Dear Parents, The 2011-2012 school year is up and running. It has indeed been a busy time for all of us here at Aberdeen Elementary, but the students are settling in nicely and there is a lot of great learning underway. Our current enrollment is 166. We have many new students and families joining us this year - 54 new students, including our new Kindergarten students. Thank you to all of the parents who have stopped into the office to say hello and introduce themselves. In our opening letter we inadvertently posted the incorrect staff list and grade groupings. Please see the corrected list in this newsletter. There are some very recent changes in staffing to announce. Mrs. Petersen has accepted a Kindergarten position at Harry Sayers Elementary starting next week. Aberdeen will be sad to see her go and she will be missed by all students, families and staff members. We wish her well in her new position. Ms. Alana Earles will be replacing Mrs. Petersen until the posting process can be completed. Secondly we would like to formally welcome Mrs. Brenda Mallory as our Gr. 6/7, Div. 1 teacher. Mrs. Mallory has been here since the beginning of September and we are pleased to announce that she is now a permanent staff member. Thank you to families for sending in their email addresses so you could receive this notice by electronic means. We are all doing our bit to save trees and energy, not to mention that you get to see all the great graphics and pictures. Regards, Alison Moore Principal

RAINY DAYS
Fall is settling in and the days are getting cooler. The trees are beautiful now, but it won't be long before the rains set in. We know how
important it is for students to get
out in the fresh air, run off some
steam and meet with friends. Please
note we will be practicing West
Coast Recess. This means that
students will be expected to go
outside for drizzly or sprinkles of
rain. Please ensure students have
appropriate outside clothes.
Free Grade 5
Get Active Pass Abbotsford students in Grade 5 are being encouraged to get active.
Once again, these students can register for their free Get Active Pass at either Abbotsford Recreation Centre (ARC) or Matsqui Recreation Centre (MRC).
“We are extremely pleased to be once again offering this great program for our young people,” said Mayor George Peary. “Physical exercise is vital for the health and prosperity of our children, and it is
important that we continue to find ways to encourage them to become physically active.”
The Grade 5 Get Active Pass provides students with free admission for all drop-in skating and swimming programs from now until Aug. 31, 2012.
Last year, 855 students took advantage of the pass, which worked out to more than 6,300 visits to the recreation centres.
Grade 5 students – or anyone born in the year 2001 –
can come to either ARC or MRC with their parent or
guardian,
proof of birth (i.e. birth certificate, passport),
and proof of residency in Abbotsford (a
parent’s phone bill or driver’s license) to apply
for the pass.
Any Abbotsford student that is in grade five
but was not born in 2001 can bring a letter of
support from their school or principal if they
are wishing to participate in the program.
The Grade 5 Get Active Pass is a program that was
developed in partnership between the City of
Abbotsford, Healthy Abbotsford and the Abbotsford
School District.
If you would like your
child to have a warm
lunch. Please use a
Thermos.
It is a great way to keep lunch warm
and quickly accessible at lunch time.
* If you must warm up
your lunch, remember
nothing over 1 (one)
minute and there is no heat
up on non-milk days
