The certification organization and the manufacturer shall evaluate replacement parts, components,software, and upgrade procedures to determine any changes affecting the form, fit, or function ofthermal imagers certified to earlier editions of this standard to permit incorporation of replacement parts,components, or software, leading to certification of devices to this edition of the standard.

4.2.8.2

Where a manufacturer has more than one model of thermal imager, all certified to this standard, thecertifying organization and the manufacturer shall evaluate replacement parts, components, software,and upgrade procedures to determine the continued certification when modifying a fielded thermalimager with replacement parts, components, or software in one previously certified model to becomeanother previously certified model.

All letters shall be at least 2 mm( 1 ⁄16 in.) in height. The label shall not be restricted to one line. The original NFPA required labelingshall not be removed or covered by the upgrade label.

Currently there is no minimum resolution requirement in the standard. In committee work conductedfor prior versions of 1801, it was determined that in order to clearly resolve a firefighters fingers in agloved hand from a distance of 15 feet, a minimum resolution of 320x240 was required. The SR testhas not been fully successful in accomplishing this. Therefore, the technical committee believes it istime to simply require a minimum sensor resolution.

A If an additional visual indication to the user other than a usable image on the display exists to indicatethat the thermal imager is in the powered-on operational mode (other than a usable image on thedisplay), the indicator shall be visible to the user any time the thermal imager is powered on.

6.6.4.9 Audio/Video Recording Indicator.

6.6.4.9.1

All thermal imagers equipped with audio or video, or both, recording capabilities shall have a visualindicator.

6.6.4.9.2

The audio/video recording icon shall consist of a solid red circle with a green border.

6.6.4.9.3

The audio/video recording icon shall be positioned in the left vertical section, above the location of the TIBASIC PLUS Icon, below a horizontal midline as shown in Figure 6.6.4 .

6.6.4.9.4

The indicator shall be displayed anytime the thermal imager is recording audio or video, or both, contentirrespective of the selected TI BASIC or TI BASIC PLUS operational format.

Thermal imagers shall be listed to ANSI/ISA-12.12.01, Nonincendive Electrical Equipment for Use inClass I and II, Division 2 and Class III, Divisions 1 and 2 Hazardous (Classified) Locations, and shall meetthe performance (test) requirements for at least Class I, Division 2, Groups C and D and Class II, Division2, Groups F and G hazardous locations, and with a temperature class within the range of T3 through T6inclusive. For the purpose of the impact test referenced in 15.4 of ANSI/ISA- 12.12.01, NFPA 1801 shallbe considered the applicable standard for products in unclassified locations.

Assessment shall include all user removable parts in isolation and the action of removing them from thecamera in the powered and unpowered state. Where the use of a tool-secured feature is relied upon tomeet the ANSI/ISA- 12.12.01 compliance, and this feature is not automatically engaged, the camera shallinform the user by way of a message that prevents normal use of the camera.

Specimens shall be optimally focused to 1 m by the manufacturer for this test. If the thermal imagerincorporates a visible-light camera or other sensor whose output is overlaid onto, or fused with, thethermal image, the sensor shall be disabled prior to conducting the test so that only the thermal imageoutput is used to influence image recognition test results.

Recently, some thermal cameras have been designed and marketed that incorporate a visible lightcamera output overlaid on to the thermal image. While the fused image enhances the performanceof thermal cameras in ambient light environments, especially for thermal cameras using lowresolution FPAs, image enhancement using visible light sensors are not useful in smoke conditions.
