NewsletterProviding Extensive Educational Opportunities to Rural & Remote Australian Students for 25 years

Each of our pastoral care Houses are named after people who have contributed significantly to the College and/or the Central Australian region. One such person was the Rev. KF ‘Skipper’ Partridge who tended to the physical, spiritual and intellec-tual needs of the people.

This week’s assembly honoured him and the members of Partridge House. As a Patrol Padre, ‘Skipper’ Partridge and those ministers who went before him, together with those who followed in his footsteps, developed relationships with the people of the outback. Through building good re-lationships they were able to bring about change and improvements in the lives of many.

We can also improve our lives by nurturing, build-ing and improving our relationships with one an-other. I mentioned to the College community this week that being considerate of others, respecting each other’s differences and using good manners, not only shows respect for someone else but respect for ourselves.

Caring for our health is also imperative, and I would like to stress the importance of students wearing their hats even in the cooler weather. Many of our staff have had carcinomas removed due to exposure to the sun when younger, and we hope that by instilling in our students the habit of wearing a hat we significantly reduce any future health problems on them.

Girls’ Boarding NewsBowling & Standley Chasm

Last week we welcomed three new ex-change students for the term. Michelle and Laura are from Canada and have gone into Year 10. Lauren, from South Africa, is in Year 11. We hope they will have a wonderful exchange with us. The long weekend started with a scavenger hunt in the dark on Friday night. With 30 clues, scattered around school there was a tempting first prize of movie tickets for the winning team, plus an extra financial bonus if the winning team managed to get all 30 answers correct. Two teams came very close but the winners managed the whole thirty. Well done to Shania and Margo and their team mates Colin and Phil. Great job. On Saturday night it was ten pin bowling with the boys. There were some great scores with Sunette scoring 137, Colin 135 and Savannah achieving the third highest score with 131. Bowling is always a good night out and lots of fun. On Sunday morning, a group of girls went with me to our community garden plot. We were delighted to see that the radish seeds we’d planted on Tuesday after school were already up. We tied up the tomatoes and planted some lettuce seeds. It’s all looking good! On Sunday night it was volleyball in the stadium with the boys and then on Monday the girls headed off to Standley Chasm for a picnic. It was surprising how few of the girls had been there before because it’s an awesome place.

We all walked into the Chasm at midday just in time for the sun to penetrate the Chasm floor. On the way back 13 of the girls and I

opted to take the steep path up the side for a stunning view of the surrounding area. Once back at the car park, we settled on to the grass for a lovely picnic of chicken drum-sticks, salad and ham and cheese rolls, juice boxes and fruit. It was a lovely trip and the girls, as usual on trips, were impeccably behaved, eliciting positive comments from tourists we met at the Chasm. The next two weekends promise to be exciting - as we are building our prosthetic hands on Sunday morning and the following weekend we will be helping the Salvation Army with their Red Shield Appeal.

Boys’ Boarding NewsScavenger Hunt & Volleyball

It was a busy first weekend back for the boys in the boarding house, due to the public holiday on the Monday.

Friday evening, the boys enjoyed what proved to be a very tough scavenger hunt with a whole lot of new questions from pre-vious hunts. Philip Sullivan’s team took out the title in a time of 1 hour and 7 minutes

Above: Mischai enjoying the view on camp

and had every question correct, winning the bonus prize as well. Philip said his orienteer-ing skills he learnt in Outdoor Education were crucial in leading his team to victory.

On Saturday evening, we went ten pin bowl-ing at the Dustbowl. Colin Puruntatameri was the king of pins, with a high score of 135. Ethan Bowman came in at the other end with a grand total of 34. William Stojic showed great potential as a future profes-sional bowler on the American tour, with his technique of spin and accuracy! It was a fun night enjoyed by all.

On Sunday evening all the boarders had a game of volleyball in the sports stadium where Corby Borrett’s team took on Josh Spry-Pilkington’s side. It was a close contest that came down to the fifth and final set, with Josh’s side coming out victorious 3 sets to 2.

William Stojic, Max Morgan and Mishai Elvey were named the top three players of the game. Ugo Frediani also performed well for his first game of volleyball.

Just a reminder that the Exeat weekend is on the weekend of May 23rd to the 25th this term.

Colin Puruntatameri Speaks With Warren Snowdon in Preparation for National Indigenous Youth Parliament

Last week, Year 11 student Colin Puruntatmeri met with Member for Lingiari, Warren Snowdon, in preparation for his trip to Canberra as part of the National Indigenous Youth Parliament. The National Indigenous Youth Parliament (NIYP) is an exciting program run by the Aus-tralian Electoral Commission (AEC) in collaboration with the YMCA and the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House.

Colin had the opportunity to ask Warren Snowdon any questions he might have about Parliament, together with what to expect, before he heads off Canberra for a week at the end of May/beginning of June.

The NIYP is an opportunity for 50 young Indigenous Australians to learn about Australia’s democracy and to have a say in Australia’s future. It is a week-long leadership program for young Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people aged 16 to 25 who are interested in learning about Australia’s democracy.

NIYP will bring to Canberra future Indigenous leaders from around Australia to talk about issues affecting their communities. The partici-pants will learn how laws are made and have the opportunity to speak to and learn from the lawmakers.

Year 10 Wearable ArtDo You Have These Items?

The Year 10 Wearable Art students are beginning to create their outfits. Some of the students are requesting some obscure items to go with their themes. We are asking if anyone has any of the following lying around the house and would like to donate them to the Wearable Art students. The students are trying to source some old car speakers, a piano keyboard that they can use the keys from, a corset, and plastic plants. The items can be brought to school and given to Miss Killer or alternatively email me [email protected] if you can help.

The students and I thank you in advance,

Round Square Action Sleepover

Attention Year 7’s and 8’s!

The Senior Round Square Committee will be running a Round Square Action Sleepover on Friday, 23rd May (Week 4) for Year 7 and 8 students. The sleepover will involve a variety of fun activities based on the 6 pillars of Round Square (International Understanding, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership and Service.) We ask that students are dropped off at 4.30pm on the Friday for a 5pm start of the program, and collected at 9am the following morning.

Permission slips with more information are available at Student Access. Places are limited so make sure the permission slip is returned to Student Access ASAP to secure your place. Come along for a night packed with fun activities! See you all there!

Share Your Career JourneyI’m looking for parents, friends and Old Saints of St Philip’s to come in and share their career journey with our Year 10 PLP classes. If you don’t mind speaking to a class of students about the subjects you took in high school, the other training you received (on the job, TAFE, University degree) and any twists and turns that your career has taken – please come and share.

We have six lessons a week at all different times so offer a lot of flexibility in dates and times. We hope to start this in Week 6 (Monday 2 June) and continue through to Week 7 (Friday 13 June). I envision about 10 - 15 minutes of sharing and then a few minutes of answer-ing questions.

If you are willing to share your journey please contact me by email, [email protected] or phone 8950 4553 as soon as possible so we can schedule you in.

Year 8 Camps in ReviewWild weather continued for the Year 8’s as the final flooded-out group took to the West Macs for their own adventure. Setting off in good conditions with the chance of a little rain they were destined not to miss out on precipitation. Tuesday afternoon saw a light drizzle, but it all opened out in the late and early hours of the night while the group was camped on the other side of Ellery Creek Bighole.

The first heavy downpour hit hard and all students managed to survive the pounding as the rain soaked into the ground. A second and heavier rainfall at 2:30am had nowhere to run but over the ground and an ankle deep wave rolled through one of the bivvy sites, saturating all sleeping gear before carrying some sleeping mats out of the bivvy and towards Ellery Creek.

Excitement subdued and the girls found themselves sharing some sleeping bags and losing some sleep, but remained largely dry from their exploits. they returned to school on time with a large amount of soaked clothing and equipment.

The five Year 8 camps have been a great success with many students and staff experiencing what the outback has to offer; howling dingoes, fine food, mosquitos, clear and starry nights, rock climbing, canoeing, sightings of pirates, night walks, ochre pits, swimming and total satu-ration in the middle of the night.

As a man was passing a group of elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away.

“Well,” the trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are condi-tioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”

The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.

Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?

Moral: Failure is a part of learning. We should never give up the struggle in life. You fail not because you are destined to fail, but because there are lessons which you need to learn as you move on with your life.
