with from school.  Due to accountability, our district is able to track & monitor their time spent within the

different programs.

Reading Goal:

This week we will read and

learn about a favorite

sport for many: baseball.

Let’s start with this funny

story titled Randy Riley’s

Really Big Hit. (6 min). As

you listen, think about our

plot chart and retell the

story. You can use the

summary chart below to

help you retell out loud or

by writing on paper.

Today we will read a story

titled Catching the Moon. It is a true story about a girl

that had to work hard to

follow her dream. Be sure

to watch all the way to the

end to hear the message by

the reader after he reads

the book. (13 min)

Today we will read an

alphabet book titled: H is

for Homerun (7 min). This

book will share some

wonderful facts about

baseball and use

alliteration which is

figurative language where

many words in a sentence

start with the same letter.

Create your own alphabet

book. Think about a topic

you enjoy: nature, soccer,

school, etc. Write the

letters of the alphabet

Make a Venn diagram

telling the similarities and

differences between

Catching the Moon and

Randy Riley’s Really Big Hit

or between Marcenia in

Catching the Moon and

Sarah from the softball

video we watched earlier

this year. (Remember she

hurt her knee on her first

homerun)

Discussion Questions:

1. What is the problem in

this book? How did Randy

solve the problem? Make

a connection: Discuss a

time you had a problem

and how you solved it.

2. What parts of this book are realistic fiction and what events in this book are not realistic?

3. How did the author’s style, or sense of humor, help you enjoy this book?

Discussion Questions:

1. What is Marcenia’s

dream? What problems/

obstacles did Marcenia

have to overcome to follow

her dream?

2. Name 3 emotions

Marcenia felt during the

story and discuss how the

author used words, actions,

and illustrations to show

these emotions.

3. How might this story

have ended differently if

Mr. Street had not bought

Marcenia a pair of cleats?

4. What is the most

important thing Marcenia

learned during this story?

Why do you think this is the

most important thing?

down the side of a page

instead of numbers. You

could also staple paper

together to make your

own book. Your goal is to

write a sentence for each

letter. Give yourself bonus

points for using

alliteration like the author

did in H is for Homerun! Example: “F is for fly ball

floating freely in the air.

Who can figure where it

falls? It might be foul or

fair.”

Phonics review:

The link below gives

examples of how to help

your child with phonics

skills during reading. It

also has some printables

and links to phonics

games.

Create a robot like Randy

did in Randy Riley’s Really

Big Hit using things from

around your house. Name

your robot and describe

the adventures you and

your robot take. We’d love

to see these posted on our

class pages.

Respond to Catching the

Moon by writing a story

about a dream, or goal, of

yours. Be sure to explain

what your dream is, why it

is important to you. Think

about what Marcenia did

to help reach her dream.

What will you do to reach

yours?
