Meet the Team
Our team of trainers are specialists in their field. Each trainer is passionate about working with staff,
students and parent/carers to support the enhancement of students learning, social, emotional and
behavioural development. Below is a brief introduction to our lead trainers.
Sonia Townsend coordinated the Learning Mentors (LMs) and Learning Support Units (LSUs) across
a London local authority for over 10 years, supporting headteachers, senior managers and Learning
Mentors on effectively establishing and using LMs and LSUs in schools and colleges as well as the
identification and delivery of staff training. Sonia continues to support the development of Learning
Mentors and runs the termly Learning Mentor Induction Training, Learning Mentor Network Meetings
and refresher training for experienced Learning Mentors. Sonia also provides in school one to one and
group supervision to enhance and support staff in the effective delivery of their roles.
Duane Maddison has over 20 years’ experience of engaging children and young people through the
provision of one to one mentoring, personal development workshops, emotional literacy, creative
writing and performing arts. Duane has trained staff in schools, colleges and alternative education
provisions in areas such as conflict resolution, emotional Literacy, working with parents/carers, media
literacy, working with challenging behaviour and team building. Duane also works with parents/carers
in supporting their engagement with their child’s learning and the school community.
Delaunie St Lewis is a highly experienced teacher with over twenty five years in London Schools. She
is a former lead teacher and EAL advisor for London Challenge. She has written and delivered a range
of training programmes and her delivery style is facilitative and learner centred. Delaunie’s main
areas of expertise are teaching and learning/CPD, literacy and English as an Additional Language (EAL)
and New Arrivals.
Nnamdi Samuels is a fully qualified ‘integrative’ counsellor and psychotherapist, with experience of
working across all age groups. As a member of the British Association of Counsellors and
Psychotherapists (BACP) and with clinical experience spanning across 14 years Nnamdi has gained a
range of experiences, skills and strategies that both complement and enhance his practice. Nnamdi is
passionate about supporting staff, students, parent/carers and the wider communities through social
emotional development, cultural awareness, diversity and personal development workshops.
Michael Beckford uses a client centred approach to build effective working relationships with young
people, parent/carers and professional. With an early intervention youth advisor background Michael
provides 1:1 mentoring for young people while supporting the parent /carer with strategies to support
and engage young people in education, training and employment opportunities and reduce risky
behaviour.
Fay Maul brings over 15 years’ experience as a Learning Mentor, supporting the needs and
aspirations of students and engaging & motivating the participation of parents with their
children’s learning. Fay has supported staff to also recognise their potential and focus on
developing themselves and their practice through supportive coaching.

Learning Mentor Induction & Training - (Six Days) 9:30 – 4:30 pm
Course Aims & Target Audience:
This course will enable those working as or aspiring to become a Learning Mentor, such as Teaching Assistants to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to carry out the mentoring role.
Course Overview:
The Learning Mentor Induction & Training follows the updated Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) materials. The programme provides training for those working with children and young people in roles such as Mentoring, Attendance Officers and Parent Support Workers who wish to gain the necessary skills and knowledge to work as a Learning Mentor. The modules reflect current legislation and policy such as Promoting fundamental British values as part of SMSC in schools.
Course Content:
Facilitating children & young people’s development through mentoring – values, beliefs &
behaviours and a structured approach to Learning Mentoring. The extended role of the Learning Mentor – supporting transfers & transitions, working with
parents, carers & families, working with children & young people in groups and working with other practitioners

Requirements:
Delegates are required to complete a file of work based activities evidencing their mentoring practice as part of the course. Delegates will have two terms from the end of the six training days to complete their file of evidence.

Course Aims: To provide experienced Learning Mentors with an opportunity to revisit the key aspects of their role, understand the relevance of current changes in legislation and its impact on their role. Enhance their ability to support children and young people’s personal development, behaviour and welfare.

What is Supervision?
Supervision is a regular, planned accountable two-way process which offers support and develops the knowledge, skills and values of an individual, group or team. Its purpose is to monitor the progress of professional practice and to help staff to improve the quality of the work they do, thus improving outcomes for children as well as achieving agreed objectives. Supervision also provides an opportunity to discuss sensitive issues including the safeguarding of children and any concerns raised about an individual or colleagues practice.
How supervision benefits your staff? It is an opportunity to meet at regular intervals to discuss and receive support

Social & Emotional Development Programme
Course Aims: The aim of the programme is to engage pupils to explore personal understandings of
developing friendships/relationships
To further develop social skills and define what they are and how they can be effectively used
To explore emotional literacy skills and introduce a deeper understanding of difference in others
Course Content: The skills covered are:-

The workshops are delivered as one session a week over 6-8 weeks.
Target Audience: KS3 & 4 pupils workshops can be for a small group of 6 or a whole class. Training Delivery: Pupils will engage in group discussions and team building exercises. The focus area will be explored each week with an interactive exercise to encourage a deeper understanding of each topic and consolidate learning outcomes. Venue: This workshop is delivered in school.
Raising Motivation & Aspirations Programme
Course Aims:
Pupils will engage in a programme of study, focussing on raising motivation through the exploration of personal desires, self-evaluation and target setting.
The use of critical thinking will enable pupils to have more time to think a little deeper about school, their own personal rate of learning, education and the development of key skills.
Workshops are delivered as one session a week over 6-8 weeks.

Conflict Resolution Development Workshops
Course Aims:
Pupils will explore a personal understanding of the term Conflict and focus on resolution skills
Pupils will develop a deeper understanding of the skills involved in resolving conflict and recognising the key triggers and being able to reduce and redirect the potential of conflict
Pupils will develop a stronger sense of self-awareness and emotional literacy skills, and to broaden the ability to self-govern and take responsibility of own actions and thoughts
Workshops are delivered as one session a week over 6-8 weeks.

Target Audience: Workshops can be for a small group of e.g. 6 or a whole class. Motivation & Aspirations Workshop
Course Aims:
The aim of the programme is to engage the young people in a self –analysis of their current efforts versed their personal goals and desires.
The students will engage in creative discussions, develop a sense of responsibility and control for their learning, inclusive of homework, revision and preparation for exams.
Workshops are delivered as one session a week over 6 weeks with 2 follow up session in the following term.

Course Aims: This workshop will enable young people to build skills and effective strategies in making decisions and realising their potential.

Target audience: This workshop is aimed at pupils in year 6 preparing for transition to secondary
school. This workshop is also adaptable for pupils in other year groups facing other transitions e.g. KS2 to KS3, KS3 to KS4 and KS4 to KS5

Course Aims:
This course aims to explore different ways in which parents/carers can best support their primary aged children. The workshops will cover a range of personal and social issues relating to the development of young children and tasks that will help parents to better understand how their child might be feeling whist strengthening the relationship between them.
