New Curriculum!

• We are currently operating two different courses at the moment.

• Year 11 are following the Legacy AQA triple science or Legacy

AQA Core and Additional Science.

• Year 10 are currently following the new AQA triple science or

AQA Combined Science Synergy.

• Due to the different nature of the courses the advice for locating

revision materials will be slightly different for each year group

however the general tips for revision apply to both courses.

Year 11 Science – how its assessed.

Year 10 Combined Science:

Year 10 Separate Sciences – how they

are assessed.

This will be the same for chemistry and physics also – a total of 6,

1hour 45minute examinations for year 10 triple science students.

Revision Materials

For both year groups BBC Bitesize is a great

resource.

Students can go onto Biology, Chemistry or

Physics, locate the topic they are wanting to

revise and use the revision notes, activities

and quick tests to check their understanding

of a topic.

Homework

Year 11

• Students can currently access revision cards and other revision

resources from show my homework.

• Mr Brasier has added revision cards for biology.

• Mr Mounfield is in the process of uploading them for chemistry as is

Miss Wareing for Physics.

• More revision materials will be added regularly – keep checking!!

• These will be on each students homework calendar if they log in

with their username and password.

Year 10

• Your teachers will provide you with materials on show

my homework as the course progresses.

• It is important to access these resources when they are

shared with you and it may be wise to save them to a

memory stick or hard drive so you can use them again

for your revision.

Revision Guides

Revision guides – Year 11

• Year 11 Students all have revision guides.

• Triple Science students have separate ones for Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

• Non triple science students have two revision guides – one for Core Science (Unit 1) and one for Additional Science (Unit 2)

• These are specific to the examinations that the students will sit.

Year 10

• The availability of revision guides and other published

revision and support materials specific to the new

curriculum are currently quite limited, however new

materials are being published regularly and we will be

writing to you soon regarding the purchase of specific

revision materials to support our students.

“My GCSE Science”

• This website gives video tutorials, exam style questions,

hints and tips and answer schemes.

• It is currently only active for year 11 however an updated

version for year 10 is planned.

• The Unit 1 videos are available free upon registration,

however there is a subscription charge for units 2 and 3

and the additional materials for Unit 1.

Practice Papers

• You have a lot of content to learn in science but the technique of answering the questions is also important.

• Practice papers are essential as part of your revision.

• For both year groups these can be accessed on the AQA website.

• Year 11 need to access the papers with codes staring with the number “4”

• Year 10 need to access the papers with codes starting with the number “8”

• There are also mark schemes available on the website so you can check your answers

How to Revise?

• These are some of the materials to support revision but

organisation and techniques are also important ….

Create a revision timetable

• Creating a revision timetable is a great way to organise

your study time, plus it also helps boost your motivation

to revise for your exams. Recognising a need for a

revision timetable means that you have already made a

great start to combat exam stress.

Practice, practice, practice..

• One of the biggest recommendations that past GCSE students suggest is to practice questions by doing as many GCSE past papers as you can.

• Practising past papers will help you get familiar with the:

• Exam format

• Question style

• Time pressure

• Retrieve information quicker

Take regular study breaks

• Do you feel stressed, tired and that no new information is entering your head? There is no point forcing yourself to study for hours upon hours as this will not result in a positive outcome.

• Taking regular study breaks and exercising is proven to engaging your brain in studying and improve your exam performance in the long-run. Exercise is a powerful enabler which boosts your brain’s ability to be productive so don’t underestimate how important it is to take the stairs rather than the lift!

Understand your learning style

• Everyone thinks that there is a best way to study but the

reality is that each person is different. Once you understand

your learning style by deciding if you are a visual, auditory,

reading/writing or kinaesthetic learner, then remembering

and recalling new information will become much easier.

• Practice will also tell you if you work better studying during

the night or in the morning/daytime.

Variety is the spice of life

• Mix up your study habits and methods by listening to podcasts, watching videos or documentaries, moving to new study area or even something as simple as using different colours for your study notes.

• This is different to the other GCSE revision tips mentioned here as it encourages you to try a few different things to see what fits for you. Your brain will recall where you were or how you revised for a topic which will help you remember more information. Give it a go!

Use mind maps

• If you find it difficult to remember tons of new study notes, Mind Maps may be the key to improving your memory. The theory behind mind mapping explains that making associations by connecting ideas helps you to memorise information easier and quicker. There are much more benefits to using Mind Maps for learning including being able to map out your curriculum, develop GCSE concepts in-depth and create sample exam answers.
