Topic 14- Science for exceptional children : physical disabilities
Physical disabilities
A student with a physical disabilities may have any
one of the following :- Orthopedic impairment
- Cerebral palsy- Spina bifida
- Muscular dystrophy- Arthritis
- Congenital anomalies- Osteogenesis imperfecta
- arthrogryposis
When choosing a technological aid to compensate for or bypass a
physical disability, the following factors should be considered:
- Age- developmental/cognitive status
- Physical abilities- Present needs
- Future needs of the student
Muscular dystrophy Cerebral palsy
Spina bifida
arthrogryposis
Topic 14- Science for exceptional children : physical disabilities
• Science is an excellent vehicle to enable children with disabilities to – develop confidence– Self esteem– Social skills through group work– Problem-solving skills– Cognitive abilities
Topic 14- Science for exceptional children : physical disabilities
• Strategies for adapting science instruction to children with special needs– Identify specific competencies children are to achieve– Ensure that children have achieved the skills and
understanding they need for success in the lesson– Modify reading levels to meet the capabilities of the
children– carefully prepare introductory and summary activities to
be explicit, specific, and delivered in small bites.– provide needed information in small pieces– Identify and define any vocabulary words that may come
up
Topic 14- Science for exceptional children : physical disabilities
- Develop alternative form of assessment- Assess frequently- Encourage children to demonstrate their competencies
through various means- Adapt furniture, storage areas, and other facilities so
they can be used by all children- Ensure that all children work on the activities- Modify equipment and materials to be sure all children
can use them- Enlarge aisles and areas of movement to accommodate
all children- Provide assistive and adaptive technology resources
• how can parents help their children study and prepare for science:– Conduct activities by using material that
compatible with the child physical disabilities

Topic 15- science for exceptional children : gifted and talented
Gifted and talented
Creative characteristics:
- Fluent thinkers, able to generate
possibilities, consequences, or
related ideas- Elaborate
thinkers, producing new steps, ideas, response @ other
embellishment to a basic idea,
situations or problem
Learning Characteristics:- Keen power of observation & a
sense of significant- Take a great
pleasure in intellectual activity
- Often display a questioning
attitude & seek information for its
own sake.-skeptical, critical
and evaluative
Topic 15- science for exceptional children : gifted and talented
• strategies for adapting science instruction to gifted and talented:– Recognize and nurture behaviors usually demonstrated
by gifted students– Allow students to demonstrate and get credit for
previous mastery of concepts– Provide opportunities for faster pacing of new material– Incorporate students’ passionate interests into their
independent studies– Facilitate sophisticated research investigations– Build the inquiry lessons on children’s interests– Allow deeper and more penetrating probes into
inquiries– Encourage cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary
aspects to the inquiries
Topic 15- science for exceptional children : gifted and talented
• strategies for adapting science instruction to gifted and talented:– Emphasize principles of sound logic and critical thinking
when children present and validate their conclusions.– Encourage a focus on contemporary, real world issues– Encourage the use of multiple resources, including print,
people, and electronic sources– encourage independent excursions into unknown and
unfamiliar areas of inquiry– Help children figure out hoe they can continue their
investigations and inquiries outside of class– Allow children to work independently or with others who
are focusing on similar areas of inquiry– Allow large blocks of time for children to work on their
inquiries
Topic 15- science for exceptional children : gifted and talented
• how can parents help their children study and prepare for science– Conduct activities that:• The activities should be at ability and developmentally
appropriate for the child• Activities should require materials that are available at
home• The activities should be fine.
– Demonstrate magnetism by having children compare the effects of magnets on different objects in the kitchen • Let the children predict which objects will and will not
be attracted to the magnets
• how can parents help their children study and prepare for science:– Use building blocks to develop the concepts of set
and order• Lay a foundation of the three blocks• Then place two blocks on the next layer and one on the
top layer• Ask the children to count the blocks and to estimate
how many blocks would be necessary to build towers six and ten blocks high
