Reproductive CloningReproductive CloningReproductive cloning: (aka adult DNA cloning)Purpose is to produce a genetic duplicate of an existing or dead organism.

*Not all body cells can be used to make a clone

(some cells are specialized)*

Steps involved:1. Remove nucleus from an egg cell2. A mammary gland cell is removed from an adult

female3. Electricity fuses mammary and egg cell4. Fused cell begins dividing5. Dividing embryo is inserted into surrogate mother

Therapeutic CloningTherapeutic CloningTherapeutic cloning: used to correct health problems

• Very important to therapeutic cloning are stem cells (cells that can become different types of cells)

• Controversial because the best stem cells are from embryos which are destroyed when harvesting cells

• Stem cells can be used to replace cells damaged from injuries or disease

• Diabetes, spinal injuries, Parkinson’s disease are only a few that can benefit from stem cell therapy

Once you decide on your position, move to the designated location.

The ‘Agree’ group will talk together and come up with a joint statement about why they agree with the statement.

The ‘Disagree’ group will do the same thing.

The ‘Neutral’ group will think of 1 question they want to ask the ‘Agree’ and ‘Disagree’ group to help them choose a side.

The ‘Agree’ group and ‘Disagree’ group will make a final statement. The people in the ‘Neutral’ group must then choose a side.
