EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD First Reading: Acts 10:34a, 37-43 Peter discusses Jesus’ life of preaching and healing. Jesus was crucified, then he rose up and was seen by his chosen witnesses. Peter also mentions the importance of all the disciples bearing witness to what they saw, so that many people would believe in Jesus, and have their sins forgiven through him. Second Reading: Colossians 3:1-4 Paul asserts that we must pay attention to higher realms rather than earthly concerns. Our life is not yet completely known to us, until Christ appears and we are raised to glory in him. Gospel: John 20:1-9 When Mary Magdalene discovered Jesus’ tomb was open, she told Simon Peter and another disciple. They ran to the tomb and Peter went inside. He found the burial wrappings on the ground, with the head covering separate from the rest. The other disciple came in and they believed what they saw, although until then they had not understood the Scripture’s message of Jesus’ resurrection. Bringing the Gospel Home Easter Sunday

John 20:1-9

Reflection for Parents Things aren’t always as they seem. A spilled bottle of

laundry detergent wasn’t mischievous behavior—it was your child’s attempt to surprise you by doing his or her own

laundry. Secrets whispered behind your back weren’t an attempt to hide a wrongdoing. They were an effort to plan a

surprise for you. In today’s Gospel reading, Mary of Magdala’s discovery of the empty tomb did not mean that

Jesus’ body had been stolen—it was evidence that Jesus had risen from the dead! As Christians, we are invited to look

beyond the surface, beyond the obvious, and to search for the deeper meaning—the deeper truth—that God is trying to

reveal in the everyday occurrences of life.

Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family Gather your family together to decorate your family prayer

table for the Easter season. Place upon the table a white cloth, a candle, a Bible, a cross, and signs of the Easter

season such as fresh flowers, an Easter egg, a butterfly, and anything that symbolizes new life to family members. Talk

about ways you can be signs of new life to each other and to neighbors and friends throughout the Easter season. Even the

smallest signs of thoughtfulness and caring can be Good News to those in need of Easter joy.

Discussion Starters: 1. My favorite Easter symbol is ... because... 2. Mary Magdalene recognized Jesus' voice when he called her name. One time I know Jesus called my name when... 3. Someone I will share the Good News of Easter with is ... because ...

PARENTING POINTERS

Sunday April 1: "Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them." (John 20:23) Confession need not be limited to a

priest in the confessional. Confess a mistake you've made to your child. Is there anyone they have hurt and can ask

forgiveness from? Especially consider siblings.

ADULT CONFIRMATION – If you are an adult Catholic who was baptized but never confirmed,

there will be a series of 3 classes during April/May to prepare for the reception of the Sacrament of

Confirmation scheduled at Margaret of Scotland Church on May 20, Pentecost Sunday. Please contact Barbara Kelly at [email protected] or call

410-778-4650 to register.

The weekly encounter with the Holy Spirit begins again on Monday, April 9, from 6:30-8:00 pm in Sacred Heart Parish Hall.

THE SPIRIT AND THE EUCHARIST

“It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”

John 6:63

The Eucharistic liturgy is saturated with the presence of the Holy Spirit. From the moment you decide to go to Mass the

Holy Spirit is active and alive. Sadly, many people don’t experience the Holy Spirit, and attending Mass becomes a chore

for them rather than a life giving encounter with Jesus. In this segment we will look at a few of the many ways that the Holy Spirit is present in the mass that will enable you to encounter

God when you attend the Liturgy.

***** May the blessings of the risen Lord be with all of

you throughout this Easter season.

PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

We welcome D. Howard Paul into the fullness of membership in the Holy Catholic Church. Howard received all three Sacraments of Initiation; Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist, during the celebration of the Vigil Mass this weekend. Congratulations Howard!

First Holy Eucharist – Eleven of our young people are preparing to receive Jesus in Holy Eucharist for the first time this spring. We ask you to select one of their names from the bowls at the doors of the church and pray for them as they continue their journey to the table of the Lord.

P.R.E.P. classes resume on Sunday, April 8th. The monthly Journey of Faith session for parents is also scheduled for April 8th. The topic is “Revelation – how does God reveal God’s self to us?”

YOU ARE INVITED When: Saturday, September 29, 2018

What: Rise Against Hunger Meal Packaging Event – A joint project of

Sacred Heart Parish and Christ United Methodist Church

Our parish has pledged to raise $1,500.00. As of March 22, 2018, we have collected $411. This is a great start! Each meal costs .29 cents so a donation of just $29 will cover the cost of 100 meals. The more money we collect, the more meals we can

package and send to hungry people around the world.

Donations for this project can be placed in the regular weekly collection. Please put all donations in

a separate envelope and mark them “Rise Against Hunger”. If you are writing a check, please make it out to Sacred

Heart Parish, with Rise Against Hunger in the memo line.

If you would like to help with fundraising, volunteer for the meal packaging event or have questions, contact Ann Anderson at

410-778-4243 or [email protected] or visit the website at www.riseagainsthunger.org.

Christ United Methodist Church is hosting a ”Concert of Sacred Music” on Sunday, April 15,

2018 at 4pm at 401 High Street, Chestertown. There will be a love offering taken up at this concert to benefit the Rise Against Hunger Meal packaging event. All are

invited to attend. Bring a friend!

The Third Annual Sacred Heart/Christ United Methodist Church Yard Sale is being planned for

Saturday, June 23, 2018 at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall. As you are doing your spring cleaning, please set aside

items you no longer want or need (no clothing or electrical appliances, please). If you have items to donate and/or would like to have your donations picked up, contact Ann Anderson. Last year’s

yard sale raised over $1000, thanks to the generosity of Sacred Heart/St John parishioners.

OFFERTORY TOTALS FOR THE WEEKEND OF MARCH 24/25 WILL BE IN NEXT

WEEKEND’S BULLETIN.

2018 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL – “Disciples of Christ, Witnesses of Faith”

In the Resurrection of Jesus we find hope in the prospect of everlasting life in heaven. But to obtain eternal life, we must

accept the Lord’s invitation to follow Him by imitating His love and compassion for others.

During the weekend of April 14 & 15, our parish will

participate in the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal – a campaign conducted each year throughout the Diocese of Wilmington.

Funds generated through the Appeal help provide critical financial support to nearly forty pastoral, charitable and

educational programs and ministries.

As Christian stewards we are called to a lifelong conversion to the ways of Jesus. Each of us is asked to examine the blessings we have received from God and to discern how best to use them for others. We do this cheerfully and sacrificially and with faith

in God’s love for us, knowing that He will provide for our earthly wants.

You can learn more about

the Annual Catholic Appeal by reading the campaign insert in this

week’s Dialog or visiting the diocesan website at www.cdow.org; click

“Giving” then “Annual Catholic Appeal.”

ELECTRONIC GIVING: It is possible to make your weekly financial commitment to the Parish using Electronic Funds Transfer.

We are encouraging everyone to consider using this contribution method. Contact Senta Burton with any questions at 410-778-3160, or

[email protected]. Sign up forms are available at the doors of the Church.
