Thank you
The village hall committee would like to offer our
sincere thanks to Christine MacDonald for giving
accommodation to the Crash Banjos band
following their performance at the recent shinty
6’s dance. The committee are very grateful of this
generous gesture which helped the hall committee
to raise a healthy total.
Scourie Hall committee.
Scourie Calendar The camera club has ceased to exist due to a
shortage of interested people. We do hope to have
an “occasional” evening next winter. I will
however continue to produce a calendar for the
village, during autumn and winter. I will be
looking for local pictures, in a landscape format.
These can be edited, but preferably not cropped
(the pictures need to be at least 300 pixels per inch
for calendar printing). This is open to everyone,
and the final pictures need to be selected by the
end of August. So if you want another calendar
this year, start selecting your best shots. Pictures
can be taken anywhere from Loch Assynt to Loch
Eribol, and out to Merkland on the Lairg road. Or
they can by something that will be of interest to the
area. Pictures can be or on a memory stick, or
emailed (in a low resolution initially) and once
selected for the calendar, I will contact you to get
the higher resolution picture for printing.
It’s our calendar, let’s make it extra special this
year.
Please e-mail pictures to [email protected]
Footpath leaflets
Glenda Cairncross has recently done a re-print of
the footpath leaflet that is freely available to
visitors and locals. There are also two “Gaelic in
the landscape” leaflets, currently paid for by “Am
Parbh”, the local gaelic group (who have no funds
left either). These benefit the community by
encouraging people to enjoy our fabulous walks
and countryside. However, there is a cost involved
(£558 for 2,500 leaflets), which has been covered
by the Maldie burn fund this time. This funding
cannot be guaranteed, so the Development
company has decided to manage a fund for future
leaflet printing. We invite local businesses, Hotels,
Guest houses, B&B’s, and anyone else to
contribute to this fund. Please contact Pete Tuck to
make a donation.

Unapool near Kylesku with an established Café, Shop
and Exhibition known as The Rock Stop. It is an
excellent location on the shore of Loch Glencoul close

2015 and after licensing to a local business in 2016 will
be run in 2017 by NW Highlands Geopark Trading

have a welcoming personality and be able to understand
the needs of visitors, sharing knowledge of attractions,
accommodation, events and services throughout the
Geopark. Some business experience in catering and/or

The North West Highlands Geopark hosted
Professor Ian Parsons, Professor of Mineralolgy
from Edinburgh Unviersity at the Rock Stop on
Friday 30 July. Attendees enjoyed tea, coffee and
cake as well as Professor Parson’ fascinating talk
on ‘Weird Assynt, Britain’s Rarest Rocks’.
The Geopark’s next talk looks to be equally
interesting: Dr Alex Brasier of Aberdeen
University will talk about Fossils of complex life
in rocks formed in Scotland’s most ancient lochs.
One billion years ago world-renowned sediments
of the Torridonian Supergroup were deposited in
rivers and lakes. These sediments are particularly
important because they contain microscopic fossils
that are thought to include some of Earth’s oldest
terrestrial complex life. The microfossils are
preserved in three-dimensions, providing
remarkable insights into early life beyond the sea
around 1 billion years ago. Clues and evidence
used to deduce the ancient environments and
remarkable stories recorded in these rocks will be
presented and discussed.
Dr Brasier’s talk will take place at the Rock Stop,
Unapool, IV27 4HW on Friday 28 July at 7pm.
Adults £5, children free. For more information

June Weather
The new weather station has been working well, and I’ve had several positive communications about the
information provided on the web-site.
However, I can only record, and not control the weather! June has been a bit of a disappointment, with cold,
wet and windy weather. The rainfall was 78.6 mm, with 13.8 mm on 24th. There were 8 days where no rain
was recorded. Temperatures ranged from 22.7 deg C on 21st to 4.3 deg C on 8th. The overall average was 12.1
deg C. The highest wind speed was a gust of 34.9 mph at 6:22 on 28th, and an average of 6.8 mph,
predominantly from the SSE. The barometer averaged 995 mb, with a high of 1011 on 20th, and a low of 981
on 6th. Solar radiation reached a high of 226.4 W/m2 on 2nd, with an average of 127.4. UV reached 961.6
uW/cm2 on the 4th, and an average of 618.8.
I am recording at 10 minute intervals giving 144 readings per day, although the website is updated every 15
seconds! All the information can be found on the Scourie website under information, or on the
Wunderground website, www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=INORTH149.
