Authors Luncheon

12:15PM – 1:45PM: Authors Lunch (Hollywood Ballroom); Seven Authors Speaking!

Michael Grant is the New York Times bestselling author of the Gone series. He has spent much of his life on the move. Raised in a mili-tary family, he attended ten schools in five states, as well as as three schools in France. Even as an adult he kept moving, and in fact be-came a writer in part because it was one of the few jobs that wouldn’t tie him down. He lives in Southern California.

Al Yankovic, with a career spanning three decades, is a fixture in popular culture. With hits like “Eat It,” “Another One Rides the Bus,” “Amish Paradise,” “Ebay,” and “White & Nerdy,” Weird Al, a three-time Grammy-winner, has sold more comedy albums than anyone else ever. “White & Nerdy,” a rap song (of course), has been viewed on the internet over 110 million times.

Ellen Hopkins is the New York Times bestselling author of Crank, Burned, Impulse, Glass, Identical, Tricks, and Fallout. Her novels are praised by teens and adults alike, and she has been called the “bestselling living poet in the U.S.” by mediabistro.com. She lives with her family in Carson City, Nevada.

Benjamin Hale is a recent graduate of the Iowa Writers Workshop. He received a University of Iowa Provost’s Fellowship to write The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore, which also went on to win a Michener-Copernicus Award. He has been a night shift baker, a trompe l’oeil painter, a cartoonist, an illustrator and a technical writer. He grew up in Colorado and now lives in New York.

Matthew Kirby was born in Utah, but with a father in the Navy, he lived all over--Rhode Island, Maryland, California, and Hawaii. As an undergraduate at Utah State University, he majored in history. He then went on to earn MS and EdS degrees in School Psychology. Matthew currently lives with his wife in Utah, where he works for a large school district. The Clockwork Three is his first book.

Ally Condie received a degree in English Teaching from Brigham Young University and spent a number of years teaching high school English in Utah and upstate New York. She lives with her husband and three sons outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. Ally loves reading, running, eating, and listening to her husband play guitar.

Andrew Smith is the author of Ghost Medicine, which was a 2008 Best Books for Young Adults nominee, and In the Path of Falling Objects. In addition to writing, Smith teaches high school advanced placement classes and coaches rugby.

2:00PM – 3:00PM: The New Age of Reading: a look at some of the most interesting developments in children’s literacy & digital content Publishing is in one of the most dynamic periods of its history, and some of our most basic assumptions, such as “What is a book?” and “What is reading?” are now up for debate. Join ABC Executive Director Kristen McLean for a tour of some of the most interesting experiments underway in the children’s books and literacy, from Figment, the new cellphone novel social network for teens, to A Story Before Bed digital e-picture book service, to Wonda-la Vision, Tony DiTerlizzi’s new 3-D enhancement of his latest picture book, to breakthrough ideas in education and 21st century literacies. This will be a one-stop primer for children’s booksellers and librarians who want a glimpse at some of the newest projects that are pushing the boundaries of children’s books, and a lively discussion over the important role children’s books will continue to have in the digital future. Presented by Kristen McLean, Executive Director of Association of Booksellers for Children

Graphic Novels, Not Just For Comicbook Stores: Booksellers & Authors Tell All! A panel of talent and booksellers discuss successes and highlights of the graphic novel category. Don’t miss out on this important, growing business in your store. Bring any and all questions! Who reads graphic novels? Should I have a section in my store? What are the trends in the graphic novel industry? How do I build graphic novel customers/section at my store? Panelists: Pat Walker (Vroman’s Bookstore), Darren Clavadetscher (Skylight Books), Authors TBA. Moderator: Wade Lucas (SCIBA Board, Random House).

Constant Contact: Best Practices Most of us use Constant Contact to stay in touch with our customers, but have you ever wondered what day of the week is best to send out you newsletter, event reminders or surveys? Join SCIBA for this valuable seminar presented by Constant Contact.

3:15PM – 4:15PM: Books–vs–Bullying: Fighting one of today’s most insidious problems with great books It’s all over the news—what used to be a playground problem has now gone under-ground in both in the real world and in cyberspace. How can we, as booksellers, teachers, librarians and parents help our children prepare for the new age of bullying, and how can books help us? Join Kristen McLean, the Executive Director of the Association of Booksellers for Children (ABC), along with Kathryn Otoshi, author of the critically acclaimed ONE, a bookseller or two and a developmental psychologist as we explore the issues involved in supporting and strengthening kids’ resistance to bullying of every kind.

Sales Reps Pick of the List: General Interest—Second Session Come see and hear what is new and coming in the world of books. Please check back for list of reps presenting in this session.
