Section 1.0-1

1.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The S-Systems Single Channel Controller is a compact electronic assembly which is used to automatically control the replenishment of a solution. It uses the output from a photovoltaic cell to determine the concentration of the solution by colorimetric analysis. The controller then activates the replenishment pumps according to the analysis. The controller is enclosed in a JIC NEMA fiberglass-reinforced case of the following dimensions: 11.5"h X 9.5"w X 6"d. For convenience of installation, it has drilled wall-mounting tabs. Shipping weight is approximately 14 pounds.

The S-Systems Single Channel Controller must be used in conjunction with either an In-tank Probe or a Flow-through Cell. These probes supply the photovoltaic output used by the controller. The required replenishment pumps are available through S-Systems or may be procured locally. Provision has been included for a switched AC output to operate the replenishment pumps.

The S-Systems Single Channel Controller is provided in two models: the SE-471, which activates the replenishment pumps when the solution becomes "too light" and the SE-201, which activates the replenishment pump when the solution becomes "too dark".

Proper selection of controller and sensor is necessary for optimum performance. The following table depicts the various combinations available.

NOTE: Voltage must be specified at time of order. If electronic diaphragm pumps are to be used for replenishment, appropriate power outlets should be available.

2.2 PLUMBING

When used in conjunction with the Flow-through cell, a means of delivering the sample through the cell must be provided. The preferred method is to install a tee in the outlet line of the recirculating pump using 1/2" NPT plumbing. It is then piped to the Flow-through cell and returned to the bath. If recirculation is not used, a sample pump may be used to provide the solution to the Flow-through cell. A 20' electrical cable is provided to connect the cell to the controller, thereby allowing the cell to be mounted close to the bath. This will avoid significant delay in sensing time due to long solution flow.

NOTE: No plumbing is required when used in conjunction with the In-Tank probe. The choice of Colorimetric Sensors is covered in Section 4.0.

2.3 VENTILATION

The S-Systems single Channel Controller requires no ventilation.

3.0 UNPACKING

The SE/471-201 is ruggedly built and packaged to withstand reasonably rough handling. Nevertheless, S-Systems recommends that upon receiving the controller, the package be opened and inspected for obvious damage. Report all damage to the carrier immediately.

Compare the packing list to all items shipped. Report any shortages to S-Systems.

Compare the serial number on the unit with that on the paperwork report any discrepancy to S-Systems.

4.0 ACCESSORIES

4.1 SE-404 IN-TANK PROBE: 75042 (see figure 10.2.1, section 10)

The SE-404 is comprised of two glass cane optics approximately one foot in length, having a gap of one centimeter between the optical surfaces. The other end of each cane passes through a watertight fitting into a gasketed fiberglass reinforced box in which there is a 12 volt light source at the face of one optic, and a photovoltaic device at the face of the other. A 20' cable connects the probe to the controller. The entire assembly is protected by a polypropylene shield which may be bolted or clamped to the flange of the process tank.

4.2 SE-413 FLOW-THROUGH CELL: 75046 (see figure 10.2.2, section 10)

The SE-413 is designed for use in electroless plating solutions in which gassing, stray ambient light or spatial constraints preclude the use of the SE-404. The SE-413 contains all of the elements of the SE-404, except that the optics are only about an inch long and are passed through leak-proof fittings into a Teflon® block through which the solution to be controlled flows. The entire assembly is encased in a gasketed fiberglass reinforced box.

4.3 CHART RECORDER

Two chart recorders are available for the Single Channel Controller. They are Gulton/Rustrak Recorder 75218 (120v/60hz) and 75220 (240v/50hz), which reads from 0 to 500 mV Its dimensions are: 5.5"h X 6" w X 6"d. It is powered from a standard AC wall outlet (120v/60hz). Supplied with either recorder is a 20' cable which attaches to the recorder output connector on the bottom of the controller.

NOTE: Either of these recorders can be mounted up to 100 feet from the controller. Included is one roll of chart paper (part #75880), which should last approximately 30 days when the controller is operated 24 hrs/day.

4.4 METERING PUMPS

Two lines of metering pumps for use with the Single Channel Controller are sold by S-Systems.

1. A line of Gorman-Rupp bellows pumps is available that can be operated from the switched AC controller circuitry. If the pumps are sized properly with respect to capacity, this type should be suitable for most shop needs.

2. A line of ProMinent electronic diaphragm pumps is available. These pumps are recommended for use when more than two components are required to maintain solution operating ranges. They are powered from a standard 110/120v wall outlet.

5.0 INSTALLATION

5.1 MOUNTING THE CONTROLLER

The Single Channel Controller has mounting tabs at the top and bottom which are drilled six inches on center. This, coupled with its light weight (less than 141bs.), makes wall mounting both easy and practical. The controller should be located in an accessible spot within 20 feet (length of control cable) of the work tank and positioned at eye level.

5.2 MOUNTING THE IN-TANK PROBE

Position the probe in an area of the work tank in which it will be undisturbed by work racks. There should be enough solution movement to ensure that the probe sees a representative sample, but not such turbulence that gassing from the work interferes. The location should not be near the replenisher lines (minimum of 2/3 the length of the tank from replenisher lines). the probe can be either bolted or clamped to the tank flange. If these conditions are not possible, the Flow-through cell should be used.

5.3 MOUNTING THE FLOW-THROUGH CELL

The Flow-through cell has mounting holes accessible underneath the cover, which enable the cell to be screwed or bolted to any wall, panel or tank support. Solution flow must be from bottom to top.

NOTE: The cell must be oriented with the arrows pointing upward.

Plumbing as follows:

In the OUTLET line from the recirculation pump, install a TEE fitting, oriented so that the straight flow (run) is vertical and the perpendicular flow (branch) is horizontal. The run is returned to the bath and the branch flow is to the cell. The plumbing to the cell should be reduced to 1/2" NPT if not already so.

6.0 OPERATION

6.1 THEORY OF OPERATION

6.1.1 General Theory

As the concentration of the solution being controlled increases or decreases, the color of the solution changes. Light which is passed through the solution is partially absorbed by the solution. The greater the intensity of the color, the greater the amount of light which is absorbed.

The Single Channel Controller makes use of this principle to control the amount of replenishment components to a solution. Solution flows through a cell, on one side of which is a light source, on the other side of which is a photovoltaic device. As light from the source passes through the solution, the amount absorbed varies directly as the color intensity, which in turn is a function of the concentration of the solution. Conversely, the amount of light which is transmitted through the solution, hence the amount of light which reaches the photovoltaic device, varies inversely as the color intensity. The output of the photovoltaic device, in millivolts, is therefore directly proportional to the amount of light which reaches it. It is this millivolt output which is fed into the controller and processed to control solution replenishment. In order to increase the sensitivity, the light source (a 12-volt bulb) is powered by 8-10 volts. This causes the bulb to emit more heavily in the red spectral region, which is the band of wavelengths which are absorbed by the chemistries controlled by S-Systems Controller.

6.1.2 Function of Components

(Outside the enclosure) POWER SWITCH: Turns AC power to the controller on/off. Switch lights to indicate power on.

PUMPS: MANuaI/AUTOmatic-With switch in manual position, power is applied to the pump control relay, which in turn powers the four individual pump switches. With the switch in the automatic position, the pump control relay is energized as needed by the process controller. The switch light is ON only when the pump control relay is energized.

PUMP SWITCHES: 1 through 4 —These are powered by the pump control relay and are used to turn replenishments pumps ON/OFF individually. This is useful when calibrating the replenishment pumps.

TOTAL PUMP TIME: This meter operates whenever the pump control relay is energized. It is calibrated in hours and hundredths of an hour.

CALIBRATION KNOBS: These are the 10 turn potentiometers which allow the operator to make coarse and fine adjustments to the sensor output to match the set point.

PROCESS CONTROLLER: This is a compact proportional, integral and derivative microprocessor controller which operates in two menus: User Menu and Set-up Menu. In the user menu, the operator can only change Alarm1 (30mV.) In the set-up menu, the microprocessors are fully accessible, thus enabling the operator to adjust all control parameters.

There are two 4-digit LED displays. The upper display shows the value of the process variable. The lower display indicates the set point value.

Note: User menu and setup menu are not used to change set point value. Use up and down keys only to change set point value.

There are three push-button controls which are used to set all control parameters. These are described as follows.

NOTE: The preceding are all external controls or readouts which concern the operation of the Single Channel Controller. There is no need for anyone other than a qualified person with a working knowledge of electronics to remove the cover.

WARNING!!!

THERE ARE NO PROTECT7VE INTERLOCKS TO PROVIDE INTERRUPTION OF POWER WHEN COVER IS REMOVED.

(Inside the enclosure)

CONTROL RELAY: When activated by the Process Controller, provides a signal which activates the replenishment pumps (switch for each pump must be ON).

DC POWER SUPPLY: Supplies a low DC voltage (approx. l0v) to the sensor light source.

6.2 CALIBRATION

6.2.1 Replenishment Pump Calibration Two to four 20-foot cables with female receptacles are connected to the controller, one for each switched pump position. Plug the replenishment pumps into these receptacles.

Put the Manual/Automatic Pump Switch in Manual mode and use switches 1 through 4 sequentially to calibrate each pump as follows: Determine pump rate as follows: • Set up pump in accordance with manufacturer's instructions • Prime pump and fill the line with solution • Using an appropriately sized graduated cylinder and accurate stop watch, pump the solution into the cylinder for a given time (in minutes) • Read the volume in the cylinder (in milliliters) • Divide the volume by the time to get the rate (ml/min) • Adjust the pump per manufacturer's instructions and repeat until the desired rate is obtained.

6.2.2 Controller mV Calibration 1. Analyze and adjust the concentrations of all the various replenishment components in the solution to their desired operating concentrations. (Consult data sheet for your particular bath). 2. Turn main power switch to ON position. This will cause the entire display on the Process Controller to activate momentarily. The millivolt input from the sensor (upper reading) and current set point (lower reading) will then be displayed.

NOTE: The range of the controller is 0-500mV.

RAISE To increase the value of the selected parameter. Also used in conjunction with other buttons to change between User and Setup menus.

SCROLL Selects parameters in sequence for display and adjustment. Also used with other buttons to change between User and Setup menus.

LOWER To decrease the value of the selected parameter. Also used in conjunction with other buttons, to change between User and Setup menus.

3. Adjust the set point value to 250 with the RAISE or LOWER buttons.

4. Set the Fine Calibrate knob to 5 on the dial.

5. Turn the Coarse Calibrate knob until the display (upper) reads 250 +/-20 mV.

6. Turn the Fine Calibrate knob until the process display matches set point (250).

6.2.3 Alarm Circuit The Process Controller has the ability to turn on an alarm whenever the mV reading deviates from set point by a predetermined amount. This amount is preset at 30mV, but may be changed if desired. As delivered, when the mV reading deviates 30mV from set point, the alarm circuitry will activate, causing the ALM1 to display on the front panel. Positions 10 and 2 on the terminal strip inside the Controller enclosure provide 110 VAC (or 220VAC) which may be connected to an external alarm if desired.

6.2.4 Set-up Menu When setting the controller to read in percent bath strength, grams per liter mode, to change the alarm values, or lock in the set point, it is necessary to put the controller into SET-UP Menu.

NOTE: Percent and g/1 modes are approximate values. The farther away from set point, the greater the error. If you wish to operate in the mV mode, there is no need to go into SET-UP menu, since all other parameters, are preset by S-Systems.

6.2.4.1 Enter and Leave Set-up Menu 1. Depress and SCROLL and LOWER buttons simultaneously and release.

2. To return the controller back to normal display, press up and down keys at the same time. NOTE: When the controller is in Set-up Menu, it will automatically revert to the normal display if

two minutes elapse and no control button has been pushed.

6.2.4.2 Adjusting a Parameter in the User Menu Press and hold SCROLL button for 3 sec. Use SCROLL button to step through its sequence of displays. Each display will show the value of the selected parameter in the lower display and the legend which identifies that parameter in the upper display. To change a value, push either up or down while the value is being displayed. The values which have been preset by S-Systems are on the following page.

6.2.4.3 Setting the (SE-201) Controller to Display g/1 Manganate

1. Begin with the controller in the mV (default) mode and all the SET-Up parameters set to the values shown on page of this section.

2. Analyze the bath and, if necessary, adjust the replenishment components to the desired concentrations (manganate in g/l).

3. With the Coarse and Fine Adjustments, adjust the process readout to 250 mV (see 6.2.2). Record the reading.

4.Vary the manganate concentration +5% by working the bath, or -5% by regenerating permanganate. Analyze and record the change in manganate (in g/1).

5. Record the millivolt change (difference between 250 mV and that which is now displayed on the controller). Calculate the millivolt change per 0.1 g/1 per change in manganate concentration.

6. Select the appropriate values from Table 6.2 on the following page or calculate them from the formula below the table.

Page 12: SE471-201 New Style Manual · Two chart recorders are available for the Single Channel Controller. They are Gulton/Rustrak Recorder 75218 (120v/60hz) and 75220 (240v/50hz), which

7. Enter Set-up Menu (See 6.2.4.1). Change the decimal point (DP1) to 2. Next change the appropriate parameters to match those selected from the table.

Example: Suppose that an operating bath contains 15 g/1 of manganate, and that a 10% change (1.5 g/1) is equal to 30 mV, therefore a 0.1 g/l change is equal to 2 mV. Set the function values as follows:

IN1-H 3.25 IN1-L 0.75 SP1 2.0 DP1 2 NOTE: IN1-H cannot be set at lower value than IN1-L. It may, therefore, be necessary to set IN1-L first.

8. Return to normal operation by pressing up and down key at the same time.

6.2.4.4 Setting the SE-201 Controller for Grams Cu Per Liter (748)

1. Work the bath, performing periodic analyses, until the desired concentration of copper in the 748 Bath is reached. Record the copper concentration (g/1).

2. Begin with the controller in the mV (default) mode and all the SET Up parameters set to the values shown on page of this section.

3. With the Coarse and Fine Adjustments, adjust the process readout to 250 mV (see 6.2.2). Record the reading.

4. Dilute the bath 5-10% with freshly made 748 solution. Analyze and record the new copper concentration (g/l).

5. Record the millivolt reading now displayed on the controller. Calculate the change in millivolts per 0.1 g/l change in copper concentration.

6. Select from the Table 6-3 on the following page, or calculate from via the given formula, the appropriate values to match the millivolt change per 0.1 g/1.

7. Enter Set-up Menu (see 6.3.1). change the decimal point (DP1) to 1. Next set the appropriate parameters to match those selected in step 6.

Example: Typical of a 748 bath, a g/l change is approximately 35 mV. Therefore, a 0.1 g/1 change is equal to 3.5 mV. The recommended operating range for copper concentration in 748 is 10-15 g/l; let us assume that we desire to maintain the copper concentration at 15 g/1. The set point (SP1), therefore is 15. Set up the appropriate function values as follows: IN1-H -22.1 IN1-L -7.9 SP1 -15.0 DP1 1 NOTE: In calculating and setting up the various function values, pay particular attention to minus signs which result from the inverse relationship between mV and Cu concentration. Once they are entered, however, they may be ignored. (A set point value of -2.0, for example, is 2 g/l) IN1-H cannot be set at a lower value than IN1-L. It may, therefore, be necessary to set IN1-L first.

8. Return to normal operation by pressing up and down key.

6.2.4.5 Setting the SE-471 Controller to Display g/1 Cu

1. Begin with the controller in the mV (default) mode and all the SET-UP parameters set to the values shown on page of this section.

2. Analyze the bath and if necessary adjust the replenishment components to the desired concentrations (Cu in g/1).

3. With the Coarse and Fine Adjustments, adjust the process readout to 250 mV (see 6.2.2). Record the reading.

4. Dilute the bath 5-10%. Analyze and record the change in copper concentration (in g/1).

5. Record the millivolt change (difference between 250 mV and that which is now displayed on the controller). Calculate the millivolt change per 0.1 g/1 per change in Cu concentration.

6. Select the appropriate values from Table 6.4 on the following page or calculate them from the formula below the table.

7. Enter Set up Menu (See 6.2.4.1). Change the decimal point (DP1) to 2. Next change the appropriate parameters to match those selected from the table.

Example: A 3350 Cu Bath at full strength contains 2 g/l of Cu; a 10% change (0.2 g/1) is approximately 30 mV. Therefore, a 0.1 g/l change is equal to 15 mV. Set the function values as follows:

IN1-H -1.17 IN1-L -2.83 SP1 -2.0 DP1 2

NOTE: In calculating and setting up the various function values, pay particular attention to minus signs which result from the inverse relationship between mV and Cu concentration. Once they are entered, however, they may be ignored.(A set point value of -2.0, for example, is 2 g/l.) IN1-H cannot be set a lower value that IN1-L. It may, therefore be necessary to set IN1-L first.

8. Return to normal operation by pressing up and down key.

6.3 SE-201 WITH ELECTROLYTIC REGENERATION

The S-Systems SE-201 controller can be configured to operate with an electrolytic regeneration system in an alkaline permanganate process. The standard pump outputs are used to control a DC rectifier with "pumps" current into the bath.

Contact S-Systems for more information on using SE-201 with electrolytic regeneration of alkaline permanganate.

7.2 PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

The controller itself requires very little preventive maintenance. It is of primary importance to keep it clean and free from corrosion. Since the controller is all solid state, it will require no mechanical adjustments. Replenishment pumps should be maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.
