Chances are most of us are not originally from the place we currently reside. Many of our

ancestors, whether just one generation back or several, are from somewhere else.

Some people have explored new destinations so often that they need to affix pins to

a travel map to remember where they’ve been.

Opportunities for jobs, academics, and even simply a change in cultural or temporal

climate displace us, temporarily or permanently, from Point A to a new Point B.

Many people also love to travel—overseas or around the corner. We are curious about

how others live life and celebrate culture. Centre College takes pride that 85% of its

student body studies abroad at least one term. More pins to demark more Points.

Daily, it seems that we are always on the go. Point A to a new Point B. And, as much as

we love to travel, we always comment about not having enough time. This season’s Norton

Center Series helps connect those dots of where we are, where we’ve been, and where we

might go in the future. The Norton Center Series introduces us to new cultures, real or imaginary,

while reconnecting us with cultures with which we may be more familiar.

If you can find your seat in the theatre, you have arrived at Point A. As the lights dim, you are

conveyed to a new Point B, and perhaps a Point C and a Point D. Settle in and enjoy the

journey. You may need to fasten your seatbelts as some journeys are bumpier than others.

But don’t worry, before you know it, you will be transported back to all the familiar comforts of

Point A. However, while you physically never left, culturally, your internal travel map has a new

pin to signify a recently experienced journey. And that is a Point taken.

Are we there yet?

Chicago,” “Rawhide,” “Gimme Some Lovin’,” and more. Upbeat and uplifting, this

Described as “first-rate in every way,” by The New York Times, the Sphinx Virtuosi

is a chamber orchestra led on tour by the critically acclaimed Catalyst

Quartet. With a mission to advance diversity in classical music and inspire new

and young audiences with dynamic performances of cutting-edge repertoire by

a wide range of composers, this concert’s program is a reflection of the artists

themselves. The program includes works by Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, Benjamin

Britten and Astor Piazzolla, and features Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 6”

and Vivaldi’s “Concerto for 2 Cellos and String Orchestra.” Comprised of

classical music competition winners from the Sphinx Organization, a national

non-profit founded in 1996 by MacArthur Fellow Aaron P. Dworkin, the Virtuosi

focuses on overcoming cultural stereotypes of classical music. Dworkin was

President Obama’s first appointee to the National Council on the Arts and was

named one of Newsweek’s “15 People Who Make America Great.”

This sizzling 38-member troupe of dancers, musicians, and singers—the most

popular folk dance company in Brazil—performs a mix of choreography from

African and South American traditions, including slave dances, the dramatic

capoeira (martial arts) and maculele warrior dance, the exhilarating samba

reggae, and the company’s masterpiece, Afixiré (“dance of happiness”). In an

electrifying and vibrant display of movement, Balé Folclórico Da Bahia

transforms traditional culture into “a spectacular display of color, movement,

music and drama” (Chicago Sun-Times). The energy they bring to the stage

leaves audiences celebrating in the aisles. Called “exuberant, indefatigable,

and virtuosic” by The New York Times, this acclaimed troupe celebrates

candomblé, the uniquely Bahian spiritual practices rooted in the Yoruba religion

brought to Brazil by West African slaves. With explosive drumming, frenzied

dancing, and irrepressible energy, the artists “push themselves to their physical

limits…they dance so hard that their spirits show” (Dance Magazine).

. . . friday . NOVEMBER 1 . 2013 . 8:30PM . . . . . . . . . . .Country music superstar Scotty McCreery has had a blindingly rapid rise to

stardom since he became American Idol’s youngest male winner at age 17,

as well as the show’s first male country winner in 2011. The Garner, NC native

quickly emerged as one of country music’s most successful new artists after his

debut album topped the Billboard Top 200 and Top Country charts, earning

him a spot in the Guinness World Records book for being the youngest

male in history to score a No.1 album on the all-genre chart with a

debut release. The hot streak continued as he went on to win New Artist

of the Year at both the 2011 American Country Awards and the 2012

Academy of Country Music Awards. He also picked up the USA

Weekend Breakthrough Video of the Year for “The Trouble With

Girls” at the 2012 CMT Music Awards. McCreery was ranked

No. 1 on Billboard’s list of Top New Country Artists in 2011 and

also ranked No. 4 on Billboard’s list of “21 Under 21: Music’s

Hottest Minors 2012,” for his second consecutive year.

Béla Fleck, a banjo virtuoso with 14 Grammys® and over 30 Grammy®

nominations has worked in bluegrass, country, classical, jazz, and world music.

Nominated for more Grammys® in more categories than anyone in music

history, Béla has performed and collaborated with Edgar Meyer, Dave Matthews

Band, Bonnie Raitt, the Grateful Dead, Yo-Yo Ma, Chris Thile, and many more.

This season, he takes the stage with the adventurous string quartet Brooklyn

Rider. At home in both clubs and concert halls, Brooklyn Rider has appeared

in venues as varied as Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress and SXSW. Much

of the group’s desire to extend the borders of conventional string quartet

programming comes from their longstanding participation in Yo-Yo

Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. In addition to their Norton Center

performance with the Silk Road Ensemble in March 2013, Brooklyn

Rider previously performed at the Norton Center with Yo-Yo Ma in 2008.

. . . monday . NOVEMBER 18 . 2013 . 7:30PM . . . . . . . . . .In a 75-minute tour de force one-man production, stage and film actor Stephen

Lang enters into the personas of seven real American soldiers and sailors, rendering

firsthand accounts of the actions which resulted in each receiving the nation’s

highest military accolade: the Congressional Medal of Honor. Beyond Glory

gathers these men together in the present, as aged and scarred vets, to look back

on the defining moments of their lives, and to examine with pride, pain, and wonder

the meaning of courage and humility. Beyond Glory is not simply a play, but a

journey through pivotal moments of the American story, moments that

resound with lasting meaning for audience members old enough to remember,

and those young enough to yearn for inspiration. Stephen Lang is known for

numerous stage and screen works, including Avatar (Colonel Miles Quaritch),

Public Enemies, Gettysburg, A Few Good Men, Terra Nova, and Death of a

Salesman (on Broadway with Dustin Hoffman).

Intergalactic Nemesis is an adventure story—with a twist: more than 1,250 original

full-color comic-book images blasting from a two-story-high projection screen;

actors voicing dozens of colorful characters; a Foley artist creating a plethora of

unbelievable sound effects; and much, much, more. Equal doses of humor and

suspense, this production merges the thrills of a serial play with the vibrancy

of a graphic novel to create an out-of-this-world adventure. Declared a “raucous

romp” by the Austin Chronicle, this is a spectacle unlike any other and a show for

the kid in everyone. In this performance, Book One: Target Earth, Pulitzer Prize–

. . . saturday . MARCH 15 . 2014 . 8:00PM . . . . . . . . . . .With Tango Meets Jazz, Latin Grammy® award-winning pianist and composer

Pablo Zieglerartfully blends classic tango with elements of jazz, adding a new voice

to the rich tango lexicon. His tango-jazz quartet invites today’s most exciting jazz

luminaries to tackle classic tango repertoire and original Ziegler compositions

with bold, spontaneous jazz-tinged interpretations. After collaborating with tango

grand-maestro Astor Piazzolla as the pianist in Piazzolla’s quintet for over a decade,

Ziegler has led his own groups for over 20 years, refining and reimagining the

bounds of the New Tango tradition. This season Ziegler will team with 36-year-old

three-time Grammy® nominee, acclaimed vibraphonist, and composer

Stefon Harris. Harris’ passionate artistry, energetic stage presence, and

astonishing mastery of the instrument have propelled him to the forefront

of the current jazz scene. Widely recognized and lauded by his peers and

H.M.S. PINAFORETHE NEW YORK GILBERT& SULLIVAN PLAYERSArtistic Director ALBERT BERGERET

Now. Sea. Here. The seaworthy musical satire H.M.S. Pinafore put the wind in

Gilbert & Sullivan’s sails. The captain’s daughter has caught the eye—and the

heart—of two men at once: a lowly sailor and the pompous Sir Joseph Porter.

Only Little Buttercup can resolve the mismatched mess. Ride a wave of music

and laughter as romantic sailors, sisters, cousins, and aunts sing and dance their

way across the deck of the fanciful British naval vessel with the improbable name.

Set directly on the ship’s deck, this energetic production offers the rich

sounds of a full orchestra, chorus, and soloists who seamlessly merge the

classic elegance of the musical with a contemporary sense of humor to keep the

show alive and exciting for a modern audience. H.M.S. Pinafore, or The Lass That

Loved A Sailorwas first performed at the Opera Comique in London, England on

May 25, 1878, and has remained popular on both sides of the Atlantic ever since.

trademark highly physical dance theatre and mesmerizing aerial imagery with

film and graphics to create a unique visual production. Performed on a giant

curved floor like a snowboard half-pipe, which disappears skyward,

Scattered delves into the majesty and savagery of water, a fundamental force in

our lives. The mix of magical film and daring dancing creates an extraordinary

world in which the seven dancers move seamlessly in, on, and through

images of cascading waterfalls, rainstorms, arctic wastelands, and

desert landscapes. Motionhouse’s productions are designed to challenge

A peerless vocal improviser with a breathtaking range, Bobby McFerrin and his

band return to the stage with his latest project influenced by the spirituals his

father sang: spirityouall. Bobby McFerrin celebrates the transcendence of the

American spirit with joyful new takes on familiar tunes. The ten-time Grammy®

winner will always be the guy who sang Don’t Worry, Be Happy, but his

“greatest gift to audiences may be transforming a concert hall into a playground,

a village center, a joyous space” (The LA Times). What Bobby McFerrin

does is not an act; it is spontaneous invention. His legendary solo vocal

performances have dazzled audiences all over the world and sent them home

A cross between chilling crime drama and Baroque opera with live orchestra,

The Infernal Comedy: Confessions of a Serial Killer is based on the real-life

story of twice-imprisoned serial killer Jack Unterweger (played by John Malkovich).

Mysteriously back from the grave for an autobiographical book tour, Unterweger

oozes disconcerting charm, as he narrates his sordid and shocking history. Each

chapter, exploding with dark humor and tempestuous irony, concludes with an

aria from Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Vivaldi, and more, sung live by stunning

sopranos—all too tempting prospects for Unterweger’s bloodlust. Best known

for the 1999 film Being John Malkovich, actor John Malkovich has

appeared in over 65 movies. For his work on stage and screen, he

has been awarded an Obie (True West), and an Emmy (Death of a

Last season Charles Ross brought his One Man Star Wars show to Club Weisiger.

The sold-out audience demanded his return with a performance based on his

other favorite fantasy series: One Man Lord of the RingsTM. Ross hurtles his way

through the entire Tolkien trilogy recreating the magical world of Middle-earth

and all its enchanting characters. In this inspired performance, he manages to

complete Frodo’s epic journey from the Shire to the fire—armed with nothing

more than a pair of elbow pads and his outrageous imagination. With riveting

stage fights, harrowing rescues, and brilliant vocal sound effects, he captures

every character—Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Aragorn, Boromir, Gimli, Legolas, the

majestic Gandalf and even the malicious Gollum—in a show that will leave

Weisiger audiences transfixed once again.

Furthering Mali’s rich musical tradition, Fatoumata Diawara presents a joyous

mix of the vibrant and understated, combining songs about love, politics and

empowerment. With arresting melodies soaring over intricate guitar and drum

arrangements inspired by Wassoulou tradition, jazz, and blues, Fatou has created

her own unique contemporary folk sound, with a distinctly African spin to

the concept of the female singer-songwriter. Born in the Ivory Coast and raised

in Mali, Fatou’s life covers a gamut of contemporary African experience: fighting

parental opposition to her artistic ambitions, combatting the cultural prejudice

faced by women throughout Africa, and winning success as an actress in film

and theater. She finally lives her dream in the medium she was always destined

to make her own: music. In addition to her recent, highly acclaimed debut

album “Fatou,” she found time to collaborate on Damon Albarn's Africa

Express and contribute vocals to albums by AfroCubism and Herbie

Hancock’s Grammy® winning Imagine Project. Fatou’s performances are

as strikingly beautiful and emotionally powerful as she is.

Classical pianist Simone Dinnerstein and singer-songwriter Tift Merritt come from

different musical backgrounds, yet their passion for music and performance makes

them kindred spirits. Night, their unique recording and concert collaboration,

blends classical, folk, and rock genres, exploring common terrain and

uncovering new musical landscapes to create a sound all their own. Hailed as

“the pianists’ pianist of Generation X” by The New Yorker, Simone Dinnerstein has

been praised by Time for her “arresting freshness and subtlety.” The New York-

based pianist rose to prominence after the remarkable success of her self-

financed recording of Bach’sGoldberg Variations. Dinnerstein’s talents are a solid

match for Grammy®-nominated alt-country darling Tift Merritt, who has built a

critically acclaimed body of work comprising sonic short stories and poignant

performances. The Wall Street Journal applauds her “sound that weaves

through country, folk, and rock…in the tradition of Joni Mitchell, James Taylor,

and Leonard Cohen.”

Described as a “quartet with a difference” by the Irish Times, the Dublin Guitar

Quartet is a one-of-a-kind classical guitar ensemble that occupies a unique

space in the wider chamber music world. Their concerts include a mix of new

works and modern classics by internationally acclaimed composers. Since its

formation at the Dublin Conservatory of Music and Drama, the Quartet has

worked to expand the limited repertoire by commissioning new works and

adapting modern masterpieces from outside of the guitar repertoire. They

were recently awarded an Arts Council of Ireland grant for commissions, the first

of which is a new work for electric guitar quartet by New York composer Michael

Gordon. They have been successful in bringing new music to unlikely audiences

as well, playing as guests of ‘rock’ groups such as The Redneck Manifesto (Dublin)

and Final Fantasy (Canada). Audiences can expect an explosive, entertaining,

and completely novel concert experience for the Quartet’s Club Weisiger and

United States tour debut.
