‘Moonlight, River Tweed’ by John Nelson

Returning To Arisaig John NelsonPink Azalea by John Nelson

JOHN Nelson Studio Gallery is in the historicalScottish Borders’ town of Selkirk. Selkirk iswhere Sir Walter Scott presided over hisSheriff Court, now a museum.

The gallery is in West Port in a listed building with ashop on the ground floor - John’s studio and gallery. On the first floor - his living and dining area alsoserves as a gallery, allowing customers to viewpaintings in a homely setting. The studio and galleryare open 7 days a week, but do close occasionallywhen both he and his wife are away. Therefore, it is agood idea to telephone beforehand, which also addsthe perk of having a cup of fresh coffee ready for you.

There is a constant rotation of paintings within thestudio and gallery, as John’s work regularly goes outto galleries throughout the UK.

The gallery sells his distinctive colourful paintingsplus his beautifully executed pen and ink drawings. The gallery also offers a selection of limited editionsigned art prints of John’s work as well as greetingcards. So there should be something for everyone.

Subject matter includes landscapes and seascapesbased on his love of the north west coast of Scotlandas well as the Border area. Recently his concernabout the effects of global warming has led topaintings of flora and fauna which could be lost.

John says, “I produce paintings which, I hope, encapsulate my natural joie de vivre and love ofcolour. Always suspicious of the archetypical, I workdirectly onto the canvas with no preparatory drawing, yet something emerges which I follow and shapeintuitively. Ideas for my paintings come from a varietyof sources although I am particularly drawn to thenatural forms of land and sea.”

HIGH ST. GALLERY’S ARTIST PROFILE

DAVY BROWN

Paddy’s Milestone by Davy Brown

HIGH St. Gallery’s proprietors, Maureen Briggsand Richard Ross, have had a strong andfruitful relationship with Davy Brown for thepast ten years, although their personal tiesreach back to their shared time together atGlasgow School of Art some forty years ago.Davy’s work represents perfectly the kind ofpowerful, substantive painting with whichthey identify personally and upon which thegallery’s reputation has been built.

Davy Brown was born in Kilmarnock in 1950 andstudied at Glasgow School of Art between 1968-1972. He had his first solo exhibition in Glasgow in1971 at the Citizen’s Theatre. From 1972-73 hestudied at Moray House College, Edinburgh. In 1975he won a scholarship from the Institute of CulturalAffairs, Chicago.

When Davy returned from his travels he taught inKilmarnock and had exhibitions in various galleries inScotland and in Belgium. In 1988 he becameprincipal teacher of art at Douglas Ewart High Schoolin Newton Stewart until 2002 and continued to haveone-man shows in Scotland and England. He gave upteaching in 2002 to paint full-time.

Davy’s recent work demonstrates his immense loveof landscape. Like the Glasgow Boys and the ScottishColourists he prefers, whenever possible, to work enplein air, which, he feels, gives him a closer, intuitive

understanding of his subject matter. His work hasdeveloped over the years from his early works, withtheir overtones of abstractionism to something, whichat first glance, may look more traditional andrepresentational. Inherent in his painting is the samelove of the application of paint, the bravura use ofexpressive brushwork and the forceful use of colourwhich immediately brings to mind, once again, theColourists. In his recent paintings we can witnessDavy’s delight in the use of vibrant pigmentation withan almost Fauve-like palette of astringent reds, citrusyellows and acidic greens as well as the employmentof a broader tonal range than utilised before. He is apainter at the peak of his profession.

AFTER realising his love of art at school, PeterLuti went on to make it his life by studyingCeramics at Duncan of Jordanstone College ofArt, Dundee, and Goldsmiths College, London. He then progressed into lecturing beforeeventually finishing his teaching career asHead of Expressive Arts at Glasgow University.

Influenced by the “landscape around me, especiallythe diversity of the Scottish terrains as there is alwayssomething new to focus on, explore and develop,”Peter is mainly inspired by many fellow contemporaryScottish Artists, “I really like the range of workproduced by Ian Elliot, Peter King and Fiona Ross...alot of their pieces are inspirational.”

He describes his work as “simplified, semi-abstract,which doesn’t really fall into a particular artisticstyle”. But his style of a heavily textured applicationprior to the addition of colour is a technique thatPeter has made his own: “I have developed it over afew years and have yet to see it in other artists’ work. The depth of texture is so important to the finalpieces,” and in the future he hopes to “keepdeveloping the application and technique that I use,and strive to improve with each piece.” This process isone of his favourite things about being a full timeworking artist and his driven approach to his workmeans that he has no real favourite piece of his ownas he sees “each as an individual challenge.”

SCOTTISH ARTIST: BLAIR THOMSON

Blair Thomson

Where and what did you study?

I studied Fine Art: Drawing and Painting atGlasgow School of Art.

How did you find the transition fromstudent to much sought-after artist?

With hind-sight it should have been dauntinglydifficult but just happened somehow as I was sofocused on making new work, exhibiting it androaming coastlines gathering ideas and sketching.

How would you describeyour painting style?

The inkworks use fresh, confident mark makingwith Fude brushes to simplify and accentuate theessence and impact of a chosen structure or place.Fluidity and painterly movement in contrast withsuffused, open areas in the oils create impact andliveliness. Most pieces become semi-abstract.

ARTIST PROFILEEVEN before graduating in 2002 from GlasgowSchool of Art, Blair Thomson was a committedpainter recognised at the Royal GlasgowInstitute with double prizes in 2001, and hadalready exhibited at the likes of the GlasgowArt Fair.

With a sell out degree show to help him, his paintingsquickly became highly collectable achieving numerouscorporate and private commissions in the UK, US andbeyond. This was most likely due to the bold coloursand painterly style combined with an atmosphere criticshave described as mysterious and inspirational with ‘anirresistible Zen-like calm’.

He paints in his large studio most days, sometimesworking on the floor or on tables, from studies ofisolated piers in Japanese ink, to oils charting openskies and even the rhythmic structure of telecomtowers! Several visits to Japan have shaped his outlookas well as his marks. Last summer he exhibited therewith Wakabayashi, a 90-year-old calligrapher, who hasbeen teaching him. In 2008 he was given the honourof becoming the youngest member of the RGI counciland selection/hanging team for their large annualexhibition.

What excites you most about paintingand creating artwork?

The freedom of expression with a direct responseto the world around us. Also just splashing somepaint, experimenting and seeing what results!

Who or what influences you?Where do you take inspiration from?

Most of my inspiration comes not from otherpainters but from walks, travels andpoetry/philosophy, such as haiku master MatsuoBasho and Scottish poet Kenneth White. Also,Photographer Thomas Joshua Cooper and painterJohn Virtue are both making powerfulmonochrome work that really connects.

Having spent some time in Japan recently, how did this inspire you artistically?

I realised when I arrived I didn’t have enoughwork for the show with 90-year-old calligrapherWakabayashi so I just had to get outside paintingand make things work. This old master told me tocarve stamps for myself then for him, so beingpropelled into this new artistic and socialenvironment was a great inspiration, as were theplaces journeyed to. Or maybe the greatest wasseeing him sign up for his next show in threeyears time!

What have you got planned for theforthcoming year and where can ourreaders see and buy your work?

I’m preparing large oil paintings for an opencontemporary exhibition in Uozu, Japan in Maywhich I am invited to. One condition is that I mustattend so I’m hoping to learn more calligraphyand make new work whilst there. Currently I havenew pieces in several galleries such as John GreenFine Art, scotlandart.com and the Billcliffe Gallery(all in Glasgow), Kilmorack Gallery (Beauly),Morningside Gallery (Edinburgh) and SophieMontgomery Gallery (London).

IVOR SEXTON

The Match Girl by Ivor Sexton

IVOR loved to paint and draw as soon as hecould hold a brush or pencil. As an illustrativegraduate from Portsmouth College of Art, hemoved to London to further his career as anillustrator and has worked on projects withFrench and Saunders, Ruby Wax and SimonMayo.

Now living and working as a full-time artist inDumfries, Ivor has established an internationalfollowing with works regularly commissioned bycollectors and is now one of Park Gallery’s top sellingartists.

His source of inspiration is wide and varied, frompeople, events, music, film and his love of Da Vinci’swork with religious and iconic art influencing his artsince he began painting. He creates images that tell astory, leaving clues for the viewer to find and hispaintings are often full of symbolism and subtledetail. They have a narrative to them and the viewercan decide what is happening within the frame.Every person who views his work will have a differingperspective of what the ‘sitter’ is feeling, thinking oremoting - this is his intention.

PARK GALLERY’S ARTIST PROFILE #2

MARTIN EVANS

MARTIN Evans is a self taught sculptor, havingstudied Industrial Design at college. Working inthe pottery industry for many years, figurativesculpture was undoubtedly his first love andhe recently returned to what he started out todo; creating original one-off sculptures.

Martin combines form, line and texture with thesurface of the clay reflecting the inner emotion of thefigure and hopefully creating a harmonious whole. His figures are not meant to be perfect depictions ofthe human form, they are designed to express andreflect emotions felt by the observer.

He is inspired by a fleeting gesture, a look or a halfturn in a pose that he wants to capture in the form ofa sculpture. He prefers to leave the sculpturesunglazed and uncoloured, letting the natural colour ofthe clay speak for itself and is interested in the patinaclay gains over time as the sculpture becomes anentity in its own right and telling its own life story.

A recent addition to Park Gallery’s portfolio ofartists, his launch collection was speciallycommissioned by Park Gallery owner, DavidJohnstone.
