HNC Garden Design

HNC Horticulture

Course Overview

Throughout the course you will develop the knowledge and skills required to enter the garden design profession. You will gain competence in the wide range of skills needed by practising designers, including communication with clients and other professionals and organising and managing design and construction projects. You will develop both hands-on horticultural knowledge and refined design skills, including graphics, surveying and planting design. Modules include Design Process and Composition in the Landscape, Horticultural Practices, Plant Growth and Development, and Plant Recognition and Use.

Academic Progression

Upon successful completion of this course, students may apply to join year 2 of SRUC’s HND Garden Design, or BSc/BSc (Hons) Garden and Greenspace Design courses.

Course Overview

Throughout the course you will develop knowledge of the fundamentals of horticulture and an awareness of the different sectors of the industry including nursery production, maintenance of gardens and green-space and plant retailing. You will develop your practical skills and your underpinning knowledge of plants and their cultivation. You will learn about Plant Identification, Plant Uses, Soil Management, Plant Protection, Business Management, Nursery Production and Plant Physiology. Practical work will include horticultural techniques for plant propagation and the growing on of plants and garden maintenance.

Academic Progression

Upon successful completion of this course and depending on their module choices, students may apply to join Year 2 of the HND Horticulture, HND Horticulture with Plantsmanship, or HND Garden Design.

Alternative entry qualifications, such as a related National Certificate, are also accepted. Applicants with a mature attitude who are seeking a change in career will be assessed individually. Generally, applicants to HNC courses must demonstrate satisfactory literacy and numeracy along with Higher level study.
