  • A Season of Music First Presbyterian Church of Naples

I am excited to announce the concerts for the 2015-2016 A Season of Music! We have a reputation for excellent music at First Presbyterian Church and I am proud to continue that tradition this year. We begin the season by featuring Nathan Storey, a singer/songwriter, in a special concert to benefit the youth program at First Presbyterian. This concert will be held in our fellowship hall to create a more intimate experience. We will feature our magnificent 6,200 pipe Ruffatti organ in several concerts throughout the season. Concert organists Matthew Martin and Brian Jones will be featured performers on our wonderful instrument. I will be performing several concerts as well on the organ and I will be sharing a concert with my wife, Michele, our son, Colin, and our dear friend and colleague, Jim Cochran. Our terrific chancel choir will be highlighted in our annual Lessons and Carols concert and we will be hosting the Naples Philharmonic Chorus and Orchestra in a performance of Beethovens powerful Mass in C. We are also excited to

present violin virtuoso Daniela Shtereva and concert pianist Alexandra Carlson in a concert showcasing interesting and rarely heard works. Our magnificent Blthner grand piano will be in the spotlight for a special concert given by pianist Catherine Lan. Her concert will explore the many styles of Chopin including nocturnes, mazurkas, waltzes and more. I invite you to help continue the legacy of great music at First Presbyterian Church. Inside this brochure you will find an envelope to return with your support for A Season of Music. It is only through the generosity of people who love and support music that our church is able to provide such fine music that benefits both our church and the greater Naples community. Please consider sending a donation today. If you are interested in underwriting one of our concerts, please contact me at the church. It is my hope that you will be inspired to attend many of our concerts and that you will find them to be uplifting and meaningful. Through these concerts we will reach out to our community and beckon people into our beautiful church. Thank you in advance for your support and generosity. Dr. Brice Gerlach Director of Music Ministries

  • Nathan Storey Friday, October 23, 2015 7:00 p.m.

Nathan Storey is a seasoned folk rock singer-songwriter from Charlotte, North Carolina. Nathan has developed a sound where, he puts lush emotion and sincerity into each note making any listener sit up and take noticehis melodies and chord changes become hook laden delights,

as described by John Fonvielle, The Beat Magazine. In his songwriting, "Storey weaves intimate tunes, filled with emotion and powerful metaphor," as detailed by Hunter Gardner of Charleston Grit. Nathan released his second album, A Sea To Sail, in May of 2015. He is currently working on touring to promote the album and expand his fan base. His hope is that this album would connect with listeners on very relatable level and that his tour will allow him to make connections in person about music, life, and faith. Moving forward, he hopes to expand on this success and use his new record to open even more doors. Prior to his solo ventures, Nathan was in bands in his home town of Wilmington, NC. These projects were invaluable in giving him the experience to fine tune his craft and shape his music career into what it is today. He has made long lasting relationships with the talented musicians who he has continued to collaborate with on subsequent projects, including his most recent album. This Coffee House style concert will take place in Spencer Hall. Drinks and dessert will be served. All proceeds will benefit the Youth Program at First Presbyterian Church. Come enjoy a relaxing, casual evening and support the youth of our church.

A Trio of Friends James Cochran, Brice Gerlach and Michele Byrd Sunday, November 1, 2015 4:00 p.m. Our Director of Music, Brice Gerlach and his wife, Michele Byrd, combine talents with James Cochran for an exciting afternoon of keyboard and vocal music. You wont want to miss this event!

In addition to the magnificent Ruffatti pipe organ, Brice and Jim will be playing a Rodgers digital organ as well as the Blthner grand piano. Three keyboards, three friends in concert.

The program will include baroque gems, opera classics, and some Broadway favorites. As a special treat, Brice and Micheles son, Colin, will also join in on his violin!

This concert will be sure to entertain you.

    Its a family event!

  • Daniela Shtereva, violin Alexandra Carlson, piano Sunday, January 31, 2016 4:00 p.m.

Daniela Shtereva was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, into a family with preserved musical traditions for five generations. She began violin lessons with Elena Doykova and completed her high school studies with Elena Koynova. Shtereva holds a bachelors degree from the National Conservatory of Music

in Sofia, an M.M. degree from Louisiana State University and an Artist Diploma from Carnegie Mellon University. Currently, Shtereva performs as a member of the Naples Philharmonic and performs on a violin and a bow generously on loan from her teacher Cyrus Forough. She joined the Naples Philharmonic in 2008.

Alexandra Carlson earned her Master of Piano Performance and her Doctorate of Musical Arts, cum laude, from the St. Petersburg Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. She now performs a wide range of solo, chamber and orchestral works in Russia, Europe and the USA. Since moving to Naples she has

performed in The Rachmaninoff Festival, the US-Russia Bridge Project Festival, and the Arts Naples World Festival. She has also appeared with the Naples Philharmonic and in the Sypert Salon Series at ArtisNaples, and in the Guest Artists Recital Series at the Bower School of Music at Florida Gulf Coast University. These virtuosic artists combine their talents in a concert that will feature Guilllaume Lekeus Violin Sonata and Violin Caprices by Niccolo Paganini.

Brian Jones, organ Brice Adami, piano Sunday, February 21, 2016 4:00 p.m.

Brian Jones is the Emeritus Director of Music and Organist at Trinity Church, Copley Square in Boston. He is in great demand as a clinician and recitalist around the country. Bruce Adami is Director of Music and Organist at Christ Church, Exeter, NH. He holds a bachelors degree in music from Oberlin and has done post-graduate work at Westminster Choir College. They are known for their great mastery in setting the mood of each piece and for drawing the audience into the drama. They display consummate skill in the interplay between the organ and piano and seem to have an almost telepathic musical empathy as they play together. The two will perform works for organ four hands and four feet, works for piano and organ, and works for solo organ. The duo have been featured in joint concerts during the past five years from New Hampshire to Florida. You wont want to miss this special concert!

  • The Naples Philharmonic and the Naples Philharmonic Chorus Beethoven Mass in C Yaniv Segal, conductor James Cochran, chorus director Saturday, April 9, 2016 7:30 p.m.

The Naples Philharmonic and Naples Philharmonic Chorus present Beethovens Mass in C as part of ArtisNaples Around Town series. Beethovens Missa solemnis and Ninth Symphony are better known, yet his Mass in C has remained a favorite work (especially among singers) for its elegant balance, lovely melodies, and idiomatic vocal writing. The work is divided into the usual five sections (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus/Benedictus, and Agnus Dei) and interweaves the soloists and the chorus throughout. It employs the standard classical orchestra and its form, texture, and balance associate it with classical rather than romantic works. Nevertheless, the characteristic sudden extremes of dynamic, and the dramatic flourishes of Beethovens later works appears fleetingly, usually at moments of heightened joy or anguish. This is a ticketed event and tickets must be purchased through the box office at ArtisNaples or at the door on the evening of the concert. Tickets are $35. For additional information, contact the ArtisNaples Box Office at 239.597.1900 or online at www.artisnaples.org.

Catherin Lan, piano Discover the many moods of Chopin Sunday, March 6, 2016 4:00 p.m.

Concerto, Golden Key International Honour Society Performing Arts Showcase Award, Duane Wilder Award for Excellence in Harpsichord Playing, Canadian Broadcast Corporation National Debut, University of British-Columbia Concerto, Richmond Festival Gala Grand Prize, and the nationwide Concours de Musique du Canada. Currently on faculty at Palm Beach Atlantic University and Broward College, Dr. Lan also performs with Chrysalis Chamber Players, Palm Beach Symphony, and Atlantic Classical Orchestra. The theme for this concert will be the music or Frederick Chopin and will explore the many different styles of Chopin including noturnes, waltzes, mazurkas and etudes. In these informal concerts Brice takes the time to explain some of the mechanical workings of the organ and offers some musical insights about the pieces on the program. Each concert opens with a piece that highlights the magnificent horizontal trumpets protruding from the front of the organ case. A work by J. S. Bach is always featured and arrangements of Lenten hymn tunes are presented, allowing for some of the diverse solo stops and softer sounds of the organ to be heard. The concerts will end with a rousing toccata, allowing the audience to hear the full power of the organ. After the recital, the audience is invited up to the console to ask questions and to see the beautiful woodwork and craftsmanship of the Ruffatti.
