He was willed to make Himself quite recognizable by those; and thus, willing to appear openly to those who seek Him with all their heart, and to be hidden from those who flee from Him with all their heart. He so regulates the knowledge of Himself that He has given signs of Himself, visible to those who seek Him, and not to those who seek Him not. Have you ever wondered: Why to some people believe in God and others do not? Or Why do some people “see” God’s presence in certain events or experiences while others who observe the same event or experience see no hint of God? Or Why can one person read a Bible passage and have her heart awakened to faith while another reads the same passage and yawns with boredom? I guess the bottom line query is this: If some people have faith in God, why don’t all people have this faith?

Consider what French philosopher and Christian believer Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) wrote about the hiddenness of God that seems to be necessary to preserve human freedom.

It was not then right that He should appear in a manner manifestly divine, and completely capable of convincing all men; but it was also not right that He should come in so hidden a manner that He could not be known by those who should sincerely seek Him. There is enough light for those who only desire to see, and enough obscurity for those who have a contrary disposition. (Pensees, No. 430, P. 118)

Question. 1. What is the chief end of man?

Answer. 1. Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever. Opening of the Westminster Shorter Catechism, 1647

Which might lead further to—

Question: “What does that have to do with me?!” Answer: Quite aside from capturing a core tenet of Reformed belief, it invites us all to participation in the body of Christ in addition to attending worship!

Congratulations to John and Stephanie Spires on the recent adoption of daughter, Raylee.

Sympathy to the family of Anne Purple who died on July 25th.

Thank you for the cards, calls, and other expressions of sympathy following the recent loss of my father, Marion Eldridge. These acts of kindness were comforting during this difficult time. Brenda Smith and Family

Thanks for the generous donations for the new cottage of Buckhorn. We received toys, games, outdoor furniture, and other home furnishings to help make the cottage welcoming for the boys. We still could use monetary contributions for a television and other items on the boys wish list. If you want to help you may make a donation to Second Presbyterian for "Rankin Cottage Housewarming” and we will purchase the needed items.

A Thank You letter was received from First Presbyterian Church in Frankfort who received donations of our VBS material . . Thank you to your staff and congregation for all the wonderful Cave Quest VBS materials given to us. Our VBS was greatly enhanced by your church’s generosity and the supplies gave us that final boost to help put it all together for our kids. Thanks for helping us to share the adventure where kids learn to Follow Jesus, The Light of the World!

FOR THE HEALTH OF IT

......and what does the Lord require of you but to DO justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

BUILD (Building a United Interfaith Lexington through Direct Action) begins it's 14th year on August 29th when team leaders representing BUILD's 27 member congregations gather at the Listening Process Kick-off. We will focus on how to conduct successful House Meetings with our church family. At our (Fredda and Bill Moody, Catherine Hunt, Jim Drahovzal and Judy Maxson) House Meetings we will discuss what it means to live out God's call to DO Justice, share our concerns and hopes for our families, friends and community and how we can act on our shared values of human worth, dignity and justice.

If you feel "something more needs to be done" about elder care issues, educational disparities within our public schools, drug abuse and gun violence, economic injustice, payday industry abuse, etc., your opportunity to share what truly matters to you will be heard. Your participation helps BUILD identify an area of common concern for further research; to get to the root of the problem...and action. We appreciate and value your input at our upcoming September-October House Meetings. See you soon!

• REMINDER: Everyone is encouraged to complete the Mental Health Community Survey for BUILD by August 1st. It only requires a few minutes of your time at... https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FAYETTEMHNEEDS. Again, even if a mental health/substance abuse issue does not impact you or your family directly, we all are aware of how the lack of appropriate, timely care does impact our community....and world. Thank You for caring!

• SAVE the DATE! Sunday, September 25 at 3:00 p.m., - CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Hunger Walk. Take a look at our new online pageQ(www.crophungerwalk.org/lexingtonky). Pictures and link to our newsletter included (https://lexcropwalk.blogspot.com).

JUSTICE MINISTRY UPDATE

Fix these words in your hearts and minds...teach them to your

children, talking about them when you sit at home ,and when you walk along the road Deut.11:18-19

Is it hot enough for you? It can be tempting to leave a child in the car for short errands--especially if they are asleep, but that can lead to serious injury or death from heatstroke. Young children heat up 3-5 times faster than adults. These tragedies are completely avoidable if we remember to ACT:

Avoid heatstroke injury by never leaving a child alone in a car, not even for a minute

Create reminders by putting something in the back of your car next to the child such as a purse or cell phone so that distractions won't lead to forgetting the child.

Take action. If you see a child alone in a car--or a pet--call 911 immediately. One call could save a life!

Teach your children that cars are not an OK place to play. Keep keys and opening devices out of reach.

New Adult Theology Class

Beginning in September! (9:40-10:40 a.m.)

There is a tradition - alas, erroneous - that Luke was a physician. He was, in fact, the historian of the Great Physician. His account of Jesus’ 15 stories (parables) is more than the other three Evangelists put together. Only Luke gives us that beautiful Christmas story without which Christmas would not be Christmas, and the account of that mystery man joining the women on the stroll toward Emmaus. Only Luke gives us Woman

writ large from Elizabeth to Mary to Martha - to those women of most courage who stood closest to the cross. In Luke’s telling all that was lost is found and this good news brings unbounded joy. The class, taught by Bob Maynard, invites you to join them in a new study of Luke’s Gospel beginning September 11 until the Sunday before Memorial Day, except for the Sundays of or nearest to Pace-

Warren, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and Easter. We invite and challenge you to see that this kind of in-depth study can be both enriching and uplifting.

If you wish to review the class text, please stop by the desk in the Gathering Place. For more information, contact Bob Maynard (327-4336 or 272-5815).

It is a joy to announce our music ensemble offerings as we begin the fall schedule. The Covenant Choir, conducted by Gary Anderson, will resume Thursday evening (7:30-9:00) rehearsals on August 18 in the Chapel. The choir sings at most 8:30

and 11:00 services. Members are welcome to sing at either or both services. We welcome new members with a special emphasis on including high school and college singers.

♦ Donna Phillips continues her good work with the Carillon Handbell Choir (large ensemble) and Agape Bells (small ensemble), preparing them for participation in worship approximately once a month. The handbell choirs begin rehearsals on THURSDAY, August 18, 6:30 p.m. in Room 201. As with the Covenant Choir, the Carillon Handbell Choir is seeking new members, high school, college or adult ringers.

♦ Kids for the Kingdom Choir will again be conducted by Emma Smith who joined our staff last year. Children will be rehearsing during W.O.W. (Worship Our Way) and in two, age-appropriate groups, grades K-2 and grades 3-5. In addition to the Sunday morning rehearsals during the 11:00 service, there will be some extra rehearsals to prepare for the Christmas Pageant.

FAREWELL TO MISSY WALLACE, DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

To My Beloved Church Family,

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. As a person who loves the changing seasons, this is one of my favorite passages in the New Testament. Every fall I look forward to the beautiful hues of colors, every winter I look forward to Christmas carols, every spring I look forward to new life and every summer I look forward to long days filled with glorious sunshine.

Over this past year, we have been celebrating the 200th anniversary of our church family, recognizing many of the servant leaders God has brought to Second Presbyterian. For the last six years, I have been incredibly blessed to be counted among them as your Director of Children’s Ministry. After an extraordinary season of life filled with so many beautiful memories, I feel that God is calling me to start a new chapter of life beyond the walls of Second Presbyterian.

Together, we have experienced life through seven different vacation bible school adventures. We’ve wandered through the Egyptian desert, climbed Mount Everest and more recently embarked on a geological caving expedition. When I unpack my decorations during the Christmas season, I’m always so touched to see the many years of Advent workshop crafts and all of the sweet memories that go with each one. Through every vacation bible school, Advent workshop, and Sunday school season, as a church family you’ve always been there with a loving heart, ready to serve the needs of the smallest members of our congregation. Every moment, you’ve shined bright as a reflection of God’s love for our children. I couldn’t have asked for a more gracious and loving church family to serve, and my heart is swelled with gratitude for all the care and support you’ve shown me.

Even though my season at Second Presbyterian is coming to a close, I am excited to see what new adventures are in store for our families and children. I’m pleased to share with you that our WOW storyteller, Jen Brown, will be taking my place as the next leader in children’s ministry. Ms. Jen has been a tremendous asset to our ministry team over the past several years and I know she will do an amazing job in her new role as director.

I hope I have the chance to express my gratitude and appreciation to each of you before I leave. My last official day will be Sunday, August 14th and I will be at the All-Church Picnic that day for farewells, if I don’t see you before then. Thank you again for the opportunity to love and serve the families and children of Second Presbyterian. I am very humbled and blessed to have shared these seasons of life with you.

Much Love, Missy
