Reflections by Reverend Robert W. Asinger
The Church by the Sea is not just a in the local community—it is an important part of the community. The Spring Gala, being held at the Sea View Hotel on Saturday, April 26, is an opportunity to bring the community together, to strengthen
our relationships within the community, and highlight the many ways we serve our community. Did you know that:
In times of crisis the Church by the Sea teamed up with the Bal Harbour Police Department to collect donations to help in the aftermath of the Haiti Earthquake? Or that the church serves as the election polling place for Bal Harbour?
Our mission committee donated funds and then planned the “Bake Off” fundraiser to assist with the “Pride Outside,” a fund raising campaign which members of our congregation headed up, to renovate the condemned playground at our local elementary school—the Ruth K. Broad school?
The Church by the Sea has been recognized by the Florida Conference of the United Church of Christ as one of the largest total and per capital givers to Our Church’s Wider Mission (OCWM). OCWM supports disaster responses, domestic and international missionaries, and helps provide staff for support and programs at a conference and national level?
The Church by the Sea offers financial support, plus a counseling office free of charge, for the Samaritan Counseling Centers of South Florida which provides affordable, sliding-fee-scale, faith-sensitive counseling to the local community?
Rev. Barbara Asinger offers pastoral counseling providing spiritual and emotional healing to members and non-church members alike?
(continued on page 2)

The Church by the Sea hosts a hot meal in our Fellowship Hall once a month for those who are homeless or need food assistance?
We serve a meal at the Chapman Center for the homeless in downtown Miami once a month and twice a month of there is a fifth Wednesday?
We strengthen local outreach agencies with financial assistance giving away over $46,000 so they can better serve our local community?
The Church, in partnership with the Bal Harbour Police Department and the County Commissioner’s office, supplies Thanksgiving meals and toys for children at Thanksgiving and Christmas?
We collect Christmas clothing and toys for the Farm Migrant workers and their families in the Redlands?
Rev. Rob Asinger shares the dais with local dignitaries to offer a prayer at the Surfside Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day commemoration services. He also participated in the local Rotary Club’s celebration and recognition of the Police Officers of the year along with the Police Chiefs of Surfside, Bal Harbour, and Bay Harbor Islands, the Police Officers of the year awards?
The Church offers meeting space for AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) meetings every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday?
The Church offered our Fellowship Hall free of charge to FLIC (Florida Immigration Coalition) which organized a fundraiser for local children to raise funds for and in support of children of immigrants?
We collected school supplies, and supplemented them with a financial donation, so that every student in Little Haiti’s Toussaint L’Ouverture Elementary School had enough school supplies to start the school year ready to learn?
We partner with other groups to help broaden the spiritual support available to the community by offering affordable space to Peter Barber’s Yoga group and the Rev. Boyko’s Russian language church?
We provide scholarships for local youth (some who are not members of the church) making it possible for them to participate in educational trips and opportunities they would not otherwise be able to afford?
We provide scholarships for local youth (some who are not members of the church) so they can attend youth retreats offered by the Florida Conference of the UCC?
We provide engaging worship that is applicable to everyday living for adults and children that offers hope and healing? It is a delight realizing as I compose this that the longest newsletter article I have written is one that speaks to all the ways the church contributes to the well-being of our community—both local and abroad. The Spring Gala is an opportunity to raise not only funds, but also to raise friends and awareness within our community to ensure these wonderful programs that benefit our community can continue. If you have any questions about the Gala please contact Danielle Touboul at [email protected]. Blessings, Rob

PALM SUNDAY ~ APRIL 13
WORSHIP THROUGH MUSIC Francis Poulenc's Gloria
Featuring our very own soloists accompanied by an ensemble of instrumentalists under the baton of Harold Dioquino with Gordon Roberts at the Schantz organ.
Poulenc’s very distinctive style relies principally on strong musical contrasts. The harmony moves between Stravinskian dissonance and lush, sensuous chord progressions; vigorous counterpoint in clipped, angular phrases alternates with lyrical melodic writing; dynamics frequently range from a hushed piano to an emphatic forte within the space of a bar or two. Poulenc skillfully uses this colorful musical palette to express a wide range of emotions, from lyrical serenity to unashamed glee. The Gloria was commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation of America. The words from the Mass are set to music of an unmistakable freshness and vivacity. To some critics at the time suggesting that it bordered on the sacrilegious, Poulenc replied, “While writing it I had in mind those Crozzoli frescoes with angels sticking out their tongues, and also some solemn-looking Benedictine monks that I saw playing football one day.” The work is divided into six short movements. After a brief introduction, the chorus enters with a prominent dotted figure to the word Gloria which forms the basis of this movement. The animated second movement, Laudamus Te, reveals Poulenc in playful mood, with the chorus for the most part divided into pairs of voices—sopranos and tenors; altos and basses—exchanging a series of short, pithy phrases. In the expressive third section, Domine Deus, the soprano soloist is heard for the first time with a typically yearning melody, whilst the chorus is allocated a supporting role. We are then abruptly whisked back to the playground for the brief and chirpy Domine Fili Unigenite. The soprano soloist returns for the exquisite Dominus Deus, Agnus Dei, with soloist and chorus sometimes combining and sometimes exchanging lyrical phrases. In the sixth movement a short, majestic opening soon gives way to an animated section at the words Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris. Peace and serenity suffuses the radiant closing pages of the work but, characteristically, Poulenc cannot resist a last, loud interjection at the first Amen, where he briefly recalls the dotted Gloria figure of the very opening, before calm is restored for the final Amen. Poulenc’s sense of humor and love of life shine through all his music, however solemn the text might be. One of his friends said of him, ‘There is in him something of the monk and the street urchin.” The Gloria brilliantly expresses these characteristics, with its captivating mixture of solemnity and mischievous exuberance.
YOUTH BRUNCH
Once again, the Youth at the Church by the Sea will prepare a brunch to be served in Fellowship Hall immediately following the 10:30am worship service on Palm Sunday. The Youth Group will cook to perfection the dishes which will include: 2 scrambled eggs, 2 turkey bacon slices, 2 buttermilk pancakes, and our CBTS Signature Home Fries... The brunch is open to everyone. All proceeds will be used to fund youth activities and the mission and outreach programs that the youth support.

Environmental Stewardship Green Tip Of The Month
Adapted from an article on CNN website
Changing our font to help save the planet… It all started as a science fair project. As a neophyte sixth-grader at Dorseyville Middle School, Suvir noticed he was getting a lot more handouts than he did
in elementary school. Interested in applying computer science to promote environmental sustainability, Suvir decided he was going to figure out if there was a better way to minimize the constant flurry of paper and ink. Collecting random samples of teachers' handouts, Suvir concentrated on the most commonly used characters (e, t, a, o and r). Next he enlarged the letters, printed them and cut them out on cardstock paper to weigh them to verify his findings. He did three trials for each letter, graphing the ink usage for each font. From this analysis, Suvir figured out that, if using Garamond with its thinner strokes exclusively, the federal government could save nearly 30% or $136 million per year. An additional $234 million could be saved annually if state governments also jumped on board, he reported. He determined that ink is more valuable than perfume.
We at the Church by the Sea are switching to Garamond font and invite you to join us as we make small strides in healing a planet!
Earth Day is Tuesday, April 22

~MISSION: A LOOK BACK…~ The LOVE FEST
The Mission Committee hosted A Love Fest in February to lift up all the ways we Love Our Neighbor as Ourselves. Thank you to all who volunteered and assisted in helping us to educate our community about the many possible ways to get involved in the mission programs of our church. The LOVE FEST combined children and adult activities that allowed us to love ourselves as we discover the ways we can love others in our community.
