Purpose of Conversion

• Create a maintenance ship with the following capabilities:– Full I-Level maintenance support for

Marine Corps aircraft and ground vehicles and limited I-Level repair for ships.

– Expeditious deployment and transit to the Joint Operational Area (JOA).

– Conduct sustained operations in the mission area.

Design Philosophy

• Minimize changes to baseline hull.• Priorities: 1) Air, 2) Ground, 3) Ship

Maintenance• Utilize Mobile Maintenance Facility (MMF)

concept to provide flexibility and reduce the need for large fixed shops.

• Ease of material movement via well deck, flight deck, cranes, hatches, and internal pathways.

Concept of Operations

• Provide sea based I-Level maintenance support for Marine Corps air and ground vehicles and ships.

• Provide rapid deployment capability and flexible mission payload via MMF concept.

• Transportation of MEB components to and from the battlefield for repair and return to service utilizing the well deck and flight deck.

• Deploy tiger teams to repair equipment in the field or onboard other ships.

Conclusions & Recommendations

• Well Deck capability critical.• Modified Repeat Amphib vs. “Big Box”

conversion.• The MMF should be explored for other

maintenance applications.• Next design iteration should study

maintenance throughput requirements.
