Uzziah’s Pride

In 2nd Chronicles we can read about a king of Judah. Uzziah was sixteen years

old when he took the throne. He did some great things for being so young and

inexperienced. 2nd Chronicles 26:1, “And the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was

sixteen years old, and made him king instead of his father Amaziah.” Amaziah had a

real problem with idolatry. It cost him his kingship and he died in shame.

All was going well with King Uzziah. He defeated enemies left and right. He

had towers built, he cut out many cisterns, had large herds, some enemies even

paid tribute. What a guy! Or at least, so it seemed. 2nd Chronicles 26:15-16, “In

Jerusalem he made engines, invented by skillful men, to be on the towers and the

corners, to shoot arrows and great stones. And his fame spread far, for he was

marvelously helped, till he was strong. But when he was strong, he grew PROUD, TO

HIS DESTRUCTION. For he was unfaithful to the LORD his God and entered the

temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense.” Burning incense was

only for the sons of Aaron, not for someone believing himself to be above the

written law. Pride was his downfall. When he was talking with the priest regarding

his stature as a great leader, he was stricken with leprosy and was led out of the

temple and died a while later.

The point of the story is this; Pride will always destroy our lives. Pride shows

itself in selfishness, arrogance, a lack of humility, an uncompromising approach to

others, and is the kiss of death for meaningful relationships. Pride is totally selfish.

Jesus always led us away from pride and in the direction of humility. Matthew

23:12, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will

be exalted.” What a shame Uzziah didn’t know that. It seems to me, that, it is better

to approach life with a humble attitude towards God and others rather than be

humbled. Amen

God bless you!

August Announcements and ActivitiesThe Pentecost Season. The name Pentecost comes from the Greek pentecoste meaning fifty. Pentecost comes fifty days after the Festival Of The Resurrection.

The liturgical color is green, symbolizing growth. This season is sometimes referred to as "ordinary time". The last Sunday of the Season after Pentecost is often called the Sunday of Christ the King. It is a day of triumph of our Lord and his final victory in the heart of the community.

SEASON AFTER PENTECOST (ORDINARY TIME) The Season after Pentecost, also called Ordinary Time, begins the day after Pentecost and ends the day before the First Sunday of Advent. It may include twenty–three to twenty–eight Sundays, depending on the date of Easter, but the first Sunday is always Trinity Sunday, and the last Sunday is always the Sunday of the Reign of Christ or Christ the King. The season also includes All Saints and Thanksgiving.

From Advent to Pentecost, we celebrate what God has done to inaugurate the new creation through Christ’s finished work. In the season after Pentecost, we celebrate what God does to empower us to live out the Gospel day to day and week to week in the context of our ordinary lives.Ordinary Time = Counted TimeMany sources point to the connection between the word “ordinary” and the “ordinal” (counted) numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.). Ordinary time is “counted” time: Rather than moving from season to season, in Ordinary Time we move simply

from Sunday to Sunday. Each Sunday stands on its own, and is counted as the Xth Sunday after Pentecost.

During this season it is also proper to emphasize that we are called to live out the Gospel day by day, one day at a time, not only in the notable experiences of life, but also in the mundane.

When the school bell rings at the end of every day, hundreds of kids across the Black Hills pour out of classrooms and into their after school routines. For some, this means heading home where they are met by a parent who helps them with homework before driving them to basketball practice and piano lessons. For others in our community, after school options are far less certain, stable and safe.

At Boys & Girls Clubs, we know the hours between 3:00-6:00 p.m. are the peak hours for juvenile crime and the time when kids are most likely to experiment with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and other risky behaviors. We also know that today in our Black Hills community, children are facing obstacles more challenging than ever before. Kids from low-income families are six times more likely to drop out of school, and 41 percent of kids across the Black Hills are overweight or obese – a number that continues to steadily increase year after year.

Boys & Girls Clubs provide young people with opportunities to engage in programs that help them achieve academic success, take charge of their health by building healthy habits that will stick with them throughout their lives, and foster the skills they need to become leaders in their communities.

Boys & Girls Clubs are there for kids when they need us most: after school, all day in the summer, and even Fridays. Our membership is open to all youth ages preschool – age 18, and for $25 annually, our Club members have access to a wealth of programming that has the power to positively shape and change their lives.

Our MissionTo enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.Education and Career Programs

These programs help youth create aspirations for the future, providing opportunities for career exploration and educational enhancement.Character and Leadership ProgramsHelping youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs. They also develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making, contributing to Club and community and celebrating our national heritage.

National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day August 4Did You Know? Americans eat on average 18,928 cookies (all kinds) in their lifetimes.

The chocolate chip cookie was invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield from Massachusetts, in 1938. Her husband ran the Tool House Inn, resulting in her cookies being call "Toll House "cookies. Nestlé's bought the rights to the name, and the rest is history!
