Scraps and Pieces Dixie Quilt Guild, St. George, Utah 84771-2812 October 2016 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE 2016 IN REVIEW It is hard to believe, but it is time for our DQG Annual Meeting on October 8, 2016 as a part of our Gen- eral Meeting. Since I will be at my daughters wedding, I thought I would share with you my YEAR IN REVIEW via our Newsletter. During my time as President, many wonderful quilters have worked together to help the Dixie Quilt Guild continue to go forward. I would like to mention to you some of the things in which we have been involved. First on my list is the new and improved Website. It has been two years since I first began the pro- cess. My thanks to Karen Peterson for carrying on with what I started as the website chair and making all the tweaks that were needed. Working with a new provider with a new system has not been an easy task. The result you will see in the presentation at the October 8 th meeting. We have been occupants of the facilities of the Electric Theatre for a full year. Since January the theatre has housed our monthly meetings, our teaching program and our Board meetings. This has become our home for DQG. We hope you enjoy the padded seats, the excellent sound system and the good view of the Show-N-Tell quilts. Once again we have renewed our 401-(C) 3 tax status which makes us tax exempt for all activ- ities in which we participate, giving us a savings of our funds. We are in the process of applying for the Washington County RAP Tax funds which will become available in 2017. My thanks to Viola Bodrero for her assistance in gathering the data and making the application for the DQG. We have been successful in reinstating our National Teacher program for the DQG. We began with Josephine Keasler as our first teacher. Many participated and made some really clever quilts using the Judy Niemeyer designs. In November we are anticipating our second National Teacher, Noriko Endo from Japan. She will also give us a Trunk Show at our November 12 th meeting. I give my thanks to Teryl McKnight for her organization of this wonderful learning experience right here in our own home setting. The second annual Sew Simple Retreat in Springdale was a grand success. There was more space for our tables and we had three days of quilting fun. Sue Gilliam was the chairperson and we were grateful for her organization. It made the work of the committee much easier. Our Philanthropy group has been busy throughout the year, donating quilts in our community to many groups who can use a little love through our quilts. Thanks to Susan Mapston for assist- ing Ruth McIntire to organize the volunteers who donate time and efforts to make these beauti- ful quilts. There is now a display at the Senior Center showcasing many of the quilts. Monthly Workshops have been a huge success with Kaye Reese as our Chair. The varied subjects have had something for most all interests. I hope you have taken advantage of these free classes, where you can enhance your quilting knowledge. Not your normal Round Robin Block of the Month activity has been a Border of the Month this year. Everyone started with a center focus square and added borders as instructed by Margie Black. They will be displayed at the Quilt Show in April, as a group. The Kaffe Fassett Challenge Table Runner will be shown and voted on at the November meeting. It has been fun to see the creative ways our Chair Janice Howick has been able to get our at- tention. We look forward to seeing all the colorful entries from all of you. Candace Miller has served as our Program Chair this year. We have been treated to a variety of programs that have increased our knowledge and given us encouragement in our quilting. I saved the best for last. Our Singing Membership chair, Bruce Bussey has both entertained and made us laugh. We have learned about ourselves through his clever way with words. Thanks Bruce! Thanks to all of you as you have supported our Board of Directors and participated in the 2016 Dixie Quilt Guild year. Wanda Bublik, President 1

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE 2016 IN REVIEW It is hard to believe, but it is time for our DQG Annual Meeting on October 8, 2016 as a part of our Gen-eral Meeting. Since I will be at my daughter’s wedding, I thought I would share with you my YEAR IN REVIEW via our Newsletter. During my time as President, many wonderful quilters have worked together to help the Dixie Quilt Guild continue to go forward. I would like to mention to you some of the things in which we have been involved.

First on my list is the new and improved Website. It has been two years since I first began the pro-cess. My thanks to Karen Peterson for carrying on with what I started as the website chair and making all the tweaks that were needed. Working with a new provider with a new system has not been an easy task. The result you will see in the presentation at the October 8

th meeting.

Once again we have renewed our 401-(C) 3 tax status which makes us tax exempt for all activ-ities in which we participate, giving us a savings of our funds.

She will also give us a Trunk Show at our November 12

th meeting. I give my thanks to Teryl McKnight for her organization of this wonderful learning

experience right here in our own home setting. The second annual Sew Simple Retreat in Springdale was a grand success. There was more

space for our tables and we had three days of quilting fun. Sue Gilliam was the chairperson and we were grateful for her organization. It made the work of the committee much easier.

Our Philanthropy group has been busy throughout the year, donating quilts in our community to many groups who can use a little love through our quilts. Thanks to Susan Mapston for assist-ing Ruth McIntire to organize the volunteers who donate time and efforts to make these beauti-ful quilts.

It has been fun to see the creative ways our Chair Janice Howick has been able to get our at-tention.

Wanda Bublik, President

Scraps and Pieces October 2016

The September workshop saw eleven Dixie Quilt Guild members busily creating a flo-ral wool applique mini-purse with very strange embroidery stitch names such as, pistil stitch, drizzle stitch, bullion stitch. Who thinks up these names??? You will be able to view their handiwork as finished projects at a future show and tell. The October workshop, Basic Beading 101, as Quilt Embellishments, will be conduct-ed by Janet Passek and friends. The signup sheet will be continuing at the October 8 Guild Meeting. Class size will be no less than 10, nor more than 25, with a waiting list. A small supply kit will be made available for $5 to be picked up at the October 8, 2016 Guild Meeting. An additional supply list will be sent out separately to those who sign up for the workshop. As of this date, fourteen Guild members have signed up for this workshop, so there’s still room for more. NEWS FLASH November’s workshop will be conducted by Ruth Ann Adams and Wanda Bublik. They will be team teaching this workshop which will now allow for twenty Guild members to attend. Multiple landscape quilting techniques for a holiday themed wall hanging will be taught in the class. There will be a kit for the class for $25, which will be available for pickup at the November 12, 2016 Guild Meeting. A signup sheet will be available at the October 8 Guild Meeting and will include a waiting list. Workshops are held at the St. George Senior Center, 245 North 200 West, St. George, UT 84790. Let’s Get to Know . . . Doreen Wells Our featured quilter this month is Doreen Wells, who moved to St. George in 2014, and joined the Dixie Quilt Guild in 2015. How many years have you been quilting? One and a half years, but I didn’t know what I was doing until I took a beginning quilting class last fall. Since taking the beginning quilting class in October of 2015, I have pieced 5 quilts and made 6 bags/totes. The first quilt is from the class and is for personal use. The second quilt was a Quilt of Valor for a veteran. Quilts 3 and 4 were for two of my grandchildren and the latest is from a BOM kit I purchased in 2000 from Hancock Fab-rics. It has been a challenge since the fabric is no longer available and all the pieces were pre-cut. It had to be perfect (well, almost!!) and it turned out great. Haven’t yet decided who is getting this latest quilt. What is your favorite quilting technique? I really enjoy all aspects, but my most favorite is piecing. Tell us about your most challenging quilt, and why. The second quilt was the most challenging because several people, with different skill levels, had cut and pieced the Quilt of Valor blocks. So, when we were putting the blocks together, it wasn’t working out. Basically, I took almost everything apart and put it back together. But I was determined not to waste the fabric, and I loved the pat-tern, so, it was a good learning experience for me. Have you taught any quilt classes? No!! I’m a beginner. Have you entered any judged/non-judged shows, and/or won any quilt ribbons? No. What type(s) of quilting technique would you like to learn? Currently learning Quilt Smart and will be learning applique later this fall. Are you a member of a sewing group? Yes Something that few people know about me: Gardening is my favorite past-time, but quilting is quickly catching up.

MOM WAS RIGHT When I was 9 or 10 years old my parents took my brother and me to Boston. Dad had some conference thing and mom envisioned a few days of culture immersion with Jon and me. One place on this tour was the home of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I still love his epic poem, Evangeline, and have fond memories of the visit. Another stop, that didn’t go quite so well, was to the Museum of Fine Arts. There was an exhibit by someone whose work mom was so excited to see. I don’t remember the painter’s name or anything he painted, except for one piece. A massive, 8 feet by 10 feet, canvas. Painted white. With a thin red stripe, top to bottom, slightly off center. I offered my opinion, as only a child can, loud enough for everyone to hear, “I did better than that in kindergarten!” Embarrassed doesn’t begin to cover it. But mom, being a parent, chose to make it a teachable moment. She made me stand there and look at that painting until I could truly find something, anything, to appreciate. I think I finally admired the way the red line faded into the white canvas. Two months after my mom passed, my dad and I went to her guild’s quilt show. We wandered around admiring the quilts, pleased that some of her things were in a special display. Dad and I have similar taste in quilts, Baltimore Albums, Bargello, bright colors and landscapes are the eye candy of choice. But we like to look at everything. Well, imagine our surprise when we stopped to look at one entitled, ”Raccoons in my attic”. I was attracted to the shiny, pearly white beads on the raccoons. Reading the info card, I discovered, to my horror, that the beads were meant to be maggots! Next to that quilt was one with a tree , mossy ground and some flowers. Looking closer, the ground looked disturbed and had traces of red in it. This quilt was illustrative of burying the placenta after her daughter was born. Ewww… Then Mom’s edict came to mind. Someone worked hard to create this art, and it means something to them. While I might not especially like it, I should take the time to find something to admire. Maggots and a placenta. It took some time, but the quilting on a single color of brown fabric made it look like a tree trunk. That’s impressive. And those pretty pearly beads add-ed such light to the dark and dreary attic. Art is very personal and quilts are art. Even though you might not want it on your wall, respect the artist. Take the time to find something to admire. You might find that you broaden your horizons and begin to like something different. And that, ac-cording to mom, is one of the purposes for art. And…

Mom was right. K.P. Ed
