  • Subject-Based Banding (SBB)

  • What is Subject-Based Banding (SBB)?• Sec 1 students posted to the N(A) and N(T) courses may be offered

    EL/Math/Science/MTL at a higher level, based on their PSLE subject grades.

    • PSLE eligibility criteria for offering higher level subjects:

    • Each student should take no more than 3 subjects at higher level so as to ensure that students can cope with the overall academic demands.

  • Rationale and Intent of SBB• Each student is different and possesses different strengths.

    • To help each student find fulfilment in learning, be motivatedto excel in what he/she is good at.

    • Starting SBB at lower secondary levels will better cater to thestrength of each student in different subjects and give him/hera stronger foundation in subjects that he/she is good at.

    • A broad and inclusive approach, creating a more diverse andflexible education system, with opportunities for all.

  • Eligibility Criteria for Subsequent SBB Intakes

    Sec 1 students who perform well at Semester 1 Weighted Assessment(WA) or End-of-Year Examination may be offered EL/Math/Sc/MTL at ahigher level.

    Course School-based Results (Semester 1 WA and End-of-Year Exam)

    Option to offer subject at

    N(A) 75% or higher in specific subject and60% or higher in the overall average

    Express level from next semester

    N(T) 75% or higher in specific subject and60% or higher in the overall average

  • Follow-up Required for Students Eligible for SBB

    • Students who are eligible will receive notification throughParents Gateway.

    • Please complete and return the consent letter on Day 1 whenschool opens. A NIL return is required.

    • Examples of textbooks to purchase:- NA students accepting the offer to study EL in 1 Exp,

    purchase only the 1 Exp EL textbooks.- NT students accepting the offer to study Science in 1NA,

    purchase only the 1NA science textbooks

  • Higher Mother Tongue Languages (HMTL)

  • Higher Chinese Language (HCL)Higher Chinese Language (HCL) is offered by the school and lessons are conducted during curriculum time.

    Students who are eligible to offer HCLHOD/MTL will approach students to apply for HCL.

    Students who are not eligible but interested to take HCLHOD/MTL will approach students to apply for HCL if they have met one of the following criteria: • PSLE CL A* or A with HCL• PSLE CL A* without HCLOnce confirmed, students may then purchase their HCL textbooks from the school bookshop.

  • Higher Malay Language (HML) and Higher Tamil Language (HTL)

    Students who are eligible and/or interested to offer HML and HTL• For HML, students are to approach the ML teachers when school

    reopens. • For HTL, students are to apply through the Tamil Language centre.

    Once approved, students will be notified to attend lessons after school at designated centres:• HML at Tanjong Katong Secondary School• HTL at Pasir Ris Crest Secondary School

    At Meridian Secondary School, your child will use their Chromebooks for

    1. Active Learning in all subjects (SLS lessons and learning resources, Video conferencing lessons, online quizzes and submission of work)

    2. Creation of digital products using ICT tools in co-curriculum areas such as Applied Learning Programme, VIA, Learn for Life Programme

    3. Communication and collaboration with peers and the community (sharing of artefacts and online SLS discussions with guidance from teachers)

    4. Independent and self-directed learning (Productivity Lesson in SLS, completing guided tasks and self-initiated tasks online)

  • Shoes & Socks• Students must wear black shoes with minimal white trimmings only. • Shoes may or may not come with shoe laces. • Shoe laces must either be black or white. • Brown soles are accepted. • High-cut shoes are not accepted.• Students must refrain from wearing shoes that are expensive and/or

    fanciful.

  • School Policy on Use of Mobile Phones and possession of other expensive items

    • Students should not bring other electronic devices or expensive items to school.

    • Students are not allowed to use mobile phones from 7.30 am till the end of curriculum time every day.

    • All mobile phones should be switched off and locked away in the lockers designated to each classroom before the start of the first lesson.

    • The CCTV surveillance system in the classroom blocks monitors movement of students and usage of the lockers.

    • Please call the General Office at 65831387 if you need to convey urgent messages to your child.

    • Date: 4 Jan 2021 (Monday)• Reporting time: 7.30 am• Attire: MSS Polo Tee with PE shorts

    While Secondary One students are waiting for their Secondary level School Smart Cards (SSCs) to be ready, they can continue to use their Primary level SSCs for concessionary travel till end Apr 2021.

    Students can still purchase the Bus Concession Pass(BCP) using their Primary level SSCs but they would need to purchase the BCP for Secondary School students.
