Sources – Sampling of WER’s Research• Robinson Township: Store Ledger ~1837 - ~1842. Synopsis: A ledger for a country store near the Montour Church (possibly)

operated by the Guy's. Riddle found this in the Montour Presbyterian Church's files when he reviewed the Session Minutes in approx. 1975. Subsequent enquires/searches have indicated that it has been lost. Contains Riddle's review notes which record a host of names and transactions associated with them. Also contains a subsequently-prepared index of the names appearing in the notes and a sampling of entries (less than 10% that mention Ewing's or Riddle's).

• Mary Agnes EWING Ancestors, 15 Feb 2005, report prepared for Mary Elizabeth Riddle, Newfane, VT. Synopsis: A report prepared for William E. Riddle's family to help them understand the heritage and life of his paternal grandmother, Mary Agnes Ewing. Contains ancestry information and discussions of the parallels between the evolution of the Riddle family and the social changes in the Robinson Run area west of Pittsburgh.

• "Robinson Township, Allegheny County Pa. Tax List 1814," Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 26, No. 2, pp. 30-33 (Fall 1999). Synopsis: "A list of all the Taxable persons of the age of Twenty-one years and upwards Residing within the Township of Robinson in the county of Allegheny with their respective occupations." Serendipitously found by Riddle misfiled within the Special Collections Section at the Carnegie Library, Pittsburgh. Transcription augmented with a simple percentage analysis of the occupations and annotations.

• Analysis: William Ewing, Grandson of Squire James Ewing, 12 Jul 2005. Synopsis: An analysis of data from Riddle, Ardinger, Madjesia Ewing and primary documents (Wills, other legal documents, etc.) regarding the birth, death and marriages of William Ewing (1810-1875). A major focus is on identifying his wives and the dates of his marriages.

• Family Group Census Profiles, 30 Jun 2005. Synopsis: Family group profiles based on multiple decades of census records from 1790 to 1880, inclusive. The focus is primarily on Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, families. The profiles are used to specify otherwise missing birth/marriage/death date ranges, refine existing ranges and identify inconsistencies and issues.

• Montour Presbyterian Church: Cemetery Census Compilation. William E. Riddle: Santa Fe, New Mexico; 24 June 1998. Synopsis: A compilation of cemetery readings and genealogical records for the Montour Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Robinson Run, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania. The primary source was the lot-by-lot records prepared by Jane McCandless. Additional sources were: Montour Cemetery Maps, Fife & Weaver's 1937 Records, Churchill & Thomas' record of soldiers, and Powelson's Records. Provides information sufficient to locate graves in the cemetery. Contains birth/marriage/death date information. Also contains information about inconsistencies among the data from the various sources. Does not contain much inscription information; but this information does appear in the lot-by-lot records developed by Jane McCandless.

• Montour's Sunday School 1875-1876 - "The Superintendent's Condensed Record" ... and ... Montour's Sunday School 1879-1880 . Synopsis: Sunday School records for the periods 1875-1876 and 1879-1880 for the Montour Presbyterian Church. Notes 1975-00-00:0003 gives notes from a review of these records by William Riddle in approx. 1975.

event at the Union Presbyterian Church, Robinson Township, Pennsylvania, 18 Jul 1998.

• Betty J. Durbin Carson and Doris M. Durbin Wooley. Our Ewing Heritage with Related Families. Heritage Books, Inc.: 1540E Pointer Ridge Place, Bowie, MD 20716; 1995. Synopsis: A compilation of information on the history of the Ewing Clan and several U.S. emigrant families. Little information on the Ewings who migrated to Southwestern Pennsylvania (pgs. 720-723). What is provided is "misplaced" -- it appears at the end of the Chapter on Henry Ewing of Chester Co -- and largely just repeats what appears in the Allegheny and Washington Co turn-of-the-century commemorative histories. Chapter 35 provides a comprehensive list of birth and marriage records for many counties in many states. This list comes from "LDS IGI files and Automated Archives Marriage Disks."

• Mark Freeman. Descendants of Robert Walker (b. circa 1610), n.d. Synopsis: Descendancy chart harvested from the internet approx. 1998.

• Emma Leila Glass. History of the Glass Family, 1744-1924. self: n.p.; circa 1925. Synopsis: This family history is primarily used to confirm and supplement data concerning the Walker and McCurdy families. William E. Riddle's copy of this family history (Pamphlet 0017) contains notes about births, marriages and deaths after 1924.

• Sharon Lee Dewitt Kraynek. Allegheny County, Pa. Cemetery Records: Forest Grove Cemetery, Sharon Community Presbyterian Cemetery, Highland Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Clossen Press: Apollo, Pennsylvania; 1982. Synopsis: One of many volumes recording the interments within cemeteries in Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania, this volume including burials at Forest Grove Cemetery in McKee’s Rock.

• Jerry Leeper. Andrew Walker (1710-1762) Descendant Report, circa 1997. Synopsis: Annotated four-generation journal created by Leeper and passed on to Riddle by Russ McGregor 13 Jan 1997.

• Jane McCandless. Montour Presbyterian Church Cemetery Records, n.d. Synopsis: Circa 1950, Jane McCandless prepared an extensive, lot-by-lot, census of the cemetery. Each Lot Sheet indicates the size of the lot, the name(s) of the lot's owners, and information about the purchase of the lot and payments for perpetual care. The Sheets also often include notes about: inscriptions and their legibility; the presence, absence, condition, and position (e.g., lying down) of gravestones; and plants, trees and scrubs in and near the lot. Some of the Lot Sheets include additional information such as: epitaphs; relationships among the people interred within the lot or other lots; transcriptions of relevant documents, for example, wills, obituaries and death certificates; burial dates; data from session and cemetery superintendent records; and information provided by family members. Leona Scott (Oakdale, Pennsylvania) has the original Notebooks. Riddle has a complete copy. Many of the items appearing in the records (Lot Sheets, obituaries, Will transcriptions, etc.) are cited separately.

• Russ McGregor. Descendants of James Walker, circa 1998. Synopsis: Annotated descendancy chart distributed by McGregor at the Pioneer Days event at Union United Church in approx. 1998.

• Frank Powelson. Founding Families of Allegheny Co. self published; 1942. Synopsis: Powelson prepared several genealogical compilations. His major reports reflect information from Wills and his reading of the Montour Church Cemetery. In his cemetery reading, he lists birth/death dates and husband/wife relationships which are more exact than be obtained by reading the tombstones, so it's probable that he used data from other sources.

• Leona C. Scott, James Strunk, Otto Person, William Tidball, Charles Puhlman, R. Donald Scott and Bertha Person. Bicentennial History of Union Presbyterian Church, Robinson Township, Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh Presbytery, 1794-1994. Providence House Publishers, Presbyterian Custom Publishing: PO Box 158, Franklin, Tennessee 37065; 1993. Synopsis: A collection of historical sketches and church records. Records include synopses from the session records and a census of the cemetery with date of death and age at death information. (ISBN 0-881576-15-9).

• Irene Taylor. Descendants of Henry Ewing, 7 Apr 2005. Synopsis: Annotated descendancy chart enclosed in a 7 Apr 2005 letter to Riddle.

Patterson, listing all the individuals who endorsed the call. It then lists 23 Revolutionary War Veterans buried in the Montour Church Cemetery. This list identifies three more veterans than shown in most lists of the cemetery's Revolutionary War Veterans.

• Birth Certificate, David Neal Ewing. Synopsis: This is the certificate prepared by Community Hospital at Boulder, Colorado, with footprints on the back and the whole deal.

• Ida Ewing. D.A.R. Application May 26, 1933. Synopsis: This was approved 20 Jul 1933, but other sources think John Ewing was born 1769/70, so was too young to have served in the Revolutionary War.

• Isaac and Margaret (Drake) Ewing. Family Bible. Present owner/location unknown. Synopsis: Copy of a family record page from the family bible giving data for Isaac Ewing, his wife Margaret Drake, her parents and their children. Somewhat hard to read, but useful in checking and supplementing information from other sources. Obtained from Leona Scott approx. Aug 1998.

• James Ewing (1733-1825) Will, filed 11 Mar 1826, Allegheny Co WB Vol. 3, pg. 125, No. 69. Synopsis: A synopsis appears in generated reports. A copy of the original document appears in the Conundrum Chronicles.

James of Inch Journal – Two Generations

Provides birth/marriage/death information for individuals annotated with ancillary information such as birth weight, marriage pastor, etc.

Additionally provides information about ‘life events’ such as land purchases, migrations, occupations, wills, will probates, estate inventories, guardianships, etc.

Source information is provided for all data. (Well, almost all!)

Research Notes identify inconsistencies in source data (and any resolutions made) as well as outstanding issues that need to be resolved. [This information is sometimes given in the narratives and in footnotes.]

A two-generation, journal-style report is appended to this presentation material.

The EGD posting provides all of the information included in journal-style reports for all generations descendant from

James of Inch (as well as collateral lines).


Research Issues – Examples

General Issues• Relationships among, and heritage of, the Ewings living in or near Inch, County Donegal, Ulster,

Ireland in the mid-1600s.

• Cultural and physical environment of the Inch area in the 1600s and 1700s.

• Migration to and settlement of the upper Chesapeake Bay area in the 1700s.

Family Group Issues• Reasons for and details of the migration of relatives, in groups and over time, from original

settlement areas to other areas.

• Birth orders for siblings when there are no concrete birth dates.

Issues for Individuals• Research Note for Alexander Ewing: Fife indicates (page 123) that William (c1707 - 1774) is a

child (number VII) of Alexander (c1694 - b1752). This is in conflict with Fife's discussions in Chapters XV, XXXIX and XXXXI in which she consistently talks about William and Alexander being brothers. It's assumed that the "son relationship" indicated on page 123 of Fife is a mistake .

Consistency Within and Between Published Information• Research Note for Alexander Ewing: Need to check the 1728/1729 emigration date for Alexander

(c1694 - b1752). It's inconsistent with some material in James G. Ewing's information, for example, John living in Chester Co ~1725.

• Research Note for Alexander Ewing: On page 325, Fife says Alexander's Administration Bond was dated 23 Jul 1752. However, she gives the date as 21 Jul 1752 on page 120.
