SYMPHONY AT THE DISCO

Get ready to celebrate good times! The Boogie Wonder Band joins the Cape Symphony for a unique experience where disco meets classical music in a high-energy show that knocks your socks off! We turn the concert hall into Studio 54, bringing traditional disco to a whole new level, loaded with violins, violas, cellos, trumpets, trombones and more . Groove in your seat to hits like “Night Fever,” “On the Radio,” and “Disco Inferno”! No velvet rope here —everyone is welcome to join the party!

Join us as we open our season with a journey to our own country, featuring Ellis Island: The Dream of America, a powerful celebration of the historic immigrant experience by composer Peter Boyer . This innovative work brings together soaring music, historical images and text from the Ellis Island archives, and the voices of real people who entered the United States in pursuit of the American dream . Among those who came here in the 20th century were many important composers — we present works by some of these talented immigrants, including the brilliant Igor Stravinsky.

In a famous scene from the movie “Amadeus,” Mozart dictates his final opus to his rival Salieri, feverish on his deathbed as he hears the beautiful music in his head . We look at the myths and facts behind his Requiem, an extraordinary affirmation of the power of the human spirit, and with Musica Sacra, Boston’s premier early music choral ensemble, we perform the choral masterpiece from our hearts. Incredibly, the Cape Symphony has never played Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” (A Little Night Music) until now, although this tuneful serenade may be his most popular work .

OPERA WITHOUT WORDS

Kick off 2019 in style with the Cape Symphony New Year’s Day Party! Enjoy this light-hearted celebration, with lilting Viennese waltzes, lively marches and most of all, fun! Spend this holiday afternoon with fellow lovers of live music and be entertained by a concert full of surprises to get your year started .

Ji-Hae Park, Violin

Before movies, opera was the grand stage upon which stories were told . With its mythic battle between the forces of good and evil, an inspiration for modern heroic sagas like Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings, Wagner’s epic cycle The Ring requires an enormous orchestra to support the larger-than-life music. Another dramatic tale, Bizet’s Carmen shocked audiences by telling a gritty tale of passion and jealousy. In Waxman’s “Carmen Fantasie,” the violin is Carmen, and international star Ji-Hae Park embodies her fiery virtuosity . The overture from Rossini’s comic farce The Silken Ladder provides levity amidst the drama . The orchestra is the diva in this extraordinary event!

we said to ourselves, ‘We no longer need to go into

Boston to hear good music.” — ELAINE USHER, BREWSTER

BEETHOVEN UNLEASHED

Follow the yellow brick road! In this rare concert presentation, the Cape Symphony partners with Cotuit Center for the Arts to perform the original lush Harold Arlen score and the script of The Wizard of Oz. The familiar songs like “Over the Rainbow,” “We’re Off to See the Wizard” and “If I Only Had a Brain” transport you to the Land of Oz, where you meet up with old friends Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion . Fun for all ages!

Like a rock star, Beethoven wrote music that was raw, unfiltered and personal. Performing without a conductor to filter his singular voice, the Cape Symphony musicians are set free to unleash the music of Beethoven . Concertmaster Jae Cosmos Lee takes the lead for the ebullient, uplifting Symphony No. 1 — the orchestra will literally be on its feet! Pianist Martina Filjak, compared by critics to a tiger for her fierce yet graceful playing, comes center stage for piano pieces from the pantheon .

Passion and romance come together to create the greatest love stories ever set to music, like the famous love theme from Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet .” Many romantic movies come to life with the gorgeous 18th variation of Rachmaninoff’s “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini,” most famously, Somewhere in Time. And Ravel’s score for the ballet “Daphnis and Chloe” provides a sensuous background to the charming courtship that unfolds on a Greek island . Dynamic Natasha Paremski makes her Cape Symphony debut — see why she’s beloved around the world . Come hear these timeless melodies of love .

June is bustin’ out all over with our special tribute to the beloved music of Rodgers & Hammerstein! Musicals like Oklahoma, Carousel, South Pacific, The Sound of Music, and The King and I are impossible to imagine without the iconic songs that we’re all still humming today . Rodgers & Hammerstein created the Golden Age of musical theater and guest conductor Peter Mansfield returns to the podium to take us there. Rising stars of Broadway from the nationally acclaimed Boston Conservatory at Berklee Theater Division join the Cape Symphony in a song-and-dance extravaganza.
