T he San Diego Symphony is one of the most prominent performing arts organizations in Southern California. In a city full of vibrant performances from theatre to music

to dance, the San Diego Symphony leads the way by serving as a cornerstone of arts and culture. Led by music director Jahja Ling, the San Diego Symphony performs up to 125 concerts annually featuring the most internationally acclaimed guest artists of today including pianist Lang Lang, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Itzhak Perlman.

Ranked among the leading orchestras in the United States, the San Diego Symphony has an annual budget of more than $20 million. Performing in majestic Copley Symphony Hall in downtown San Diego, the San Diego Symphony offers a variety of music programs including its core classical series, the Jacobs Masterworks, featuring the greatest repertoire by the greatest composers of all time—Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Rachmaninoff. The Symphony has also embraced new composers such as Academy Award-winning Tan Dun and the extraordinarily talented, Bright Sheng.

With its varied and ever-growing audiences, the San Diego Symphony values and welcomes the next generation of concertgoers by serving more than 53,000 students through its education and outreach program in San Diego County.

B orn in Jakarta, Indonesia, Jahja Ling is the first and only music director of a major symphony orchestra in the United States of Chinese descent. The 2011-2012 season marked his eighth year as music director of the

San Diego Symphony. In addition, Mr. Ling is the first and only conductor of Chinese descent who has guest conducted every major orchestra in the United States and has made numerous appearances with leading orchestras throughout Europe and Asia. Mr. Ling earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in piano performance at The Juilliard School and received a doctorate in musical arts in orchestral conducting from the Yale School of Music. He was awarded a Leonard Bernstein Conducting Fellowship at Boston Symphony’s Tanglewood Festival where Mr. Bernstein became his mentor and championed his conducting career. In 1988, he was also awarded the coveted Seaver Arts Endowment Conductor Award for best and most promising young conductor in the United States.

HIGHLIGHTS• Mr. Ling was the artistic advisor for the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra from 1998 to 2001.• In 2009, Mr. Ling conducted the Worldwide Chinese Festival Orchestra, which was televised nationwide by China Central Television.• Under Mr. Ling’s direction, the San Diego Symphony has recorded eight classical compact discs including works by acclaimed composer Bright Sheng.• Mr. Ling holds the longest continuous artistic relationship—28 years— with The Cleveland Orchestra where he held the positions of resident conductor for 17 years, Blossom Festival music director for six seasons and guest conductor thereafter.• For Mr. Ling’s outstanding achievements with The Cleveland Orchestra, the U.S. House of Representatives presented a Congressional Record to him in the U.S. Capitol in September 2006.• The telecast, A Concert in Tribute and Remembrance, in which Mr. Ling led The Cleveland Orchestra in memory of the September 11 victims, received an Emmy Award.• Among Mr. Ling’s many recordings with various ensembles, one of his recordings with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra was nominated for a Grammy Award.• As music director of the Florida Orchestra, Mr. Ling was the first classical music conductor ever invited to conduct at a Super Bowl where he conducted Whitney Houston in the national anthem at Super Bowl XXV. It was televised to 750 million viewers worldwide and their recording went platinum.• In 1983, then mayor of San Fransisco and now Senator Dianne Feinstein invited Mr. Ling to conduct a special concert in Davies Hall for a state visit by Queen Elizabeth II of England.• In 1977, Mr. Ling was awarded a bronze medal in the Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master Competition which was presented to him by Prime Minister of Israel, Golda Meier.
