draculas feast
TRANSCRIPT
A party game of deduction and memory for 4-8 players
Dracula’s throwing a midnight ball, but among the masked guests are deadly enemies! To win, be the first to unmask the other players, or fulfill your character’s ulterior motive. Each monster has their own specialties and a unique style of play, so mask your identity and pay attention to everyone’s behaviour...
SET-UP:Choose which role cards to include – one for each player. Shuffle them together and place the corresponding name tokens in the middle of the table - these serve as a handy list of who is in the game.
For your first game use the following:
For a 4-player game: Dracula, Van Helsing, Witch, Ghost.
Add one of these for each additional player: Loki, Shapeshifter, Cthulhu, Alucard.
On subsequent turns, you can use your action for any one of the following, now directed towards any player:
Guess – Ask any player if they are a specific role. They’ll privately answer – most of the time players have to be honest, but a few role cards allow them to lie when guessed.
Accuse – If you think you know someone’s role, you can publicly denounce them. Say “I accuse you of being (the role you suspect they are).” If your accusation is right, they leave the party. If you get it wrong, you have to leave the party!
DAnce – Ask any player to dance. If they accept, look at each other’s role cards. You now know exactly who they are, but once you’ve danced with someone, you can’t accuse them. (even if they change roles!) If the player doesn’t want to dance with you, end your turn!
unmAsk the pArty – When you think you have an idea of who everyone is you can try to name every character at once – even characters you’ve danced with. If you get any wrong you have to leave the party...but if you get them all right, you win! No player can attempt to unmask the party until their second turn.
When you make a player leave the party, turn their role card face-up. Once a player has left the game, they can no longer take actions or win the game! As soon as any player wins, the game is over.
Deal one role card randomly to each player. Don’t show your role card to anyone else! Each player takes a reference card. The player sitting left of the dealer goes first, and play continues to the left.
GAMEPLAY:Every turn each player gets one action. Actions either give you information about the other players or help you eliminate them.
On your first turn, you can use your action to: guess the player to your left, request a dance with the player to your left, or accuse any player.
1
TOKENS:Answering guesses is done through yes or no tokens – when you’re guessing someone’s identity you give them both a yes and a no, which they’ll return with their response on top (so no one else can see). You guess out loud, so while everyone knows which role you’re trying to guess, only you know how they answered.
So that there’s no confusion between accusing and guessing: when you’re accusing someone, take the name token of the role you’re accusing and place it face-up in front of them. If you’re right, they’ll reveal their card and leave the party. If you’re wrong, you have to leave the party! When accused, players cannot lie about their role card.
Whenever someone leaves the party, take their name token off the table (to make it clear that they’re not in the game any more). When you correctly accuse another player, keep their name token on your reference card to keep track of how many players you’ve eliminated.
When unmasking the party, start by revealing your identity and putting your role card in the middle of the table. Remove your name token from the game and place one of the remaining tokens in front of each player to show which player you’re guessing as which role. Don’t put them down until you’re sure - once the last name token is placed, your decision is locked in and final!
In response, each player must place a yes or no token face-down on your role card. Take their other token and put them face-down on your reference card. Shuffle the answer pile together, and dramatically reveal them one-by-one...if any read no, you leave the party and play continues. If they all read yes, you win the game!
ROLE CARDS:Each role card has slightly different rules, and some even have special victory conditions. You have to obey the rules of your role card – if you realize later on that you made a mistake, it can turn the whole game upside-down, so while you’re learning the game, check your role card frequently. The roles are as follows:
DrAculA: The host of the party. When he’s made to leave, he reveals his identity as normal...but on his next turn, he gets one final attempt at unmasking the party. While Dracula’s identity is revealed, he can’t be accused or accept dance requests. If he fails at his bonus attempt at unmasking the party, he leaves – but if he correctly names everyone, he wins!
VAn helsinG: Van Helsing can win by unmasking the party like everyone else and saving the townspeople, but he’s also hunting Dracula. He instantly wins after dancing with Dracula or correctly accusing him! If Dracula leaves the party by any other method, Van Helsing can no longer win by finding him, and should focus on trying to unmask everyone else.
Each time you start a new game, you can pick different roles to be included, but Dracula and Van Helsing are in every game. If you’re playing Dracula and you don’t know where Van Helsing is, dancing can be very risky...
Witch: This wicked witch wants to watch people get kicked out of the party – she wins after correctly accusing two roles (keep track of this by holding onto name tokens). She must accept dance requests, so if you think the Witch knows who you are, dance with her so she won’t be able to accuse you!
Ghost: This ghost is friendly – she’s not going to eat anyone, so the townspeople don’t consider her to be a threat. No one can be accused as the Ghost, and she must accept all dance requests. You still have to name her when unmasking the party, but until then she’s just here to enjoy the boos.
2
loki: The Norse God of mischief is out to cause some trouble. He wins after trying to unmask the party and getting it completely wrong. He also wins if he gets every character correct, so Loki is looking for responses of either all no tokens or all yes tokens. Since you take name tokens out as players are eliminated or reveal themselves, Loki can’t name people as roles who aren’t at the party, and he can’t name anyone else as himself.
shApeshifter: The Shapeshifter answers to many names – no matter who you guess her as, the answer will always be yes! Fortunately, she must accept all dance requests, so it’s easy to see who’s really behind the mask – if you don’t mind letting her see who you are as well! Like all characters, the Shapeshifter must answer honestly when accused or when someone is unmasking the party.
cthulhu: The Great One is so large that the other monsters immediately spot exactly who’s under the mask. Cthulhu is played face-up but is so scary that no one can accuse them. If Cthulhu is the player to your left, on your first turn you may skip them and guess (or ask to dance with) the character to Cthulhu’s left.
Using Elder God powers, Cthulhu gets multiple guesses each action– two the first time they guess as their action, three the second time, four the third time, until they have as many guesses as there are other players! Each guess has to be used on a different player, one after another.
After guessing a player, Cthulhu sees their answer before making the next guess.
On Cthulhu’s first turn, if they choose to guess, they guess one player to their left and one to their right. Cthulhu can ask other characters to dance instead of guessing or unmasking the party, and can accept dance requests when asked (but doesn’t have to).
Dr Jekyll: Dr Jekyll is in attendance, but if he is made to leave the party, he transforms into another monster! The good doctor is too shy to guess anyone else, so on his turns he can only ask to dance, accuse another player, or attempt to unmask the party.
When you’re playing with Dr Jekyll, set-up is slightly different: choose an extra role card to add to the game (e.g. 6 role cards for a 5-player game) – include that card’s name token as well. After the other role cards have been dealt out, place the spare role card face-down in the middle of the table.
If Dr Jekyll is made to leave the party for any reason (if he’s correctly accused, if he incorrectly accuses someone else, or if he tries to unmask the party but fails) reveal his card and remove his name token as normal. Dr Jekyll’s player then takes the spare role card and plays under that role’s rules. If his new card is Van Helsing, he’s looking to dance with Dracula. If his new card is the Witch, he wants to correctly accuse two players. (which can include players he accused as Dr Jekyll!)
As long as the spare role card is in the middle of the table, whenever a player unmasks the party, one of the name tokens will go to that card, but it doesn’t return an answer. If the cards are dealt out so that Dr Jekyll is the spare role card, that’s fine – he just never attends the party.
AlucArD: Alucard has always dreamed of being as cool as Dracula, and he wins if someone accuses him of being Dracula, or gives him Dracula’s name token during an unmasking! To make it harder, he answers yes when guessed as Dracula...but this kid is so desperate for acceptance, he must accept dance requests, so it’s not hard to see who you’re really dealing with.
3
SUGGESTED SETS:The game is designed so that you can use any mix of cards (as long as Dracula and Van Helsing are included) but each card has either one, two or three dots on it. Cards with one dot are best for beginner players, cards with two dots are for intermediate players, and cards with three dots are a tiny bit more complicated, for when you want to mix things up a bit! As well as that, here are some general suggestions:
• Dr Jekyll makes games a bit more complex – he’s great for games of 4 or 5 players!• Alucard can be a bit tricky! If possible, avoid using him until everyone has got the hang of the game.• Cthulhu works best in larger games - avoid including when playing with less than 6 players!
If you find a set you really like, write it down and use it again! After each game, try letting the winner switch out a role, or selecting a whole new bunch at random!
FAQ:I asked someone if they were Dracula - they thought I was accusing them and answered out loud!If you always make sure to pass a set of yes and no tokens when you’re guessing, and a name token when you’re accusing, then any confusion is their fault! If you’re not sure if someone is accusing or guessing, and they haven’t handed you anything, ask them before answering.
I’m Loki, and during an unmasking, I got everyone wrong...but I named Alucard as Dracula! Who wins?Alucard wins the moment the decision is locked in and he’s named as Dracula! Sorry Loki...better luck next time!
Why would you ever accuse someone on the first turn?Maybe you’re Dracula, Van Helsing has guessed you, and you want to make sure he leaves the party before he gets a chance to accuse you and win! Maybe you’re the Witch, and you’ve got a good idea of who someone is. Or maybe you’re Dr Jekyll, and you’re happy to take the chance of being wrong, since you know you’ll be coming back as another role. Or maybe you just like living life on the edge. There’s lots of possible reasons!
Can Cthulhu ask multiple players if they’re the same role (e.g. ask three players in a row if they’re the Shapeshifter)?Yes!
Can Cthulhu ask a player if they’re two different roles? Not in the same turn! Each of Cthulhu’s guesses have to be directed to a different player.
Why doesn’t Cthulhu have a name token?Because Cthulhu doesn’t need to be named during an unmask attempt, and you always know when Cthulhu is at the party.
Any tips?Floss your teeth daily. At first it feels weird, putting your hands inside your mouth so often, but you soon get used to it. Tips for the game? When you’re putting the name tokens on the table, put all the characters who say yes to dance requests on the same side, and keep an eye out for characters who refuse dances – that often narrows it down quite a lot.
My question isn’t here!Email it to me: [email protected] Even if you don’t have a question, feel free to drop me a line – it’s always lovely to hear from people who have played the game. Send feedback, your favourite combinations, or ideas you’d like to see me use for future cards!
