September Meeting: Oregon Coast and Puget

Sound Saltwater with David Paul Williams

All that water and the waves can be downright intimidating but fish-rock bass, surfperch, coastal cutthroat, resident coho, lingcod and more-swim in the salt. In his saltwater beach (and boat) fishing program, David Paul Williams provides clues about where to go, what to use, and when to go along the Oregon coast and Washington's Puget Sound which boasts

1800 miles of beach. And for those who want to lock up the big dogs, he'll talk about chum salmon and broken rods. David Paul Williams started hanging out on beaches over 20 years ago and loves to share his knowledge about saltwater fishing. Board Members Wanted

The Santiam Flycasters want you! We are looking for a few good men and women. If you are inter-ested in helping decide who our presenters are and where we go for our outings, please join us. Or, if you just want to find out what goes on during the board meet-ings or want to share your opinion; please join us. No experience needed, just your interest in fly fish-ing is all it takes to be a board member.

August 12, Willamette Smallmouth Outing

By Ken Karnosh

Nine of us floated the Willamette from Keizer Rapids to Wheatland Ferry on August 12 and fished for smallmouth bass. It was a beautiful, mostly high clouds day and the wind was also favorable (in other words, not blowing us back up the river!).

Fishing was pretty good and we landed up to 10 or more each, with the largest of 18-19”. The fish were “where you found them”, but I had good luck in the flat stretches of water at depths where one could just see the bottom. Just get the fly near the bot-tom.

Although this float takes about 6 hours, it is close to home with plenty of nice fish. Try it if you have not already done so!

(September 20 this month)

at Garibaldi’s Family

Mexican Restaurant in

West Salem from 6:00-

8:00 p.m.

Come join us to tie, learn,

or just visit about fishing.

Enjoy some tasty food or a

beverage, if you wish, as

or each person can tie a

pattern of their choice. It’s

very laid back and it is for

all levels of tying ability.

If you have questions, contact Kent Toomb at [email protected] or by phone at (541) 990-3964. Hope to see you there.

August 26 Little Nestucca River Outing Report

By Tim Johnson Six Flycasters turned out for today's club outing on the Little Nestucca Riv-er. It was a gorgeous day -- maybe a little too gorgeous. Ron Henderson reminded us at the start of the day, "Cutthroats are sun adverse, so look for shadows". The same can probably be said about all trout, but today's sea run coastal cutthroats certainly demon-strated that propensity. We had full sun all afternoon and very few fish

caught, except in what little shade could be found.

Ron hooked around 15 and landed half of those under the Hwy 101 bridge (in the shadows of the bridge). The largest was around 13". Very feisty fish. We also hooked some small sculpin under the bridge. However in the sun it was very challenging to find let alone hook any fish. A few were caught but those were mostly small and far between. Did I mention it was a gorgeous day on the water? I'll certainly return to the coastal stream but will look for a cloudier day.

September 9, Hosmer Lake Outing

Join us on September 9 to fish Hosmer Lake on Century Drive. The lake has rainbow and cutthroat, as well as brook, trout. You will need a floating device to fish it. The scenery is spectacular and there are some nice sized fish!

To get to Hosmer, you can drive over Highway 22 to Bend and then drive to Hosmer on the Cascades Lake Highway. A faster drive prob-ably is to drive I-5 south past Eugene, exit onto Highway 58 and drive over the Willamette Pass, turn left onto the Crescent Cutoff (USFS Road 61), turn left onto USFS Road 46, and drive about 35 miles to the Hosmer Lake road on the east side of Road 46.

Suggested gear is 4-6 weight rods with floating or intermediate line. Sug-gested flies include damsels, woolly buggers (including white), callibaetis, and soft hackles. Also, maybe some chironomids if you get tired of cast-ing. There may be a bit of surface action as well on travelling sedges.

Most fishing is in the main lake, but you can also fish the channel and up-per lake. If the weather is nice, the canoers and paddleboarders will be out, but they generally use different parts of the main lake than we fish.

The club will provide hamburgers for a Saturday mid’day meal, so bring a small side dish to share if you wish.

Walton Lake-September 16-Cancelled

Because the USFS will close the campground at Walton Lake on September 14 to remove some trees, we are cancelling this outing.

Walton Lake sits at 5,200’ elevation and receives several plantings of trout. It also has a good campground.

Reports that we have heard is that fishing there is quite good now for some nice sized trout. Keep it on your list of potential places to fish!

Umpqua River-September 23

We’re trying this outing a bit later than usual this year. Maybe the weather won’t be quite so warm, although the fishing for smallmouth should still be good until the water temperature cools.

We will be meeting at the Elkton City Park, next to the Elkton RV Park, to shuttle upriver at about 8:30. To get there, drive I-5 south past Cot-tage Grove and take the Highway 38/Drain cutoff through Drain to Elkton.

You can camp at the Elkton RV Park or you can make it a long day trip. Join us for breakfast at Tomaselli’s at 7:30 or so, if you wish, before we gather to shuttle upriver.

A pontoon boat is best for this 3+ mile float. Suggested equipment is a 4-6 weight rod, intermediate or Type 3 sinking line, and woolly bugger, clouser, or similar flies, preferably beadhead or weighted. Bring your fins to position yourself in the slow moving water.

The club will not provide a meal, so remember to bring your food, water, sunscreen, and PFD.

Bunny Dun Midge Version

By Kent Toomb

The Bunny Dun was originally tied by Jim Cannon of the Blue Quill Angler in Colorado. This is a version with a twist to the snowshoe rabbit foot hair used for the wing. Bryan Hostetler added the material Polaraire to the mix. The result is a material that floats like a cork and is very visible. I fish this pattern down to a size 26 and it is amazingly visible. If you like to use a dry dropper this fly will float a small beadhead. By changing the color of the thread you can cover BWO’s, PMD’s and Baetis. I use Frog’s Fanny dry powder to float the fly. I like the brush applicator because it lets you work the powder into the fibers.

Size 18 – 28 Recipe Hook: Dry Fly 18-28

Thread: Veevus 16/0 Black (Match thread to bugs)

Wing: Snowshoe Rabbit Foot with Polaraire fibers blended in

Body: Thread covered by clear micro tubing.

The first step is to make the wing material. Take a natural snowshoe rabbits foot and cut the hair from the bottom of the foot. Then cut hanks of different colors of Polaraire about ¾ of an inch. Combine in a coffee grinder.

Page 4

Next place the hook in the vise and start your thread at the eye and wrap rearward to the point of the hook. Advance the thread forward to half way between the point of the hook and the eye.

Now take a small amount of the wing material and orient the fibers in the same direction by pull-ing it apart several times. Once the fibers are oriented spin the fibers between your fore finger and thumb. This will be your tie in point for the wing. Tie this in the same way you would a post for a parachute but don’t wrap up the post.

At this point leave the wing laying forward and then tie in the clear micro tubing. Tie the micro tubing back to the bend of the hook. Advance your thread to the back of the wing. Now wrap the micro tubing forward to the back of the wing making touching wraps and then tie off but don’t cut it off.

Next pull the wing back and advance the thread to in front of the wing. Build up a thread dam and a taper to the eye of the hook. Wrap the micro tubing in front of the wing a couple of wraps and tie off. Whip finish the head. Trim the wing to the desired length. I like to make the wing the length of the body. Give it a try. Happy Fishing.
