automatic routine like brushing your teeth”, advises Gwyneth Paltrow. Get slim, supple and strong with fun fi tness. No distractions, no excuses, just do it! Set your weekly exercise schedule and stick to it. Ensure there’s a good mix of 30 minutes daily cardio, stretching and strengthening. Sweat with a smile while you power walk through nature, mini tramp, zumba, yoga, cycle or swim. Make movement part of your day by walking to work, taking stairs and getting into housework with gusto.

3Enhance energy When we’re tired or emotionally

empty we often eat for energy. However if we suffer acidity, malabsorption, candida or a poor diet, food only feeds fatigue. Fix digestive disorders with a nutritious, low allergy diet and digestive aids such as probiotics and digestive enzymes. Increase energy to increase metabolism, burn fat, preserve muscle mass, regulate blood sugar and decrease hunger. Supplements supplying power include alpha lipoic acid and coenzyme Q10 which are antioxidants, anti-infl ammatory and metabolise food into energy. Chromium, vitamin B complex and Gymnema sylvestre lower blood sugar and cravings to ensure less fat storage. Ginseng also lowers blood sugar while sparking energy. Address emotional eating issues by asking “What am I really hungry for? How can I feed my deeper need?”

4 Luminous skin Silky, clear skin can outshine any

perceived physical fl aws. Korean women famous for their soft skin scrub with natural bristle brushes. This buffs away dry skin, disperses cellulite while stimulating collagen and circulation to promote ageless skin. Regular self-massage with an aromatherapy blend smoothes and softens skin. Try this effective spider vein and cellulite remedy daily. To 200ml coconut oil add 5 drops each of birch, cedarwood, cypress, fennel, grapefruit, juniper, lemon, rosemary and sage essential oils. Apply warm and massage towards the heart using fi rm strokes dissolving fatty deposits. To fade freckles and sunspots simply crush a vitamin B3 tablet, add it to a teaspoon of rosehip oil and apply to the area for ten minutes twice daily.

Shift negative body beliefs by countering them with positive phrases. Next to your list of pet peeves put down your desire such as beside “I’m fat” write “I grow more glowing every day.” Repeat empowering affi rmations daily with conviction. In a relaxed state smile and see yourself at your physical peak, doing what you love. Compile a vision board of inspiring images on paper or online at pinterset.com. Once upon a time, the human heart would keep beating until it simply wore out from old age.

Nowadays, having a healthy heart is less about age and more about lifestyle. Learnhow to reduce your risk of heart disease andlive a healthier, happier life.

kick startyour heart

Go magazine spoke to naturopath Emma Sutherland about her recommendations for a healthy heart. Emma says “By far the most remarkable natural supplement for heart health would have to be aged garlic extract”. She explains that “The latest research, all done here in Australia by Dr Karin Ried of the University of Adelaide, has shown that taking two capsules of aged garlic extract daily can lower blood pressure in those with uncontrolled hypertension to the same degree as commonly prescribed pharmaceutical drugs. What’s great too is that aged garlic extract is safe to take in conjunction with other heart medications. More recent research has also suggested aged garlic extract may be effective in lowering cholesterol, so if you are going to take a supplement for your heart, you should certainly consider an aged garlic extract.”

A 20 month ageing process is required to produce the aged garlic extract. This process is essentially the difference between raw garlic and the aged garlic extract. The ageing process not only eliminates the harsh sulphur-containing compounds that can cause gut irritation and heartburn but it also ensures the extract is odourless – so you don’t need to worry about garlic breath! The process also creates a new compound (S-allylcysteine), the active ingredient responsible for the blood pressure lowering action in aged garlic extract.

The perfect partner for aged garlic extract is coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). It’s an

antioxidant and assists in the maintenance of a healthy cardiovascular system. CoQ10 is also helpful for those taking cholesterol lowering drugs (or statins) as these drugs can reduce natural levels of CoQ10 in the body causing side effects such as fatigue and muscle weakness and cramps and cognitive impairment.

Stressed out = increasedheart disease riskStatistically, heart attacks tend to be related to stress and high blood pressure. Researchers from UCLA medical centre identifi ed fi re fi ghters as being two to four times more vulnerable for heart attack or other cardiac events due to their high stress levels. A group of at-risk fi re fi ghters were selected for a 12 month trial of aged garlic extract to determine its benefi ts to heart health. The trial concluded that multiple risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease were reduced through the use of aged garlic extract when taken in conjunction with CoQ10. They als o reported that this supplement combination reduced levels of bad cholesterol and elevated levels of the protective good cholesterol.

The importance of exerciseNaturopath Lisa Costa Bir recommends in addition to natural supplements you exercise regularly for optimum heart health, “As regular exercise has been shown to increase good HDL cholesterol and reduce triglycerides, particularly in sedentary and overweight people.”

Is living in the fast-paced 21st century stressing you out? Leading Sydney-based natural health practitioner Giselle Cooke reveals effective ways

to reduce stress and improve your quality of life.

Australia may well be the ‘Lucky Country’, but this doesn’t mean we’re immune to the pressures of busy, modern lifestyles. Juggling a demanding job alongside family responsibilities, living next to noisy neighbours, commuting in slow-moving traffi c, working with diffi cult colleagues or being socially isolated can cause many of us to feel frustrated, overwhelmed or powerless to change our lives. Combine this with emails and smartphones that result in round-the-clock availability, and it’s no wonder some of us are unable to switch off and completely relax. Not allowing the mind and body to fully unwind means the many physical symptoms of stress – high blood pressure, muscle tension, disrupted sleep, frequent headaches, dry skin – never dissipate. Instead, they compound into chronic stress, which can compromise your immunity and end up causing illness.

Physiological responseWhen we get stressed or feel threatened, the body pumps large amounts of adrenaline and cortisol into the bloodstream. These hormones make the heart beat faster and raise blood pressure in readiness for a ‘fi ght-or-fl ight response’, a survival mechanism from earlier times when our ancestors faced real, physical dangers like a charging wild animal. These days, stressful situations

rarely involve physical danger, so the increased hormones are not used up in any physical response. Since adrenaline and cortisol interferes with digestion, metabolism, hormone balance and healing mechanisms, it’s no wonder stress has far-reaching negative effects on our emotional and physical health.

But sometimes people don’t realise they’re under stress. The workaholic is a classic example of an individual who is in denial of the physical warning signs and continues to push through regardless. He or she may be waking up fatigued, feel constantly weary, have diffi culty concentrating, eat a poor diet, continually over-commit their schedule and become dependent on coffee, alcohol or smoking to sustain performance. They may also become short-tempered, fearful, forgetful, impatient and manipulative.

Managing stressThe role of drugs in managing stress should be confi ned to crisis management, short-term stabilisation and symptom control only, in my opinion. The longer a drug is consumed, particularly for anxiety and depression, the greater the likelihood of developing signifi cant side effects. To minimise this risk, try to manage mild to moderate stress with natural solutions fi rst.

Olive leaf extract helps combat risk factors in stressed out men!

A study by TheUniversity of Auckland’sLiggins Institute foundsupplementing with olive leafextract over a 12-weekperiod helped to improveglucose regulation in overweight, middle-aged men. The researchers concluded that olive leaf extract appreciably reduces the risk factors in stressed out, overweight men who might otherwise be on a fast track to developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Giselle Cooke is a medically-trained holistic health consultant, with over 30 years’ experience, who specialises in designing optimal wellness programs for her clients, from babies to the elderly. Her integrative approach to managing chronic and complex health conditions is unique and highly effective, utilising nutritional, herbal, traditional Chinese and environmental medicine therapies to address root causes of disease for true recovery.

Startling statistics According to a report commissioned in 2012 by the Australian Psychological Society (APS), younger adults, students and the unemployed reported signifi cantly higher levels of anxiety and depression compared to older, working or retired Australians. Nearly half of all respondents identifi ed personal fi nances as a cause of stress. Surprisingly, 40 per cent said trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle was a source of stress.

nutritional supplement, which includes high levels of B-vitamins, in particular a blend of nicotinamide and nicotinic acid (B3), as well as calcium pantothenate (B5) and pyridoxine hydrochloride (B6) that are required for cortisol metabolism.

Helpful therapies: A number of alternative therapies have been proven to help reduce stress levels. Acupuncture and shiatsu provide relief from tension, anxiety and depression and help to support your body’s recovery from stress. Therapeutic massage alleviates muscle tension, reduces aches and pains, and improves circulation. Yoga is considered one of the best mind, body and spirit stress antidote activities, while meditation has been extensively researched and found to impressively manage stress-related conditions. In fact, many therapists consider meditation a core component of stress-management protocol.

Lifestyle solutions: To reset your nervous system and balance out your stress hormones, try to include some relaxing ‘downtime’ into your day every day. Watch a movie, listen to soothing music or spend quality time with friends and family. Find a green space outdoors to do some exercise or simply just breathe! Exercise has a range of health benefi ts, including reducing muscle tension, promoting good-quality sleep, improving libido, circulation, cellular regeneration, nutritional uptake, digestion and elimination, as well as reducing the risk of developing diabetes, obesity, dementia, and cancer.

Prioritise getting a good night’s sleep every night. Make an effort to create harmonious work and home environments. Adjust your expectations, focus on the positives and let go of things that don’t really matter.

Turmeric and curcuminoidsTurmeric is a relative of the ginger plant and contains active components called curcuminoids which make up about 2-5 per cent of the yellow spice. For centuries turmeric has been used in Indian and Asian culture for its medicinal properties and as a culinary spice. Research is mounting to demonstrate curcumin’s power as an antioxidant and anti-infl ammatory. Curcumin’s anti-infl ammatory properties are multi-faceted and it works on various levels to reduce infl ammation. In addition research into the health benefi ts of curcumin reaches far beyond arthritis into areas such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Crohn’s disease, Alzheimers and a number of other degenerative conditions.

As an antioxidant, studies have shown curcumin to be at least 10 times more active than vitamin E. Curcumin prevents the oxidation of haemoglobin (red blood component) and inhibits lipid peroxidation.

For arthritis sufferers, a clinical study conducted by Deakin University in 2009, involved osteoarthritis patients receiving 1200mg curcumin for 14 days and recorded positive results with up to 50 per cent less

pain experienced and increased mobility. Similar results were found in a clinical study involving rheumatoid arthritis patients concurrently on non-sterodial anti-infl ammatory drug (NSAID) therapy. Studies have shown curcumin can be tolerated up to 8g/day without side effects.

Stay tuned as we believe there is much more to be learnt about this colourful and healthful yellow spice!

Green lipped mussel extractAnother product with exciting prospects is green lipped mussel extract (GLME) sourced from the unpolluted coastal waters of New Zealand. Green lipped mussel is rich in omega 3 fatty acids and is a natural source of glucosamine and chondroitin; both are natural components of cartilage and are used by the body to build cartilage. Although research is continuing on this product, studies have shown that GLME has the capacity to inhibit the degradation of cartilage by stimulating the way cartilage is synthesised in the body and assists to restore articular function. GLME has anti-infl ammatory properties with research showing positive outcomes in the

treatment of asthma, as well as assisting in management of joint pain. In fact it is comparable to NSAIDs in terms of its actions but without the side effects or risks.

Interesting evidence shows that Maoris who live in coastal areas of New Zealand and have long consumed large amounts of mussels report extremely low incidences of arthritis, compared to those living in the interior whom have the same incidence of arthritis as European New Zealanders.

If you suffer from painful joints, consider the health benefi ts of these natural alternatives in parallel with your current treatment and in consultation with your healthcare professional.

Mighty mineralsMuscle tissue requires a range of minerals for contraction and relaxation including calcium, potassium, magnesium and sodium. After exercising, these minerals can become depleted, particularly after intense exercise where it is not unusual to fi nish with a fl uid defi cit. Situations like this require a focused effort on rehydration as defi ciency has been shown to affect performance. For example, defi ciency of the mineral magnesium is associated with muscle weakness and structural

damage of muscle fi bres, which in turnmay reduce your capacity to exercise.

On the fl ip side, consumption of magnesium is associated with increased muscle strength in people exercising and faster recovery. This is believed to be due to the important role of magnesium in energy metabolism as well as muscle contraction and relaxation. Where possible isotonic electrolyte formulas containing magnesium should be chosen as they have the same osmolarity as the body’s own fl uids which allows them to rehydrate and refuel the body quickly.

Amazing aminosStrenuous exercise can result in muscle protein being broken down, which can cause muscle stiffness and fatigue. Research from Newcastle University by Professors Roberts and Dunstan has shown that this catabolic process can be minimised by consuming amino acids (both essential and non-essential)

which are known to be the building blocks of protein and muscle tissue. Consumption of amino acids is associated with muscle repair, growth and mass, thus minimising muscle damage after exercising. For best results amino acids should be consumed during exercise or immediately after as this extends the length of time before muscle breakdown occurs, reduces fatigue and improves performance and recovery. White sugar vs xylitol and steviaRefi ned white sugar is a typical way to add sweetness to beverages and baked goods, but it also has the effect of causing sudden energy highs and lows, as well as contributing to weight gain and unstable blood sugar levels. An alternative is xylitol, which is extracted from corn cobs and birch trees. With no calories and a low-glycemic index (GI) value, it is ideal as part of a balanced weight-loss program. A range of products based on xylitol including brownie bake mix and chewing gum is available at Go Vita. Another good option is stevia, a naturally sweet herb that is also low in GI and free of calories.

Vegetable oil vs coconut and cold-pressed olive oilsIt may be inexpensive, but vegetable oil contains large amounts of cholesterol-boosting saturated fats. Coconut oil is cholesterol-free and contains lauric acid, a healthy, medium-chain fatty acid that supports the body’s metabolism. As well as cooking with it, use it to moisturise dry, chapped skin. Cold-pressed extra virgin olive is another great alternative to vegetable oil. It contains benefi cial antioxidants that promote cardiovascular health. Drizzle some olive oil over crusty bread instead of using butter or margarine. Other great oils to cook with include macadamia oil, rice bran oil, avocado oil and grapeseed oil.

Supermarket dressings vs fl axseed oilStore-bought salad dressings are tasty and convenient, but can be high in sodium, preservatives and sugar. Try drizzling your salad with organic, cold-pressed fl axseed oil instead. An excellent source of healthy omega 3 essential fatty acids, this oil promotes heart health and has natural anti-infl ammatory properties. It also has a lovely nutty taste, but do not cook with it.

Table salt vs Himalayan salt and wakame seaweed Salt has many health benefi ts, including regulating the body’s water content and preventing muscle cramps. However, consuming too much of it can cause health problems like high blood pressure. Commercial table salt has been chemically processed, stripping it of important trace minerals. A healthier option is Himalayan sea salt, which includes 84 essential trace elements and minerals. If you want to add fl avour without using salt, try wakame seaweed. Reap the benefi ts of its high-nutrient profi le by sprinkling it in soups and stews and pasta dishes.

Margarine vs omega table spreadsMargarine is made from unstable hydrogenated or refi ned plant oils and has a very high fat content. A good alternative is Melrose Omega Care table spreads. Made from a combination of sunfl ower and fl axseed oils, these spreads contain healthy omega-3 fatty acids, are extremely low in saturated fats and don’t have any cholesterol. They’re great for making sandwiches but do not use for cooking.

Is your hair falling out, getting thinner, or losing condition? Standing

by as your crowning glory becomes a shadow of its former self can be extremely confronting – after all, many of us consider our hair a core part of our identities. So why does this happen? And what can you do about it? Jayne Tancred investigates.

Losing up to 100 hairs from your scalp every day is normal and nothing to worry about. It happens because your hair continually progresses through a cycle that takes several years to complete, with each of the thousands of strands on your head being at its own phase of the cycle.

The hairs that fall out are from follicles in the resting phase of the cycle, called the telogen phase, during which there is no blood supply to the hair follicle. Without the nourishing blood supply, a strand of hair is no longer ‘attached’ to the head, and either falls out by itself or is pushed out once a new hair starts to form beneath it.

This signals the start of the anagen (growth) phase of the hair growth cycle, in which blood supply is restored and hair growth continues for the next 2-7 years,

usually at the rate of about a centimetre per month.

Then, before moving back into its resting phase, the hair follicle undergoes a short transitional phase called the catagen phase, during which the blood supply to the hair follicle is lost. This removes the access to nourishment, and changes it from being a ‘living’ hair to a ‘dead’ one (called a club hair), moving it back into the telogen (resting) phase again. The resting phase lasts a few months, after which another hair growth cycle begins.

However, sometimes the hair follicle becomes withered due to age or other factors (which may include stress, age-related hormonal changes and general poor health), and the emerging strand of hair becomes progressively fi ner, shorter and thinner until eventually the follicle ceases to produce new hair at all.

Chinese herbs for healthy hairFrom the perspective of Chinese medicine, the growth and development of the hair depends on the health of the Kidney and Liver organ-meridian systems, with Kidney energy (called Jing) governing the growth of the hair, and Liver Blood providing nourishment to the scalp and hair follicles.

According to this philosophy, defi ciency of either Jing or Liver Blood may have detrimental effects on the hair, leading to conditions such as dryness, brittleness, premature greying, and alopecia or hair loss including spot baldness, general

thinning, male and female pattern baldness (sometimes called androgenic alopecia) and hair loss of unknown causes.

In many instances traditional Chinese herbal hair tonics work by nourishing the Liver Blood and replenishing Kidney Jing to activate the circulation, improve blood fl ow to the scalp and revitalise the hair follicles to promote normal healthy hair growth, colour and condition.

One example is Phytofol®, a proprietary extract of the Chinese herb Fallopia multifl ora that’s been developed by Australian company Fusion® Health. In traditional Chinese medicine, this herb is used to nourish the Liver Blood and replenish Kidney energy (Jing) to promote healthy hair follicle function.

Phytofol® may help regenerate resting hair follicles to increase the percentage of normal healthy hair follicles in the anagen (growth) phase of the hair growth cycle. In turn, this promotes healthy hair growth and condition including strength, volume, colour and lustre, and may assist in the management of alopecia, hair loss, and both male and female pattern baldness.

Phytofol® combines well with other herbs traditionally used in Chinese medicine to nourish and invigorate Blood, and strengthen Kidney Jing to revitalise hair follicles and promote healthy hair, including white peony, dong quai, ligusticum, rehmannia, cuscuta and psoralea. Together, this combination of herbs may assist in the management

why does hair fall out?

Fifteen-year-old Willow’s stunning long blonde hair is testament to the extraordinary power of Chinese herbs.

At age 10, Willow was devastated when all her hair fell out over a period of a couple of weeks. She was suffering from extreme forms of hair loss called alopecia totalis (which involves complete hair loss from the scalp) and alopecia universalis (rapid loss of all body

hair, including the eyebrows and eyelashes), and was advised by her dermatologist that she’d almost certainly be bald forever.

Willow’s desperate mum tried everything to help her daughter, who was feeling stigmatised, self-conscious and isolated.

After a couple of years without success, a naturopath recommended they try using traditional Chinese herbs to nourish and

invigorate the Blood, so that in turn, the Blood could better nourish the hair follicles.

Just two weeks later, they couldn’t believe their eyes when they started seeing signs of new hair growth.

Now, three years on, Willow continues to take her Chinese herbs, and her hair is long and glossy. “She calls it her best feature”, says her relieved mum.

of alopecia (hair loss), spot baldness, thinning hair, and both male- and female-pattern baldness, and help inhibit premature greying and declining hair condition (weak, brittle, dry, dull, split ends).

Silica supports hair structureThe mineral silica is found in all tissues that require structure and strength, including not just the hair, but also collagen-containing connective tissues such as the skin and nails.

As an essential component of collagen, silica helps stabilise connective tissue and enhance elasticity and fi rmness of the scalp to support the hair follicles. It also supports hair condition and strength, and may be benefi cial for brittle hair and split ends. High doses of

silica are often combined with other essential vitamins and minerals, sometimes along with Phytofol®. Together, these ingredients help nourish hair follicles to support healthy hair growth and condition including strength, volume, colour and lustre. They also nourish the skin to encourage healthy skin texture, tone, fi rmness and elasticity, aid the management of skin conditions such as mild to moderate acne, dermatitis and psoriasis, and reduce nail breakage, splitting and fl aking, and help strengthen soft or brittle nails. The reason for minerals high importance is essentially because they are required by every cell in our body to function optimally. Dr Pauling said, “If minerals are lacking in your food, vitamins a re of no use because vitamins (and enzymes) need minerals for them to work in your bodies. This means that vitamin supplements would be of no use unless you also have adequate minerals”.

What do minerals do?Minerals are the basic constituents of all matter on earth – including us! They play many vital roles in your body, including: Structural roles: Minerals are involved in the formation

of blood and bones, the composition of body fl uids, the maintenance of nerve functions and the regulation of skeletal and cardiovascular muscle.

Enzyme activation: Minerals facilitate the functions of enzymes and the utilisation of vitamins and other nutrients.

Hormones: Trace minerals form an essential part of hormone structures and help regulate the endocrine system.

Minerals form part of physiologically important substances: For example, iron forms part of haemoglobin, and cobalt is a component of vitamin B12.

Fluid balance: Fluid balance requires an appropriate ratio of the minerals sodium and potassium.

Electrical activity: The electrolytes are minerals involved in the electrical activity of the muscle and nerve cells.

Acid-alkaline balance: Minerals maintain and regulate the acidity and alkalinity (pH) of the tissues and blood.

DNA production: Minerals are involved in the synthesis of DNA, enabling old cells to be replaced with new ones. With minerals playing such a vast number of roles in the body,

it stands to reason that inadequate intake of even one or two minerals could have signifi cant consequences for your health.

What are colloidal mineralsThere are many ways to take individual minerals you may require but when it comes to ensuring you receive a broad spectrum of all minerals, many people turn to LifeSPRINGS™ Minerals 75 – an easily-absorbed liquid containing 75 natural plant-derived minerals. The minerals are extracted from plants grown in enriched soils with pure, clean water. The minerals are absorbed from the soil via the plants’ roots and then converted into plant-derived minerals. Free from preservatives, synthetic substances or fl avourings this is an ideal way to consume your daily minerals. And it is these plant-derived colloidal minerals that activate the vitamins. Without the right quantity and balance of plant derived colloidal minerals, vitamins cannot carry out their work.

Don’t we get enough in our food? While it seems appropriate to aim to get all the minerals you need from your daily diet, it has been shown that due to continuous farming in the same soil, and pesticides, the food we eat today contains very little minerals. Tests reported at the World Health Summit in Rio De Janeiro in 1993 showed that Australian farm soil was depleted by 55 per cent compared to the level of mineral salts contained in the past 100 years. This fact alone can lead to increases of heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, depression, fatigue, migraines, and skin and hair problems.

there are limited resources for growing food, so it is much more convenient to boost nutrient levels by taking a supplement. Also, many conventional foods are now hybrid versions of the original heirloom variety, with seeds being selectively bred to grow better in monoculture environments. Unfortunately, one of the side effects of this practice is a loss of nutrients. We are also exposed to higher levels of toxins and radiation than our forebearers, so need to consume foods that contain high levels of antioxidants to fi ght free-radical damage and help prevent disease.

What are raw suppplements? Raw supplements are concentrated wholefoods that are minimally processed in order to maintain their original qualities. They contain a full array of living ingredients, including sea minerals, chlorophyll and pre-probiotics, that are needed for optimal health. An important reason for choosing raw, wholefood supplements is that their phytonutrients remain intact. Phytonutrients are plant nutrients that help fi ght disease. When these are heavily processed or heat-treated, many of their benefi cial properties become damaged. Raw supplements also contain living enzymes that help to break down food and assimilate nutrients. If enzymes are not sourced from food, the body must use its own stores. This takes vital energy away from metabolic processes, leaving us feeling depleted.

Why supplement? In an ideal world, we would obtain all the essential nutrients our body requires from daily meals, but not everyone has the time or know-how to prepare nutritious, wholesome meals that include a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals. In

traditional agricultural societies, people frequently grew their own vegetables, herbs and spices, or had easy access to nutrient-dense foods such as seeds, berries, sprouts, grasses, roots and so on. These days, with more than 50 per cent of the world’s population living in cities,

Healthy benefi tsConsuming essential nutrients in their raw form via supplements has many health-promoting benefi ts. These include:

Reduced risk of disease: The range of nutrients in raw supplements encourages your body to build a stronger immune system, leaving you less prone to disease.

Increased energy and vitality: When you give your body the resources it needs, its systems work more effi ciently and therefore require less energy.

Slower ageing process: The antioxidant-rich phytonutrients in raw supplements helps fi ght off free-radical compounds that speed up ageing. This means you not only feel younger, but look younger, too.

Positive outlook: Many of the nutrients in raw supplements help to regulate mood and hormones. Aside from this, when you feel physically healthy, you inevitably feel more balanced mentally and emotionally.

arnica when lifegets rough Sports enthusiasts,

parents and anyone who routinely

experiences the rough and tumble of everyday life(which surely includes just about everyone?) could consider keeping some arnica in the fi rst aid box. Narelle Muller reports.

A well known remedy for bruising and tissue trauma, the herb arnica, a member of the sunfl ower family contains helenalin, a sesquiterpene lactone with powerful anti-infl ammatory properties.

When trauma occurs within the body its natural defence is to create infl ammation which, although painful, is part of the healing process. A typical pharmaceutical line of attack would be to use anti-infl ammatory medication to help deal with infl ammation and pain, possibly in conjunction with pain killing medication. While anti-infl ammatory medication has both pain killing response and reduces

infl ammation, medication for pain acts on the brain to deceive us into not feeling it, but actually does little to help with healing.

Arnica, on the other hand, is believed to assist the body in dealing with and eventually recovering from the trauma naturally. Records show arnica’s medical use dates back to the 1500s when it became favoured by European physicians who may have taken a lead from the peoples of the Americas, who had long administered the plant for treating painful sprains, sore muscles, joints and insect bites. Arnica helps to disperse trapped fl uid from joints and muscles, assisting with reduction of swelling, while the anti-infl ammatory and anti-bacterial qualities it possesses assist in the healing process.

It is believed 16th century mountain climbers chewed fresh arnica leaves as a preventative measure against potential aches and pains from bumps and falls.

In trials using rugby players and children to assess the effectiveness of remedies on bruises, an assortment of treatments were administered. Among the remedies were sports compresses, antioxidant injections,

painkillers, vitamins and arnica which was taken orally, as well as applied topically. Arnica proved to be among the most effective options in most cases. Applied topically it is said to have worked well on minimising bruising and swelling, while orally it also helped the patient cope with shock.

While it has been around a long time, arnica’s uses are still being unveiled and it is becoming increasingly popular as a post-surgical treatment. Used in everything from dental work to childbirth, arnica’s therapeutic properties are thought to be valuable in helping the body to cope with the trauma of surgery.

We all knowginger is oneof the culinary

greats, but the growing list of health benefi ts is equally remarkable. Narelle Muller explains.Whether eaten as a delicacy, enjoyed as a spice in cooking, or taken as medicine, ginger has been consumed for thousands of years. Cultivation is believed to have begun in South Asia, spreading to Africa and the Caribbean and now ginger is commonly used around the world.

Ginger is a member of the Zingiberaceae family of plants, which have distinguished themselves as food and medicines since antiquity.

While ancient people turned to ginger as a remedy for countless maladies, science is fi nally catching up and studies show the root may be of benefi t in the treatment of a wide range of conditions. Commonly called

upon as an antidote for motion sickness, ginger is also increasingly being prescribed for morning sickness as studies suggest it may be as effective as vitamin B6. It is also widely used for general gastric upset and may help prevent stomach ulcers. Considered a strong natural painkiller, ginger has anti-infl ammatory properties (thanks to the powerful gingerols it contains) and as a result is often used by arthritis sufferers to relieve pain. Also due to its natural palliative effect and antibiotic powers, it’s used in treating colds and fl u. Along with abilities to lower blood sugar, cholesterol and blood fats, it is used to treat a myriad of conditions including heartburn, gout and menstrual cramps.

Tests conducted in labs have shown promise that ginger taken before exposure to gamma radiation (in some X-rays) may reduce the harmful effects of the rays. It should be noted, however, administering ginger after exposure had no effect.

Australian family-owned company, The Ginger People, has been manufacturing ginger products for

almost three decades, including kid-friendly sweets used to naturally ease motion sickness and nausea; tonics for wellness and energy; organic pantry essentials, such as crystallised ginger, ginger syrup, minced ginger and pickled ginger for sushi.

The ginger tonics, made with fresh Peruvian ginger juice and pure honey, are considered an easy way to pep up energy or boost the immune system. Ginger Soother is a stomach calming elixir packed with antioxidants and a splash of lemon juice for added vitamin C. Drink it hot or cold, it’s great to relieve morning sickness, a cold or fl u, tummy troubles and even the dreaded hangovers! calcium and magnesium, and vitamins such as A, B1, B2, B6 and C, apple cider vinegar packs a health punch. It’s been used for thousands of years to help treat sore throats and colds, eliminate toxins in the body and reduce bad breath and body odour. Simply add a couple of teaspoons to a glass of water.

2 MolassesMolasses is a great

alternative to refi ned sugars, especially considering that it is

loaded with antioxidants and a serving of it helps you on your way to reaching your daily dietary requirements of magnesium, manganese, copper, iron and potassium. Blackstrap molasses is a thick, dark syrup left after the extraction of sugar from sugar cane. The roots of the sugar cane run a long

way into the soil, and hence provide the broad spectrum of minerals

already mentioned. Use it in the same way you use golden syrup or honey. Molasses can even be used in baking to replace refi ned sugars which

have been stripped of their natural goodness. Molasses

tends to be stronger in fl avour though (bitter-sweet some may call it!), so you won’t need to use as much.

1Nourish sunned-out locksCombating the elements in summer

to keep your hair glossy and bouncy can be quite a challenge. The combination of sun, humidity, chlorine and salt water can lead to dry, dull and frizzy strands, which can be hard to tame. Natural skincare company Weleda has recently launched a range of natural hair care products, free of SLS, parabens, preservatives and artifi cial essences, and they are NATRUE certifi ed, which guarantees they use natural ingredients and processes. All of the ingredients are mild and skin friendly to unleash the hair’s natural strength and beauty. Once a week use Weleda Oat Replenishing Treatment to intensely nourish your hair and scalp, protecting against the elements.

2Smooth and shapethat bod

Bearing (almost) all in summer makes smooth, supple skin your best accessory. Take the time to exercise every day to build muscle tone, combat cellulite and stimulate blood circulation. Dry body

brushing is another great way to boost lymphatic drainage, disperse toxins and move fatty deposits out of your system. Give your body a quick brush every day before you shower.

3Clear your complexionIn the humidity your skin will

naturally feel stickier, and can have a tendency to become oily. Be careful not to over-cleanse and strip your skin of its protective layer, which keeps it healthy and balanced. Change your cream-based cleanser to a lighter gel or foaming face wash, and watch the areas you moisturise. “You never have to moisturise your nose – there are enough oil glands there as is,” says dermatologist Dr Doris Day.

4Protect your skinThe number-one way to avoid sun damage is to always keep your skin

protected with a natural mineral sunscreen or a moisturiser with a built in SPF – even in winter. Exfoliate regularly to slough off dead skin cells, even skin tone and reduce discolouration.

5Keep hydratedDehydrated skin is very

common in summer, when it is hot

and steamy. Dehydration is characterised by a lack of moisture (or water) in your skin, and gives it a fi ne, crepe paper-like texture. Keep well hydrated from within by drinking at least eight glasses of alkalised water every day, and choose light, hydrating lotions to feed your skin. For a cool fi x, keep your moisturiser in the fridge, and apply while chilly to really refresh your complexion!

6Treat your feet with a DIY pedicure

Soak your feet for around 10 minutes in a warm footbath, and give them a good scrub using Mineral Energy natural sea salt and raw sugar Body Scrub to remove any dry, dead skin. Pat feet dry and massage a little almond oil into your cuticles to nourish them. Toenails should be kept neat and square shaped, and buffed to smooth any ridges

of ageing. Unlike most other oils, the fats found in non-hydrogenated (virgin) coconut oil are very stable and are particularly suitable for high heat cooking as they will not

turn rancid. Try using it to panfry meat, poultry or seafood.

9Dried cranberriesCranberry juice and

supplements have been helpful in treating urinary tract infections for years, but dried cranberriesare also great for your wellbeing and a tasty, convenient snack. The American National Institute of Health explains that cranberries can improve cholesterol, reduce the impact of free radicals in the body and are rich in micronutrients and fi bre. Additionally, dried cranberries are

low in fat and calories and high in vitamin C, making them great as a lunchbox snack!

10Seaweed Seaweed, otherwise known

as nori, has been used in Japan for centuries. Evidence presented in the

Journal of Applied Phycology reports that including dried

seaweed in your diet may help prevent gallstones, control cholesterol and is generally an excellent food to eat. Dried seaweed contains vitamin A and C, magnesium, selenium

and B-group vitamins and is also high in iron. It comes

in sheets for making sushior shredded for adding to salads

and stir-fries.

or roughness. Next, spoil yourself with a foot and calf massage with a light, summery body lotion. Now it’s time to polish! Start with a base coat, and then apply two coats of your favourite bright, fl irty shade. Coral and burnt orange colours look fantastic in summer and give off a cool, relaxed vibe. Finish with a topcoat – this will help

maintain your colour longer, and will bring added shine.

7 Buff and even out your skin tone

The best way to get glowing, radiant summer skin is by regularly exfoliating your entire body. This will get rid of dead skin cells and fl akiness, and promote a smoother, more even skin tone. Natural sea salt and sugar scrubs

are fantastic for rejuvenating the skin and improving circulation. Pay particular attention to rough patches found on your knees, elbows and ankles, and exfoliate once a week to keep your skin in tiptop condition.

8 Keep your make-up seamlessSummer is all about natural, fresh-faced

beauty. To achieve that fl awless fi nish, start by applying a primer. A primer preps your skin, and ensures your foundation will glide on smoothly. Next, use a mineral foundation or tinted moisturiser, and be sure to blend well. Keep your skin shine-free from day to evening with a dusting of translucent powder over your t-zone, and keep a powder compact handy for touch-ups.

9 Get bright eyedWarm weather brings lots of parties

and late nights, which can sometimes leave you looking a little worse for wear. As our

eye area does not contain any oil glands, it is one of the fi rst places to show signs of ageing such as bags, fi ne lines and puffi ness. Invest in a light refl ecting concealer, and apply gently with your ring fi nger to camoufl age any darkness or puffi ness. Use a narural eye cream at bedtime, which will feed your skin the nutrients it needs to keep smooth, youthful and line-free.

10 Fake a golden glowDon’t bake in the sun

for a healthy glow! Use a self-tanning lotion for subtle colour and a safe tan. To bring radiance to your complexion, swap your blush for a bronzer.

Bonus tip!A Sydney based company was fi rst in the world to make the connection between the

role of wax esters in the jojoba plant and human skin. In a collaborative effort with leading cosmetic chemists and universities in Australia and USA, the company for the fi rst time modelled the jojoba molecule to unlock the secrets of wax esters and skin health. Over four years, driven by increasing jojoba production from its own jojoba plantations in the Riverina region of NSW, The Jojoba Company of

Australia developed the world’s fi rst natural skin care range

with jojoba as the hero ingredient. They also incorporate natural and organic plant based ingredients from around the world. Products were built on the ability of jojoba

wax esters to protect skin against moisture loss,

smooth and protect, and to

deliver nutrients deep into skin. This is just what they do to keep wild jojoba plants green and vibrant in the relentless heat of the hottest and driest place on earth. Jojoba oil is fast becoming the most sought after beauty secret this summer!

Correction: May 2013 article Dental Diet Dilemmas. Thank you to two of our regular readers for alerting us to an error in our May 2013 issue and a small pull-out box with information on fl uoride. It was not clear in the information provided that while fl uoride can be found as a natural mineral, it can also be manufactured. The manufactured or synthetic fl uoride is the type that is added to toothpaste and added to our water supply. And it is this form that drives constant debate as to its safety or otherwise.

We love anything coconut at Go Vita, so are very excited about Niulife Coconut Syrup! Handmade from freshly harvested coconut blossom nectar, Niulife Coconut Syrup is nutritionally superior to agave, corn and maple syrups. It has a warm toffee fl avour which is delicious on pancakes, waffl es, and ice cream, in smoothies and hot drinks or as a glaze on veg and meat dishes. The Coconut Syrup is 100 per cent certifi ed organic and fairly traded and has a low GI which means it won’t spike your blood sugar levels. It also has high levels of inositol, the ‘feel good’ vitamin which fi ghts moody blues and helps maintain a positive outlook. If you are stuck for Christmas gift ideas, for the person who has everything, try making your own hamper with yummy products such as this!

In past years Go Vita has supported the Australian Koala Foundation (AKF), a non-profi t, non-government organisation dedicated to the conservation and management of the wild koala and its habitat. The AKF estimates that there are likely to be less than 80,000 koalas remaining in Australia today and it could be as low as 43, 000. Much of their habitat has already been lost. This makes it vitally important to save what is left. If you want to help go to www.savethekoala.com where you can adopt a koala (great gift idea for the person who has everything!) or browse the online shop.
