Batch design with CADS design modules

Introduction

This document describes the procedure to export and design reinforced concrete elements like beams, columns, padbases and pilecaps in batches from SCIA Engineer to CADS RC Design Modules.

Initial requirements for batch processing

1. Create a structural model in SCIA Engineer with ‘Concrete’ as material and ‘BS’ or ‘India’ as National code.

2. Define Ultimate and Serviceability load combinations. All the RC designers require ULS load combinations and RCPBD additionally requires SLS load combinations for design.

3. Define ‘Result classes’ with both ULS and SLS selected (required only for designing RC Padbase)

4. Run the analysis. 5. Now you are ready to export the various RC components to the corresponding CADS RC Design

applications using batch processing.

RC Beam Designer (RCBD) batch processing Double click ‘Concrete’ available in the Main tree. Select ‘Beam designer’ under ‘CADS BS design module’.

From the model select all or specific beams that need to be designed / exported.

In the ‘Properties’ palette set the selection to ‘Current’, set the type of loads to ‘Combinations’ and select the required ULS combination.

Click the ‘>>>’ Export button available under ‘Actions’.

The following dialog will appear:-

Select template or create new: A default template file will be displayed. By clicking the ‘…’ button (browse button) an existing template can be selected or using the ‘New’ button a new template can be created. If the selected template is not found in the specified path (which might got deleted or moved to a different path), a warning message will be displayed and the default template will be used. Note that when there is a conflict between the template data and SCIA engineer data (eg concrete grade), the SCIA engineer data will be used.

When the ‘New’ button is clicked an instance of RCBD will open. After making necessary changes in the design parameters, save the blank job using the `save’ or `save as’ command to the desired path.

Enter file name for saving the status report: A random unique file name will be given by the application to save the status report in RTF file format. Define a new file name if required. This file will be saved in the selected path for saving the batch jobs.

Select path for saving RCBD batch jobs: A default path will be given by the application to store the batch jobs. Select an alternative path if required using the browse button available.

Press OK to continue the batch process.

The batch process will run in the background and the following dialog will be displayed after

completing the batch process.

Clicking ‘View status report’ button will open the design summary report in RTF format in MS Word. The design summary report will have details like beam reference, span, size, concrete grade, bar details, status, warnings and error messages for each selected beam.

Clicking ‘Browse jobs’ will open the folder already specified in the initial batch process dialog where the RCBD batch jobs are stored.

Clicking ‘Browse jobs’ will also close the above dialog automatically. Note that unless the ‘Batch Process’ dialog is closed the saved jobs can’t be opened in CADS RC Beam Designer.

Close button will close the batch process and go back to SCIA Engineer. Note that unless the above batch process dialog is closed you can’t go back to SCIA Engineer.

Note that the export is one way. No results will be displayed or used within SCIA Engineer.

When the same set of beams are redesigned using the batch process a message will be displayed to warn that the existing jobs will be overwritten with a new set of jobs. Clicking ‘Yes’ will result in overwriting the existing jobs. Clicking ‘No’ will display the first batch process dialog to allow you to specify a different path for saving the batch jobs. After changing the path and clicking OK the batch process will be completed and the status report and batch jobs will be saved in the newly specified path.

RC Column Designer (RCCD) batch processing Double click ‘Concrete’ available in the Main tree. Select ‘Column designer’ under ‘CADS BS design module’.

From the model select all or specific columns that need to be designed / exported.

In the ‘Properties’ palette set the selection to ‘Current’, set the type of loads to ‘Combinations’ and select the required ULS combination.

Click the ‘>>>’ Export button available under ‘Actions’.

When the ‘New’ button is clicked an instance of RCCD will open. After making necessary changes in the design parameters, save the blank job using the `save’ or `save as’ command to the desired path.

Enter file name for saving the status report: A random file name will be given by the application to save the status report in RTF file format. Define a new file name if required. This file will be saved in the selected folder for saving the batch jobs.

Select path for saving RCCD batch jobs: A default path will be given by the application to store the batch jobs. Select the an alternative path if required using the browse button available.

completing the batch process.

Clicking ‘View status report’ button will open the design summary report in RTF format in MS Word. The design summary report will have details like column reference, size, concrete grade, bar details, status, warnings and error messages for each selected column.

Clicking ‘Browse jobs’ will open the folder already specified in the initial batch process dialog where the RCCD batch jobs are stored.
