Season 2013-2014 Season Review - Results – Tables - Statistics Compiled by Alan Allcock with editorial by Dave Watters Two of the tightest title races in years and a steady march to pull away from a chasing pack in the other will be among the abiding memories when the 2013-14 Evo-Stik Northern Premier League season is debated. The Premier Division’s race went down to the final day, Chorley holding their collective nerve to secure the 2-0 victory at Buxton needed to finish a point ahead FC United of Manchester who would have snatched the title with their 3-0 home win over Barwell, NPL newcomers following their sideways switch from the Southern League last summer. On the way to winning the top flight and promotion, Garry Flitcroft’s champions also wrote national headlines with their run to the FA Trophy Third Round to meet Tamworth, the tie going to a replay in Staffordshire before ending in an agonising 6-5 defeat on penalties after extra-time for the Magpies. Runners-up FCUM, fourth-placed Worksop and Ashton United in fifth, joined AFC Fylde in the Premier Division’s promotion play-offs. It was the Coasters who emerged as winners to join Chorley in Conference North, their 4-2 win on penalties after extra-time over the Robins sealing a quadruple winning campaign, the play-off trophy joining the Lancashire FA Trophy and the Evo-Stik NPL’s Doodson Sport League Challenge Cup and the President’s Cup, the latter awarded to the club with the best fair play record in the league’s three divisions, in the trophy cabinet at Kellamergh Park. The Coasters had stiff competition for the league’s top sportsmanship award from Lancaster City and Brigg Town, the season’s best behaved sides in First Division North and First Division South respectively. The Doodson Sport Cup was lifted at Stockport County’s Edgeley Park by the narrowest of margins, the Coasters beating Skelmersdale United 1-0 just two weeks after collecting their county silverware with a 4-1 win over Chorley at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium. At the other end of the table, Droylsden made unwanted national headlines to finish bottom and without a win until the final day when the Bloods finally secured three points with a 1-0 victory at Rushall Olympic. In descending order, Frickley Athletic, Stafford Rangers and Stocksbridge Park Steels filled the other three relegation berths. Frickley were later reprieved in May following the Football Association’s annual allocation of pyramid clubs. The race to cross the line in First Division South also went to the wire with champions Halesowen Town alert to the dangers of both Coalville Town and Leek Town and needing their 2-0 at home to Belper to clinch the championship by two points from the Ravens. Leek, who finished third, were the NPL’s other notable flag-wavers in the FA Trophy, reaching the second round as one of the lowest ranked clubs left in the competition before losing 1-0 at home to Southern Premier Hungerford. The Nailers, who finished fourth, bounced back to win the promotion play-offs with a 1-0 victory in the final over fifth- placed Mickleover Sports. Heading in the opposite direction were Eastwood Town who resigned from the league and basement side Kidsgrove Athletic who were relegated. The Yeltz also secured the bragging rights for First Division South in this season’s Peter Swales Challenge Shield, courtesy of a 3-1 home win over First Division North champions Curzon Ashton. The Tamesiders left nothing to chance in their charge to the title, a 1-0 win at Harrogate Railway at the start of April wrapping it up with five games to spare. Ramsbottom United, fifth-placed finishers, won their second promotion in three years alongside the Nash via the play-offs. Runners- ups Darlington1883 were dispatched in the semi-final before the Rams won away again in the final at Bamber Bridge, edging out third-placed Warrington Town’s semi-final conquerors with a 3-2 triumph in extra-time. The 2013-14 season was not a vintage one in the FA Cup for the Evo-Stik NPL with Rushall Olympic the only member club to reach the Fourth Qualifying, a 3-0 defeat at Conference Premier Grimsby Town ending their dream of reaching the First Round Proper. In county cup competitions, Northwich Victoria, Ilkeston FC, AFC Fylde, Stamford, Trafford, Carlton Town, Rushall Olympic and Chasetown all triumphed in their respective finals though. In the goal-scoring charts, Worksop Town’s Leon Mettam romped to the league’s Golden Boot, his 45 goals dwarfing the totals of the leading scorers in the two lower divisions, Belper Town’s Jon Froggatt with 36 goals and Ramsbottom United’s Lee Gaskell with 29 strikes. Mettam’s goals were among the 120 the Tigers bagged to set a new NPL club goal-scoring record and break Mossley’s tally of 117, set in 44 games in 1978-79. Worksop had 119 at the same stage this season. Nationally, the Evo-Stik NPL celebrated earning FA Charter Standard League status this season, the award presented to the league’s proud officials before the FA Trophy Final at Wembley in March. Chorley’s skipper Andy Teague also won the Non-League Paper’s Steps 3-4 Player of the Year Award at the 11th annual National Game Awards at Fulham’s Craven Cottage while Skelmerdale United were named as the winners of The PFA Fair Play Award at the prestigious event. Internally, the league’s top stars were honoured for the third year running at the 2014 Evo-Stik NPL Players of the Year Awards in Barnsley by former Manchester City, Everton and Oldham Athletic manager Joe Royle. As well as the NPL’s three Teams of the Year, Royle honoured the inaugural Supporter of the Year, 82-year-old Mossley fan Kath Field and the six players named as Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year in their respective divisions. Darlington’s Stephen Thompson arguably won the most coveted award, the NPL Facebook Group Fans Player of the Year Award. Off the field of play, the Evo-Stik NPL’s successful partnership with official charity KitAid continued with collections of unwanted kit helping thousands of less fortunate young footballers around the world. Finally, in another first for football, the NPL Football Academy was launched in April. The only programme of its kind combining a youth league and academy offering further education, it opens its doors for the first time in September 2014.
