SCHOOL TRIP MONTEVERDE, COSTA RICA BIODIVERSITY & SUSTAINABILITY TAKE YOUR CLASS ON A WEEK-LONG FIELD TRIP TO COSTA RICA, AN IDEAL SETTING TO LEARN ABOUT BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION. Costa Rica is the only country to meet all five criteria established to measure environmental sustainability. It’s no wonder, as the country is home to a rich variety of plants and animals. With about 0.1% of the world’s landmass, it contains 5% of the world’s biodiversity. Some 25% of the country’s land area is in protected national parks and areas, the largest percentage of protected areas in the world. A mountainous town more than 4,500 feet above sea level, your home base of Monteverde is famous for its biodiverse cloud forests and verdant coffee plantations. Against this backdrop of spectacular beauty, you’ll study how humans interact with these ecosystems to compromise their biodiversity, and you’ll be exposed to efforts to reverse biodiversity loss and live more sustainably. Throughout the program, we’ll stress the interaction of science, culture, and society. In the end, your students will come home knowing the origin and importance of biodiversity, its conservation, and how humans can live more sustainably to support it.
