KEY POINTS FROM SEPTEMBER 2016
Controlled assessments have been removed. Both subjects are assessed through terminal examinations at the end of year 11.
Using spoken language will be assessed through one presentation to be completed at any point over the two years and reported as a separate grade.
Both exams are now single tier entry.
All examinations are closed book.
Pupils will sit one mock assessment each half term, based on one of the sections above

Outline of new curriculum changes:
The volume of content has increased
The demand of this content is a higher mathematical standard
The exam time has increased from 3.5 hours to 4.5 hours in total
There is a greater emphasis on problem solving and mathematical reasoning
Students are required to memorise more formulae
All of these changes are designed to help students emerge from GCSE Maths with a level of
confidence and fluency that will provide a genuine foundation for the rest of their learning and
working lives.
Revision opportunities
Each student will receive a past paper booklet which are to be stored in a folder and used
throughout the year, both in class and at home. Pupils need to pay £5 towards this cost.
Pupils will be provided with a password to Method Maths, which can be found at the
bottom of the school website homepage. This is an online, interactive revision tool made
up of past papers and provided the pupil with instant feedback. Pupils need to aim to
complete all the resources available throughout the academic year.

Year 11 Information Evening
Triple Science These courses are all part of the OCR 21st Century Science suite.
This is the second year of the triple science course in which the students
opted to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate GCSEs.
Students will be taught in one group and will have specialist Biology,
Chemistry and Physics teachers.
Each of the three courses follows an identical pattern and is made up of 7 modules.

Skills for Life Day
ASSEMBLIES
We invite a number of feeder colleges and apprenticeship providers into school to give a presentation to
Year 11's about their establishment. We appreciate that some students have already sampled some of the
colleges but did not get the opportunity to see them all. The students receive information such as
examination results, enrichment activities available, entry requirements and other information each
specific college wish to give to the students.
Year 11 students are given a comprehensive list of all College Open Days & Evenings as and when
we receive the information.
CAREERS, ADVICE AND GUIDANCE As you may be aware there is now no 'Connexions' in Wigan. Schools have been asked to 'buy' in the
Careers Advice, Education and Guidance Service Wigan Council is offering. We have bought into this
service and are employing an advisor to work in school with the students. All Year 11 students will be
given a half hour confidential guidance interview in school with Catherine Gibbons, who is a very
experienced careers advisor. This process has already begun in Year 10.
Your son/daughter will receive this interview before Christmas and before the deadline for applying for
colleges closes. They will be advised on college courses/ job opportunities/apprenticeships when they
leave school and further advice on their chosen career and the path they should take. Parents are quite
welcome to attend these interviews should they wish to do so. Catherine Gibbons is based in Pupil
Services.
All Year 11 students have the opportunity to attend the DW Stadium to take part in an Employability Skills
Day. This is delivered by a team of experts from a company called 'Bright Futures'. Students cover topics such
as CV Writing, Presentation Skills, Communication Skills, Problem Solving, Finance and Expectations in the
Workplace. There will also be a ‘Marketplace’ activity. Pupil’s will have the opportunity to see colleges,
employers, apprenticeship providers and universities to help with post16 options.
Students will be placed in groups and are encouraged to work together to complete several interactive
activities. We ask for a contribution of £10 towards the cost of the day. It is a small contribution that will help
to fund the hire of the stadium on that day, the cost of refreshments and the cost to hire 'Bright Futures'. It
will also go towards funding other work related opportunities offered in Year 11.
Pupils are expected to wear business attire. Further details about this day will be explained in a letter you
will receive shortly.
Mock Interview Conference
Tuesday 14th February 2017
As part of your son/daughter’s Work Related Learning Programme in our school they will be taking part in a Mock Interview Conference. The aim of the conference is to simulate a genuine job interview with a relevant employer to ensure that your child is thoroughly prepared for the ‘real’ experience! The pupils choose the career area they wish to be interviewed in. Interviews are held at the DW Stadium within a ‘real working life’ context. This has proved to be very successful with pupils, staff and employers rating it as a very valuable experience. The conference could not take place without the contributions from employers who give up a full or half day to enable our pupils to have this wonderful opportunity. An advanced thank you to them! Helping your child to succeed at GCSE
During the next few weeks your child will be given the following
information by their individual subject teachers:

PRIVATE STUDY
Research has shown that for success at GCSE, students should spend at least one
and a half hours each evening in private study, extending this to two hours each
weekend.
However, these figures only apply to the start of the course in Year 10. In Year 11
this must be extended to two hours per evening and four hours each weekend.
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO DEVELOP GOOD STUDY HABITS. THE OFTEN-USED EXCUSE OF 'NO HOMEWORK HAS BEEN SET', WHILST MAINLY UNTRUE, DOES NOT PREVENT GOING OVER THE WORK THAT HAS BEEN DONE PREVIOUSLY, PRACTISING, FURTHER EXAMPLES, SORTING OUT NOTES, LEARNING BY HEART ETC.
Working at home
In a perfect world each child would have their own bedroom, an ideal place for private study. In the real world, this is often not the case. However, irrespective of home conditions a place for private study has to be found if success is to be achieved. In the ideal situation each child should have in their bedroom: a) a desk or table big enough to spread their books and papers out, b) good lighting, directly over the desk, c) a container, on the desk for pens, pencils, erasers, paper clips etc,
d) a hole punch, a stapler, calculator and a glue stick etc. e) storage space, preferably a shelf to hold text books, files and exercise books, f) a notice-board to display important dates. If this cannot be achieved, then space could be made in the kitchen or a room away from the TV. Kitchen tables are as good as desks! However, you must ensure that they are given enough private time to study. Good strong cardboard boxes can be used as alternative storage spaces and brought to the study place each evening. These boxes must have safe storage space and not be accessible to younger brothers or sisters! We are all surrounded by noise daily. Research has shown that teenagers work well to background noise. But if it is too loud it can become distracting. Visual images, such as television, are continuously distracting and should be discouraged. Quite often, as teachers, we are told by parents that their child spends two hours each evening studying in their bedroom. You need to ensure that these hours are spent studying and not just two hours spent in their bedrooms.
Taking Breaks Sometimes, in order that a deadline may be met, several hours of
continuous private study has to be undertaken. It is important that you encourage your child to break-up this study with short breaks or changes in activity. Research has shown that fifteen year olds can only undertake about thirty minutes intensive study. After that period of time attention begins to slip and standards fall.
Encourage your child to have short breaks every thirty, or so, minutes. Sit down and have a cup of tea or coffee with them, encourage them to go for a short walk, kick a ball or listen to music.
EFFECTIVE LEARNING We are at our most effective, as learners, when: a) we are enjoying the learning process b) we have a high degree of self-esteem c) the physical environment in which we are working is both pleasant and supportive and we d) are continually encouraged through positive feedback. It is important that, as parents, we work hard in trying to ensure that our children become effective learners. We must encourage them to succeed by decreasing their concept of failure. Every success that our child achieves must be greeted with celebration. Periods of self-doubt have to be discouraged by constant encouragement to try again. Statements such as 'Well, Gail isn't very good at Maths but tries hard in French', gives Gail the excuse that she does not have to succeed in Maths as long as she succeeds in French. It is far better to say 'Gail is trying very hard in Maths, and I'm proud of her. You should see how her French is improving! Negative feedback is both discouraging and deadly! It eventually leads to a state of 'learning shutdown'!
Several periods of short planned study are far more effective and productive than a two hour unbroken spell.
