INTRODUCTION
Originally established by the Government of Kerala as an advancedcentre for medical specialties, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for MedicalSciences and Technology (SCTIMST) metamorphosed into an Instituteof National Importance with the status of a University in 1980 under theDepartment of Science and Technology, Government of India, by an Actof Parliament (Act 52 of 1980). The joint culture of medicine and technol-ogy that the Institute pioneered more than three decades ago has comeof age and gained unprecedented acceptance in India. Imbued with aninclination to venture into less-trodden domains, the Institute focuses onpatient care of high quality, technology development of industrial signifi-cance and health research studies of social relevance. The stress is ondevelopment of facilities less readily available elsewhere in the countrysuch as interventional radiology, cardiac electro physiology, presurgicalevaluation and surgery for epilepsy, microsurgery and deep brain stimu-lation for movement disorders, new biomedical devices and products,evaluation of medical devices to global specifications, new academicprogrammes and global public health networks.
The Institute has three wings – the Hospital, Biomedical Technol-ogy Wing and the Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies.Excellent research and teaching facilities are available at these centres.This uniquely poised Institute has a dedicated team of clinicians, scien-tists and engineers devoted to high quality biomedical research and de-veloping technologies in health care with emphasis on cardiovascularand neurological diseases.The Institute’s missions consist of:· Promote research and development in biomedical engineeringand technology· Deliver high quality patient care in selected specialties andsubspecialties· Develop innovative postgraduate training programs in advancedmedical specialties, and biomedical engineering and technology

· Participate in public health reforms through research, trainingand interventions
The Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology Act,1980 empowers the Institute to sponsor post-graduate programmes inmedical sciences and biomedical engineering and stipulates that themedical degrees, diplomas and other academic distinctions granted bythe Institute shall be recognized qualifications for the purpose of the IndianMedical Council Act and that they shall be included in the First Scheduleto the Act.
COURSES OFFERED
1. POST-DOCTORAL COURSES
Currently, the Institute is offering the following post-doctoral courses: DM(Cardiology), DM (Neurology), DM (Neuroimaging and InterventionalNeuroradiology), DM (Cardiothoracic & Vascular Anaesthesia), DM(Neuroanaesthesia), MCh (Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery), MChVascular Surgery, MCh (Neurosurgery) and Post-Doctoral CertificateCourses in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anaesthesia, Neuroanaesthesia,Cardiovascular and Neuroradiology and Vascular Surgery and Post-doctoral(DM/MCh.) Fellowship.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS FORADMISSION
A. DM COURSES
DM Cardiology and DM NeurologyMD in General Medicine or Pediatrics from an Indian University recognizedby the Institute or Diplomate of the National Board in General Medicine/Pediatrics or any other examination approved by the Institute for thispurpose from time to time.Candidates with MD in Psychiatry from an Indian University recognizedby the Institute or Dip NB in Psychiatry with a minimum of six monthsresidency posting in General Medicine and Neurology during the saidcourse can apply for DM (Neurology).

DM Neuroimaging & Interventional NeuroradiologyMD/DNB in Radiology/Radiodiagnosis
DM Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia:MD/DNB in Anaesthesia or equivalent
DM Neuroanesthesia:MD/DNB in Anesthesia or equivalent.
B. MCh in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery,Vascular Surgery and NeurosurgeryMS in General Surgery from an Indian University recognized by the Instituteor Diplomate of the National Board in General Surgery or any otherequivalent qualification approved by the Institute for this purpose fromtime to time.
C. MCh in Neurosurgery (direct after MBBS - 5 yearcourse)MBBS from an Indian University recognized by the Institute and one yearpost-registration senior residency/senior house surgency in GeneralSurgery from a University/PG Institute/Teaching Hospital recognized bythe MCI/DNB for general surgery postgraduate training.
D. Post-doctoral Certificate Courses:(Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anaesthesia, Neuroanesthesia,Cardiovascular and Neuroradiology, Vascular Surgery) MD/MS Degreein Anesthesia/ Radiology/General Surgery, from an Indian Universityrecognized by the Institute or DNB in Anesthesia/ Radiology/GeneralSurgery, from the National Board or any other examination approved bythe Institute for this purpose from time to time can apply in respectivespecialties.
UPPER AGE LIMIT35 years (as on 1st January 2011), relaxable by 5 years for qualified Ex-service personnel with a service of not less than 5 years, SC/ST andSponsored candidates.

METHOD OF SELECTION (Total 100 marks)1 10 marks for MBBS.2. 15 marks for MD/MS/DNB3. 30 marks for Theory (Written) Entrance Examination4. 30 marks for Departmental Clinical/Practical and Viva Voce5. 15 marks for the Final Interview
Note:a. For calculating the marks for eligibility for admission to these courses,a deduction of one mark shall be made for having failed once in any of theUniversity Examinations. Two more marks will be deducted for the secondfailure in any of the University Examinations. Candidates with more thantwo failures will not be called for assessment.
b. All candidates called for assessment should appear for a theory paperof 90 minutes duration, carrying 100 objective type questions.
c. The minimum pass marks in Theory Examination will be 50%.Candidates scoring less than the minimum prescribed marks will not beconsidered.
d. Out of the candidates who have qualified in the Theory EntranceExamination, a merit list will be drawn up based on the marks obtainedin the Theory Entrance Examination. From the said merit list, candidateswill be selected in the order of merit for further evaluation - clinical, practicaland viva voce in the respective departments. The ratio of candidatesselected for these will be approximately three candidates for each availablevacancy.
e. The candidates for the final interview will be selected in the order ofmerit based on aggregate marks scored for academic performanceincluding theory and departmental clinical/practical and viva-voce.(aggregate of 1,2,3,4 under method of selection marks). The proportion ofcandidates called for the final interview will be two per available seat ineach discipline.

f. Candidates will be notified of their provisional selection immediatelyafter the Entrance Examination. The final announcement will carry thenames of selected candidates, wait-listed candidates, and those eligiblefor Institute scholarship. The number of wait-listed candidates will notexceed that of the selected. Selection will be purely on merit, based onthe method of assessment indicated.
g. A common entrance examination will be conducted for DM and PDCCin Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anaesthesia. Similarly, a common entranceexamination will be conducted for DM and PDCC in Neuroanaesthesia.The candidates successfully passing the final interview will be invited foradmission counselling as per their position in the ranking list. Duringcounselling, the student will be given the choice to select either the DMcourse or the PDCC depending upon the availability of seats.
h. The panel of candidates selected for DM/MCh courses will be valid fora period of six months from 1st January of each year. Any vacancyoccurring before 1st February will be filled from the waiting list. Anycandidate from the waiting list admitted against a vacant seat who fails tojoin on or before January 31st will be admitted to the course only on 1stJuly of that year. All candidates shall, however, undergo the period oftraining prescribed for the course before being permitted to appear for theExamination.
Note:(1) One seat in DM Cardiology is normally reserved for candidateswith MD in Pediatrics or its equivalent qualification. However, in the absenceof suitable candidates, the seat will be filled from among candidates withMD in General Medicine. So also, MD Pediatrics candidates may beadmitted to general seats if found suitable. Students applying for DM

Cardiology, from the Pediatric stream should write the course name asDM CARDIOLOGY (for Pediatric stream)
(2) One seat in MCh. Neurosurgery will be reserved for MBBScandidates with one year senior house surgency (direct admission). Inthe absence of suitable candidates, the seat will be filled among from thecandidates with MS in General Surgery.
(3) Candidates applying for DM Neurology from pediatric streamshould write the course name as DM Neurology (Pediatric stream).

E. POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP (PDF)
The Institute offers one-year Post-doctoral Fellowship (PDF) forthose who have DM/MCh (3-year) or equivalent qualifications. The PDFprovides an excellent opportunity to obtain advanced training in a sub-specialty area. The PDF programs are organized by faculty trained in theconcerned sub-specialty area. In addition to obtaining advanced clinicaltraining, PDF provides opportunities to gain hands–on experience inadvanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and high quality research.The applicant is encouraged to visit the website (www.sctimst.ac.in) ordirectly communicate with respective PDF Program Supervisors listedbelow to gather more details about the program.

Minimum educational qualification for admission
DM/MCh (3 year) or equivalent qualification. Registration with Central/State Medical Council.Application to include bio-data, and a 500 words write-up on the work/project proposed to be done. Institutional grants are available for selectedresearch proposals.
LETTER OF REFERENCE
Applicants for PDF courses are required to submit 2 reference letters insealed envelopes along with the application from specialists working inthe area of application, one of which should be from the last employer/teacher under whom the candidate worked.
Method of selection:
a. Short-listing by the Selection Committee based on the merit of the 500words write-up and reference letters, andb. Discussion and general interview.
2. SPECIALTY NURSING PROGRAMME
The Institute offers two Diploma Courses in Nursing to meet the growingdemand for competent and trained nurses in super specialties. Thesecourses are:
(i) Diploma in Cardiovascular & Thoracic Nursing(ii) Diploma in Neuro-Nursing.
The courses are designed to offer advanced education and clinicalexperience to registered nurses to prepare them as skilled bedside nursesin respective specialties including outpatient, inpatient and intensive careareas and equip them to assume leadership roles in these areas asclinical nursing personnel.
Minimum educational qualifications for admissiona. GNM or B.Sc. Nursing.b. For GNM candidates, one year experience as bedside nurse afterpassing GNM, as on 1st of January 2011

c.Professionally registered as a nurse by any recognized StateNursing Council in India or by Nursing Boards approved by theIndian Nursing Council.
UPPER AGE LIMIT
35 years (as on 1st January 2011), relaxable by 5 years for qualifiedEx-service personnel with a service of not less than 5 years, SC/ST and sponsored candidates.
SUMMARY OF SPECIALTY NURSING COURSES
Cardiovascular & Thoracic Nursing 10 2-years Neuro Nursing 10 2-years
METHOD OF SELECTION
Selection will be strictly on merit on the basis of percentage of marksobtained in the Common Entrance Examination for Cardiovascular &Thoracic Nursing and Neuro Nursing held by the Institute. The candidatesmay indicate their choice of the specialty in the application form. TheEntrance Examination will be held in the Institute.
Sponsored candidates will also go through the selection process but aseparate list of finally selected candidates from among those who qualifyin the Entrance Examination will be put up.
The minimum pass marks in the objective-type written examination (90minutes duration: 100 questions) will be 50% for all. Candidates whohave qualified in the written examination will be short-listed for practicaland interview.

3. DIPLOMA PROGRAMMEDiploma in Cardiac Laboratory Technology
The rapid advances in science and technology have transformedcardiac medical practice from purely clinical to laboratory-orientedcardiology. This has resulted in newer investigative techniques andprocedures both for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.There is a needfor training people as more hospitals strive to update the practice ofcardiology. The training programme will cater to the needs of thosetechnical personnel who will be in increasing demand in the years tocome. The trainees will be attached to the Departments of Cardiologyand Clinical Engineering.
Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology
A variety of electrical and electronic equipments are in use inmodern operation theatres for monitoring anesthesia and for surgicalpurposes. The safety of patients depends largely on the reliable and smoothfunctioning of these equipments. The course is designed to train candidatesin the operation and maintenance of theatre equipment and hospitalpipeline systems. The trainees will be attached to the Departments ofAnesthesia and Clinical Engineering.
Diploma in Neuro Technology
The advent of sophisticated electronic equipment and computershas made neurophysiology a fast developing clinical specialty.Simultaneously, the need for well-trained technicians to maintain anduse these machines has become a necessity. A highly developed epilepsyprogram offers hands on experience in video-EEG monitoring,intraoperative electro-cortocography and stimulation and brain mapping.The trainees will be attached to the Departments of Neurology and ClinicalEngineering.
Diploma in Advanced Medical Imaging Technology
Medical Imaging Techniques have advanced tremendously in thelast decade and have found widespread use in diagnostic applications.

However, the paucity of well-qualified technical personnel has alwaysbeen a problem in exploiting the full potential of these techniques. TheDepartment of Radiology at this Institute is one of the best-equippeddepartments of its kind in the country.
Apart from conventional radiological facilities for outpatientradiography, tomography, myeleography and so on, CT Scan and DigitalSubtraction Angiography (DSA) units are functioning for the last severalyears. A state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging unit and a PACSsystem are also functional. The trainees will be attached to theDepartments of Imaging Sciences and Interventional Radiology, andClinical Engineering.
Diploma in Medical Records Science
In any hospital, regardless of type and size, medical records ofpatients are considered essential for the practice of scientific medicine.In fact, medical records form the very basis of deductive diagnosis. Hence,the discipline of medical records has to be very accurate, specific andspecialized. It is no exaggeration to say that it constitutes the “eyes andears” of the hospital management and clinical faculty. The informationcontained in Medical Records serves as a tool for communicating with allthe health personnel who deal with the care of the patient. The Diploma inMedical Records course injects knowledge and enthusiasm with a viewto developing the medical records system in hospitals. The trainees willbe attached to the Medical Records Section and with the Section ofHospital Administration.
Diploma in Clinical Perfusion
This course is designed to train the candidate to become aPerfusionist who is a blood circulation specialist with a unique role in thefield of cardiac surgery. Cardiac and pulmonary circulation are temporarilybypassed to facilitate a bloodless field, whereby the surgeon can performthe necessary repair inside the heart.
A Perfusionist manages the Heart Lung Machine equipmentthrough which venous blood from the patient is diverted, oxygenated andinfused back to the patient. Mechanical action of heart is temporarilystopped. The Perfusionist is also responsible for hypothermia, totalcirculatory arrest etc. The patient is warmed back and weaned off the

Heart Lung Machine. Student Perfusionist is required to work in theoperation theatre and has to follow aseptic techniques. He/She will begiven clinical and theoretical training in the set up and operation of HeartLung Machine, perfusion management, support devices such as IntraAortic Balloon Pump etc. The trainees will be attached to the Departmentsof CVTS and Clinical Engineering.
Diploma in Blood Banking Technology
Rapid advances in technology have revolutionized bloodtransfusion services and enhanced our knowledge in Transfusion Medicine.This has necessitated thorough selection of donors for donor and recipientsafety during blood donation, extensive serological andimmunohaematological techniques, infectious disease screening,processing of blood into components for optimal usage and proper storageof blood and components. During the training period students will haveample ‘hands on experience’ under expert guidance and supervision. Thereis growing need in the State for training in this specialty owing to acuteshortage of trained personnel. During the training programme, the studentwill have enough opportunity to be familiar with state-of-the-art equipmentand access to computer and library facilities. Training is designed toequip students to meet increased demand for qualified personnel in bloodbanks. The trainees will be attached to the Departments of TransfusionMedicine and Section of Hospital Administration.

The training is strictly full-time and continuous. The candidates at thetime of admission will be provided with a handbook covering the syllabus,training programme and the examination scheme. • Contract service
All students and Senior Residents selected for various programmes arerequired to execute a bond of service for a duration depending upon thelength of the course. The objectives of the Master of Public Health course are:

The material research group has proven record of research towardssynthesis and characterization of biomedical polymers, theircharacterization and testing for biocompatibility to qualify the material formedical applications. The engineering &device development group hassuccessfully developed and commercialized critical products whichinclude blood bag, artificial heart valve, and oxygenator.
Major programs include development of materials for orthopedicand dental applications, cardiovascular device fabrication, drug deliverysystems, nanomedicine, sensors and tissue engineering scaffolds.Biological research focuses on culture and differentiation of adult stemcells for regenerative medicine, in vitro tissue engineering, developmentof bio therapeutics and diagnostic reagents.
Sophisticated analytical equipments are available in the campusfor characterization of materials which include scanning and transmissionelectron microscopes, Raman & FT-Raman spectroscope, atomic forcemicroscope, ICP, X-ray diffraction, micro computerized tomography,

Introduction
Over the last five decades, healthcare delivery has increasinglybecome technology driven - be it diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitationof patients in the hospitals, or the development of new drugs, vaccinesand medical devices. Today India imports almost 80% of the implantsand devices used in our country. As a result, healthcare costs are highand continue to increase. In order to address this issue, a twofold strategyis needed. Firstly, it is required to set up the infrastructure and havetrained human resources for indigenous technology development.Secondly, it is necessary to develop human resources for ensuring efficientand effective utilization of the technology at the healthcare delivery points- i.e., mainly in the hospitals.
The three institutions - IIT Madras, CMC, Vellore, and SCTIMST,Trivandrum, each having a set of unique strengths and facilities, havejoined together in starting two programmes - “M.Tech in ClinicalEngineering” and “PhD in Biomedical Devices & Technology” to addressthe issue of capacity building for reducing India’s dependence on importsof medical devices. A unique feature of these courses is the clinicalattachment with a maximum exposure to the clinical environment. Thisensures that, at the end of the course, the students will be able to interacteffectively with the clinicians, and other medical and paramedical staff inthe hospital resulting in the identification ‘unmet clinical needs’. This isalso expected to trigger further research leading to development ofinnovative indigenous healthcare technology.

(1) M.Tech. (Clinical Engineering)
Aim : To train engineers to manage and ensure safe and effective use oftechnology in hospitals and healthcare delivery settings.Duration : Two and a half years (rotation through all the three institutions).Eligibility : B.E./B.Tech./Recognized four year course; on the basis ofGATE subject (AE, CE, CH, EC, EE, IN, ME,MN, MT, PI, TF, XE) andscore.Selection: Screening test and personal interview.
(2) Ph.D. (Biomedical Devices and Technology)
Aim: *To be leaders in research and development *To be innovators andentrepreneurs in Biomedical Devices TechnologyDuration : According to current requirements of IIT MadrasEligibility: M.E./M.Tech./M.S(Eng.) with the same eligibility conditionsfor IITM PhD entrance/ M.Sc. Physics.Selection : Screening test and personal InterviewHostel : Hostel facilities are available in all the three organizations.

OFF-CAMPUS COURSES AT NATIONAL INSTITUTE OFEPIDEMIOLOGY, CHENNAI
Two off-campus programmes of two year duration are offered atthe National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) Chennai, which is an institutionunder the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

1. MASTER OF APPLIED EPIDEMIOLOGY (MAE)2. MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH (Health services,
Development & Research)Both the programmes commence from July each year.
Duration and course organization
Master of Applied Epidemiology course consists of two parts; oneextends over six months of on-campus training in periods of three monthsto begin with, followed by three contact sessions of one month each atNIE. The other part extend over 18 months, at 3 six- months intervals ina live situation involving planning and execution of epidemiologic projectsof immediate relevance to public health.
Master of Public Health
The students will be offered core public health courses for duration of 15months. They will undergo one elective course for three months offeredby partner institutes of ICMR Partnership for schools of Public Healthand conduct a dissertation project in the following six month period.
Eligibility
Applicants having the following criteria will be eligible to applyfor the course:
· MBBS degree recognized by MCI
· Working in public health, preferably in state or central service or inmedical institutions, sponsored on deputation for two years on full-timebasis
· Three years experience in public health related activities after MBBS
· Age below 40 years. May be relaxed by five years for applicants withdesirable experience

All the applicants are requested to submit one page write-up on “Why Iam interested in the MPH/MAE course “ along with the duly filled-inapplication form.
Course fee and fellowships:
There is no course fee for the candidates sponsored by the state/centralgovernment/Armed forces. For non-sponsored/non-governmentalcandidates, the course fee is Rs.1,00,000/- for two years. ICMR mayoffer some fellowships for the non-sponsored candidates qualifying anexamination on all India -basis.
Method of selection:
A selection committee will evaluate the prospective candidates on thebasis of educational qualifications, professional experience relevant topublic health, entrance examination (for candidates who are non-sponsored/ sponsored by NGOs), one page write-up and interview.Reservation of seats will be as per the Govt. of India norms being followedby SCTIMST. OFF- CAMPUS COURSE AT CMC, VELLORE
An academic program in Bioengineering leading to the degreesof MS (Master of Science in Bio-engineering) and PhD is offered atChristian Medical College, Vellore, Tamilnadu under an off-campus programof Sree Chitra Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum.
The aim of these two-degree programs is to train engineeringgraduates to work in a medical Institution to conduct research anddevelopment that will directly lead to improve healthcare in India.
The Department of Bioengineering at Christian Medical College,Vellore, works closely with several other departments in the Institute andcurrent work ranges across physiological measurement, systemsmodeling, prostheses design, biomechanical analysis, and biomedicalsignal processing.
Lecture and seminar based courses on Instrumentation, ImagingSystems, Physiological Systems, Signal Processing, etc., from part ofthe basic training. Both the MS Bioengineering and PhD are specializedengineering programs with emphasis on research. MS candidates willundertake a research project of one year duration, While PhD candidateswill undertake a substantially larger research problem. Students willinteract closely with at least one of the clinical or basic sciencedepartments to formulate a research question.
These degrees equip individuals to apply quantitative andengineering methods to solve health care problems. Career prospectsinclude academic research and teaching careers as well as R & D in themedical devices industry.Eligibility: All aspiring candidates should have an undergraduate degreein engineering, preferably Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, ComputerScience or equivalent. Doctoral aspirants require a Masters Degree inengineering, and should have some exposure to advanced biology. Aqualifying GATE score is required.

Admissions: Applications to these programs is usually advertised inFebruary, and candidates must apply before the end of April. An interviewof short-listed candidates will be conducted in June to select suitablecandidates.
