What is Dollars for Scholars? The Burlington Township scholarship Committee (BTsC) is a local, non-profit organization founded in 1988, and is affiliated with the Citizens scholarship foundation of america - “Dollars for scholars” program. Its purpose is to raise local scholarship monies to help local students meet the cost of their post high school education. This tax exempt organization is operated entirely by local dedicated volunteers and all monies raised are awarded to Burlington Township high School graduates.

Who is eligible for awards?any Burlington Township High school graduating senior is eligible to apply through the Guidance office. our trustees believe that any sincerely determined student has the right to continue his/her education. scholarship awards may be used for vocational, technical, two- and four-year programs.

how are recipients determined? The members of the awards Committee screen and interview all of the seniors who apply. The committee consists of the superintendent of schools, the Director of Guidance and 2 or 3 members of the scholarship Committee. Each candidate must submit an application complete with written essay on an assigned subject. all school academic records, evidence of co-curricular participation and proof of college acceptance are sent to the committee for review. Each student is individually interviewed by the 4/5 member panel and questioned on current events and other relevant topics. Then, using a common mathematical scale, the candidates are ranked in descending order based on the judgments of the committee members. The top 15 to 30 students receive financial aid, based on the monies that are available that year.

Who serves on the committee?During the 2011/12 school year, a wide variety of township residents served with the committee including:

Current and former members of the Board of Education Mark Bowen, sue Eichmann, Charlene George, Pat Wexler, Dom Zulla, Eric Ghaul

Current school personnel Judy Capritti, Dr. Christopher Manno, James Mills, Peter Tiefer, Christine Griffith

retired school personnel Dr. Walter Haworth, antoinette Horner, loretta Kimber, Barbara Zimmermann, Carol Zulla, Marie Phillips

how do we raise scholarship funds? The major fundraisers vary from year to year, but this year we conducted a large “Phone-a-Thon” in the winter, and we compiled this “honors Book”. The teaching faculty makes a contribution through their participation in “Dress Down Days” and the “SFa holiday Bazaar” was a 3rd major fundraiser.

To date, the commitee has awarded $468,000 in college aid. our committee also manages $99,000 in interest bearing trust accounts. one additional large $112,000 trust provides a four-year, $1000/year scholarship to a student planning to teach.

our trust fundsa truly remarkable way to honor your parents or someone whom you admire is to establish a trust in that person’s name and each year at graduation, one scholarship will be awarded in that person’s name!

The Members of the Class of 2012, and the Trustees of the Dollars for Scholars, express special thanks to Kevin McLernon and John Pinto for generously donating their retirement gift monies to this year’s scholarship fund.

Following graduation from college, service in the navy, and a short term in Burlington City, Kevin McLernon served faithfully for 30 years as Burlington Township Administrator from 1981 to 2011. As such, he worked directly under the Mayor in supervising all of the activities and functions of township government.

John Pinto entered service in Burlington Township in 1968, and by 1974 was promoted to Superintendent of Public Works, where he carefully directed the daily activities of the roads, sewer, water and recycling center functions in Burlington Township. His service spans 43 years, ending on December 31, 2011.

Our students and community are indeed fortunate to attract such high quality civil servants interested in helping young people further their educational pursuits. Two of this evening’s scholarships are funded by these generous retirees.

Thomas O. HopkinsSince our last graduation ceremony, the entire school community mourns the passing of Mr. Thomas O. Hopkins, Superintendent of the Burlington Township Schools from 1946 to 1977. Mr Hopkins joined the district as as an elementary teacher in the Springside School in 1940. After service in World war II, he returned and served the district until July, 1977, when he retired with his wife to Seaside Park, NJ and lived until his passing in 2011.

During his tenure as superintendent, he helped design and supervise the construction of the Beverly Road School, the Pinewald (later Young) School, the middle school (later the Thomas O Hopkins) School and the original sections of the high school. In short, Mr Hopkins built the foundations of the modern Burlington Township School system. In the 1990’s and early years of this century, the Young and high schools were vastly expanded and the current intermediate and middle schools were constructed.

At this time the entire school community warmly thanks Mr. Thomas O. Hopkins for giving his entire working career for the benefit of the many thousands of young people who have learned and matured during their years here in township.

The Trustees would like to warmly thankMiddle School teacher Ryan Winkelspecht

and Sargent David Brintzinghofferfor organizing a benefit basketball game between

the school faculty and our police department.

Over 280 attended the game and it representeda wonderful example of a great community

functioning together to help our young graduates.

The faculty won the first game of the series.

We are all volunteers dedicated to helping our young graduates further their education

and training, and we think they fully deserve the recognition of their community for

their consistent level of high performance.

You too can help, even if in a small way. We ask you to consider joining our list of

volunteers and help make our 2013 awards even larger!
