NorthCentralWestVirginiaCoalHeritageAreaCherieCoogle&MikeRohaly(NACMHA)ThispresentationisintendedtoraiseawarenessofthecoalminingheritageresourcesinNorthCentralWestVirginiaandopportunitiesforsmallgroupstoworktogether.Resourcesandinterestexistinsignificantquantitiesinthisregion.Recentattemptsatgrantfundingtoimprovethisnetworkhavefailed.Inmostcasesthereasonhasbeentheinabilitytoshowrealevidencethatregionalgroupsaresincereaboutandcapableofworkingtogether.Thispresentationwilloutlinemanyoftheresourcesalreadyinplaceandwayswecanworktogetherwithinourindividualbudgetandtimeconstraints.OurmodelcontinuestobetheestablishedCoalHeritageAreainthesouthernpartofthestateofWestVirginia.NACMHAandMarionCountynowhavearepresentativeonthatboard.Thisisoneofthewayswecanimproveourknowledgeofstrengtheningbondsbetweensmallerpocketsofinterestgroupsandresources.Anotherexampleishelpingeachotherbynetworkingwithcontactswhocanhelp,speakingforeachothertothosecontactswithwhomwemighthaveabetterrapport.Wewillidentifysomeoftheexistinggroupswiththecommoninterestofcoalminingheritageandofferourownresourcestoimprovecommunicationaswemoveforward.TheChallengesofRecruitingandRetainingVolunteersAmieC.Clark(MississippiAgricultureandForestryMuseum)Thevolunteerisavitallinkinthemuseumexistence.Volunteersworktogetherwithstafftobringthemuseumtolifeandplayamajorroleinrelatingthepurposetothevisitor.However,itisoneofthemorechallengingareasofmuseumlifetosuccessfullyuse.Itisvitaltoidentifywaysinwhichstaffandvolunteerscanworktogetherinthemuseumsetting.Thegoalsofthispresentationare;toidentifyanddiscusschallengesinrecruitingvolunteers;todiscussandidentifywaystoeffectivelyengageandusevolunteersinmultipleareasonanongoingbasisandtodiscussandidentifywayswearerecognizingandrewardingvolunteersinordertoencouragevolunteerretention.Wewillidentifyareaswithinthemuseumwhereweusevolunteersanddiscussthechallengesandsuccesseswe’vehadworkingwiththem.Wewouldliketofacilitateandencouragediscussionamongstattendingprofessionalstohelpthemenhancethemuseumexperienceforstaff,volunteersandvisitors.Wewouldlikeparticipantstocomeawaywithabetterunderstandingofhowtousevolunteersintheirrespectiveprograms.Theywilllearnhowtoidentifychallengestorecruitingandretainingvolunteersandgainnetworkingcapabilitiestocreativelyaddresschallengestheymayfacewithintheirownprogram.
