HELPFUL TIPS for the CAREER FAIR

1) Research all companies attending the event, log onto the career page of their website and view their job openings.

https://www.militarymojo.org/companies-attending/ Print out job specific job descriptions that you want to talk to

recruiters about and bring a resume tailored to that position. Recruiters want to see that you have done your research

and how you can help the company make money or save money.

2) Take your top 3-5 companies and do some extra recon. On LinkedIn, type the company name and your branch of service

into the general search bar. You may be amazed at who you know, or you may see that they have hired your profile in the

past. Read up on the company on Glassdoor.com, Indeed reviews, and CareerBliss. If it’s a publicly traded company, check

their stock that day. Use yahoo.com/finance since it will also pull recent articles…making it easy to reference at the job fair.

3) Introduce yourself to employers with your 30-second commercial as you present your resume. Lead off with your technical

skills – such as your degree, certifications, hard skills, and relevant experience, and always mention the name of people you

know who work for the company. Keep the 30 second commercial like a PowerPoint presentation - too much information

and it loses its meaning.

4) Dress for success. This is your first contact with the company. You can never overdress. The goal is to exude executive

presence in civilian business attire, employers want to envision you as part of their team.

5) Hand out business cards with your contact info. Have cards printed and include: Contact info; skillset (Engineering,

Logistics, Finance, PMP, Sales, IT/Tech, etc.). Include your LinkedIn URL. www.vistaprint.com is a good option, or print

them out yourself, just buy business card paper at an office store and use the template on your computer.

6) Request a business card from each recruiter and jot down a few notes after each conversation. If they don’t have cards,

write down their name and look them up on LinkedIn. Email or mail a thank you note within 24 hours of the job fair.

7) Don’t be discouraged if the recruiter directs you to a website to complete an online application. Many companies require all

job applicants to complete this step to facilitate federal government reporting requirements (there are new OFCCP

reporting laws). Just be sure to follow up by connecting with the recruiter AND a veteran inside their lifelines, and

reference your application (title + req number).

Don't expect to leave the career fair with an offer (although this does happen). The purpose is to make a connection with a recruiter

looking for an ideal candidate and to grow your professional network.
