The SDC-707 is a Serial Digital Video Corrector that accepts a SMPTE 259M-C input andproduces an output of the same format. It provides the user with real time control overcommon video parameters for the purpose of correcting or enhancing video signals.Familiar and understandable analog terms give the user the traditional look and feel of atraditional analog color corrector. Corrections include gain to total video, color gain, hueshift, brightness adjustments, gamma, white clip and soft clip as well as black clip andstretch. The f'C-.200 is a half-rack wide stand-alone unit that accepts as input the SVGA output of

a Videotek VTM-200 Series On Screen Monitor and provides an output to the SVGA monitor.Under manual control, or by remote command, the FC-200 can capture a single SVGA frameoutput by the VTM-series unit and optionally display it on the SVGA monitor. Thecaptured frame can then be transferred via a serial communications interface to a PC runninga Videotek-provided 32-bit Windows"'application which allows it to be viewed, stored, and/orprinted at the PC. Frame transmissions can be in a monochrome or full color format.

The FC-200 Windows Control Panel software (FC-200WCP) provides a graphical userinterface (GUI) to enable control and communications with an FC-200 Frame Capture unit froma PC running Windows 95"', Windows 98"' or Windows NJ1I'. Through an RS-232 serialconnection, this software enables the FC-200 to manually or automatically capture, save, printand store images from the SVGA output of any VTM family model. Videotek is a leader in Serial Digital Color Correction, Processing and legalizing. These areas include many familiar and

reasonable functions as well as some new ones to video users. 601 video is often assumed to be perfect and can not be degraded

by lengths of cable, DAs and other normal video equipment. While this is basically true, human intervention and production

requirements can demand the capability to modify existing digital video. In the following few paragraphs, we will explain some of

the problems, why they exist, why they are problems and what can be done to solve those problems.

Color Correction

The color correction concept has been around for a very long time, and the basics have not changed. Many users are aware of

color correction that is traditionally employed in film-to-tape transfers. These type of transfers demand the very high-end artistic

functions that are available in only the largest of production houses and telecine bays. The advent of digital television has opened a

requirement to provide, in digital, everything that was available in analog. This requirement is aggravated by the fact that many

digital products just don't have the analogous controls that are available in their analog counterparts. Such is the problem with

video corrections, color alterations, and similar desirable functions. Camera operators can still dial in the wrong color filter, they can

misadjust the lens iris, and producers can always want more (or less) of any amount of video.

Not all color correctors have similar controls. The native format 601 video is encoded in Y, Cb and Cr components. Color

correctors should allow the user to address at least levels and offsets in these formats. Since most users and operators have a

difficult time visualizing the native 601 encoding format, a useful color corrector will allow the user to address the video in a more

familiar format, such as RGB. In the RGB color space, adjustments are more easily conceptualized. An ideal color corrector will

provide the operator controls such as gain and white stretch, black level and black stretch, and gamma (or gray) stretch. We have

added a hue control just to meet the occasional encoded style of solving a particular problem, such as simply shifting the video

towards another color. Other controls to look for include maximum and minimum clips to maintain the transcoded RGB into useable

and viewable levels. All of these controls can then be used to match original video shot by different cameras, or from different

angles or in different lighting conditions. More controls exist to allow for simply artistic functions. look for the ability to make a

sepia tone, or a wash of any particular color and opacity. Make sure that the color controls allow you to remove all color, again

for your own artistic reasons. Finally, for the most subtle color changes, look for the ability to do a real time picture split so both

before and after correction may be viewed simultaneously on one screen.

Control is always an issue. Color correctors should be easily controlled by editors. They should also be able to store internal

memories which, at least, can be triggered by timecode. Internal memories should be both plentiful and capable of user updating

and editing. Not all editors are capable of addressing any color corrector, and so alternate means of control should be available.

look for the ability to trigger a memory via a GPI or via a timecode input. Remote control panels and the ability to address multiple

units via these panels are features which are commonly requested by editors and producers.

LegalizingThere are two basic type of legalizing which may be applied to a 601 serial digital signal. RGB (or Production) legalizing is one

and Encoded (or NTSC or PAL) legalizing is the other. In both cases the whole issue over legalizing is centered on the fact that

each of the three types of color spaces (601, RGB and Encoded) have different allowable colors. 601 has the largest allowable

color space, and that means a user can create and use more colors in 601 than in RGB or in any Encoded format. The user must, if

using 601 as originating video, be aware of the final video distribution format(s). If the video is being transcoded and used in other

color spaces such as RGB in a desk top video or graphics system or released in NTSC or PAL formats, then gamut limiting or

legalizing is an issue which must be addressed.

Put simply, 60 1-based digital video is capable of producing a wider range of colors than RGB, NTSC or PAL formats. When

converting from 60 1-based digital video, some colors might not be acceptable (legal) in RGB, NTSC or PAL formats. We have a
